What is SPD?
SPD stands for Sensory Processing Disorder.
Sensory Processing Disorder is the name given to the disorder that causes some people to react to Stimuli differently. SPD can be found in children and adults and can not be treated with medication. The treatment most Occupational Therapists recommend is a Sensory diet and tolerance. According to SPD Star, “Sensory processing (originally called “Sensory integration dysfunction” or SID) refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioural responses. Whether you are biting into a sandwich, riding a bicycle, or reading a book, your successful completion of the activity requires accurate processing of sensation.” This basically means, people with SPD experience the world in different ways than Neurotypicals (people with “normal” functioning senses). When a Stimulus activity occurs someone with SPD may experience it differently than everyone else without SPD. For example, the sun to most people is a fairly bright object in the sky but to someone with SPD, the sun is a bright fire burning at their skin and causing their eyes to sting and water. SPD can make everyday things difficult to deal with but there are many resources online.

For help locally and in person, ask your family physician to send a referral to an Occupational Therapist who specializes in Sensory Integration.

The Eight Senses
Everybody has eight main senses but not everyone experiences them the same way. For someone with SPD, our eight senses can interfere greatly with our lives.
The eight senses are as follows:
1.            Visual – what you see
2.            Auditory – what you hear
3.            Olfactory – what you smell
4.            Gustatory – what you taste
5.            Tactile – what you feel
6.            Vestibular – sensation of where you are in space, this also includes balance
7.            Proprioceptive – sensations from our joints and muscles
8.            Interoception – sensations of internal movement and feeling, such as, hunger, heart rate or breathing.
Someone can be over responsive, under responsive, or even seeking one or more of these senses.
These senses can cause confusion or even anxiety due to the false message the body will send to the brain.
Here are some personal examples of how I react to certain senses.
-              Visual – I seek slow and calm movement and avoid rapid colour changing gifs
-              Auditory – I enjoy many forms of music but have a hard time focusing on one thing when there is a small repetitive noise or crying baby in the background
-              Olfactory – I love candles, I could spend hours testing candles but the smell of food cooking makes me very nauseous
-              Gustatory – I like certain foods and hate others but this sense isn’t a major one for me (other’s examples are only liking bland food, hating spices and sour tastes.)
-              Tactile – I LOVE SOFT, FLUFFY AND WARM THINGS. I absolutely hate warty pumpkins, just looking at them causes my hands to feel as though I am touching it and I have breakdowns/Sensory Overload/anxiety attacks just by seeing it. The texture just grosses me out
-              Vestibular – I love swinging on a swing or rocking back and forth but hate when my head or body is upside down
-              Proprioceptive – I enjoy tight hugs, weighted blankets and resistant bands and am fairly clumsy but this is not a major problem sense for me
-              Interoception – I constantly have the sensation that I have to pee… It’s awful…
Feel free to add your examples below

A Wisconsin mall Santa decided to handle one of the naughty list members early this year when a young girl told him her Christmas wish was for her stepdad to stop molesting her. He and four of his elves attacked the guy, who was waiting nearby, and pummeled him unconscious.
An eyewitness recalled, “Santa didn’t say nothing. He just grabbed the back of the guy’s skull and headbutted him REAL hard.” The witness continued on to say, “Then Kringle got on top of him and just started pummeling him. He was laughing and screaming ‘Ho! Ho! Ho! Motherfucker!’
