Had a casual chat with Arjun Chandra Barman, Owner of Mahamaya Restaurant, Panbazar, Guwahati -one of the first Assamese Businesses to be established in the Pre-Independence Period! 

    “Mahamaya Restaurant was founded by his father, Shri Naro Ram Barman, with Arjun Chandra Barman taking over the family business from his father in 1964. Established in 1918, the restaurant has witnessed everything from the struggle for Independence to the Assam Movement. Best known for its “adda” sessions, personalities of the likes of Bhupen Hazarika and Lakshyadhar Choudhury frequented here a lot. The restaurant became a hotspot for discussions during the Asom Andolan (The Assam Movement) in the 1980s, recalls Arjun Ch. Barman. The restaurant, sitting strongly on the corner of Panbazar Chariali has withstood the tides of time and has witnessed the many changing faces of the Assamese Society. Within its walls, the restaurant still retains a bygone-era charm.”
