I don't understand, why is that man named the Marquis de Lafayette when he looks nothing like Gilbert? Was he named in honor of him? I see the other characters have historically-minded names as well. Its a game, right? Is the game placing the characters in an alternate setting?
I hope you don’t mind some minor spoilers for the game, and that I’m answering this publically. I think it might be useful for the main tag as an explanation of sorts.
The Order: 1886 is an alternate history of the world set during a Tesla-punk (literally, Tesla in a basement) Victorian-era England, with added supernatural elements (hello, lycans and vampires). The Marquis de Lafayette that shows up in the game is confirmed to be the same historical figure since they specifically refer to him as the Hero of Two Worlds in his bio on the  website, and they make reference to his past involvement in the American Civil War. But given that it’s an alternate history, things changed a little in between major plot points.
Such as him being alive in 1886. Also, why he doesn’t look like Gilbert. Furthermore, why they still refer to him as Marquis when the French Revolution dissolved the titling of nobility.
Can I explain why that is? Laziness, maybe. Or fantasy shenanigans, creative license, etc. In any case, the Marquis de Lafayette tag is now hopping thanks to The Order: 1886 though perhaps not necessarily a good thing for those looking for historical content. As for the other historically-named characters, theories abound for those but I’m not overly familiar with those to explain.

She’s been at it for hours. Or if not, it certainly feels as if he’s been staring at the Inquisitor trying to scale an insurmountable cliff face for hours.
He thought, the near-eternal rain of the Storm Coast soaking in through layers of tightly-woven wool and leather, to ask that she simply take the stairs on the other side. But none of her other companions had so much as mentioned it, merely waving her on as she attempted to climb the near-vertical rock formation. Perhaps watching Mio perform repetitive tasks for hours upon end was a rite of passage as a travelling companion, but with the water running down his neck, the Marquis is more inclined towards an umbrella instead of valuable bonding experiences.
With one hand folded under his chin while the other pushes damp hair from falling back into his face, he watches as the pebbles slide and she slips inelegantly back down again. A gold coin for her efforts, and a copper for actual progress.
“ It’s impossible. ” She finally says, arms folded over her chest and with a look on her fair features that could wither the remaining plant life from the rock face. “Can’t be done. How am I supposed to get up there to check for rock shards? ”
It says something, he thinks, that he doesn’t even question the logic behind that, merely rising from his unfortunately-damp seat to stand behind her with a hand upon her shoulder. “ What can be done is that I am going to requisition an umbrella with my name on it, for the next time you decide to take a shortcut through the Storm Coast. I refuse to believe that there is not a single working device among the entire Inquisition’s supplies. ”
It takes but a moment for him to press his lips against the shell of her ear, grinning with impish delight upon enacting a price of waterlogged patience and her squeal, and another for him to spin her in the right direction. Over yonder, his gloved finger points, rain marring the leather, and the Marquis murmurs soft enough that the waves nearly drown him.
“ And mademoiselle? Perhaps next time, you could try the stairs first. ”

There is a half-breed—a corpse now, really—at their feet, limbs twisted and frozen in the last throes of life before a violent and bloody end, and what feels like the better part of its entrails upon his uniform, but Lafayette can hardly believe that he is alive.
Well, ce n’est pas tout à fait vrai.
As the Knight-in-Training catches his breath with his heart still hammering loud in his chest, he has very few doubts that Lady Igraine would have managed just fine without his presence. But even the formidable woman has not managed to escape without harm, a razor-thin scratch raw upon her cheek, and as the rush of battle fades from his blood, weariness collides headlong into him. He is loathe to imagine what he must look like, and whether or not all of the blood that soaks red stains into the wool of his coat is his own.
But he is alive, they have managed to fell what tried to murder them, and that scrape on her flushed cheek is beginning to well with blood. There are important matters to attend to, such as Pervecal’s call for their attention over their respective communicators, but ever the gentleman and ever impulsive, he leans down to swipe a gloved finger over the cut. Satisfied, and with a roguish wink, he brushes his lips over it for good measure.
Kisses make things better, do they not? Or at least, so goes the saying.
“ Just a scratch, mademoiselle. Nothing to worry about. ”
