Times passed in a blur, he was yanked away from the room and finally he was able to breathe some fresh air, it was almost starting December and the cold wind woke him up from his trance. He couldn't believe it, he couldn't believe it, he couldn't believe it.

He met his friend's gaze and they both took a deep breath. "Nice to see you back, princess." Barty grinned.

"Care to tell us what you find in the old lag mind to be so shocking? Not a lot of things are able to shock you so much"

"There are seven of them out there." At their skeptical look he went on. "He made seven Horcruxes." And right now the awareness took place in their face.

"Seven-" Evan whispered.

"-horcruxes?" Barty said, then closed his eyes and start cursing every fucking name that came into his mind, and the were a lot. Where the fuck one could find seven horcruxes? How one could even create seven of them.

They got one and they had been very lucky that Lucius was not as smart as he thought. Maybe two if they found the one that Bellatrix had.

But the other five? Holy crap, things were about to go down.

“Regulus” James put his hands up where Reg could see them to stop his rumbling. He was trembling. Regulus just confessed to him and- and his heart was floating, his mind was racing, the only thought in his mind was to keep him close, because if Regulus had walked away from him, they would never meet again.

Regulus was fucking good at hiding and even with their map was almost impossibile to find him.

“I’ll admit getting close to you was all a plan at first, I mean- Sirius was miserable and- and I needed to do something. But I didn’t stick around just because I thought I could make you two as you were as kids. I'm not here to use you for my- my nonsensical plans. I won’t be like them, I won't be like your parent who uses you for their needs. And I won’t let you let me be like them. Because I like you like this. I like you- as you are, so shut the fuck up.”

"No. You are wrong. You like your idea of me with your standards-"

"Regulus- I could list everything I like about you here and right now. I like staying with you in every free moment that I have, I like your silence, I like your passions, I like seeing you riled up because the fucking main character of your book is stupid, I like when you insult me, I like when you scrunch your nose in distaste, I like when we go meet the house elf, I like when you smile. Fuck- I love when you smile, and I want you to do it more often but then everyone would like you because I don't know if you are aware of how fucking beautiful are you when you smile. I like your freckles, your hands, your eyes. Don't let me start ranting about your eyes because they are the most unique thing I could ever see in my life and I'm a fucking wizard so I see a lot of unique thing in my life. Should I go on? Because I can tell you how I like when you-"

Eyes bigger than a doe’s, Regulus stared James down, making him shiver.

“He’s not my brother,” Sirius shook his head after a moment. And shook it again like he was ridding himself of a buzzing fly. Again. James wanted to look closer at Sirius' anxieties, hold his eye open and shine a light through his skull. Is that how all those lab doctors felt? But Sirius didn't let them through his shell. Only sometime, but he still had too much inside him, bottled up.

They heard a clang and he turned to see Regulus' wand fell on the ground, his lips wobbling a bit, but he quickly stood up, getting away as soon as possible. Sirius seemed to see but not to understand how much he hurt him. Sirius was dissociating again. In places that James didn't ever see and where he couldn't go, where he couldn't take him out.

“He is,” James said simply, almost angrily. They were brothers, they- they had- since the first time, Sirius came with Regulus. They were each other's strength, they were each other's hope, they came together, Sirius the overprotective brother and Regulus the cold one, who cared inside. And- Sirius took proud in being his older brother, during their first year it was his most prominent feature. “What else is he then?”

“I left him,” Sirius says hoarsely and he finally understood what his best friend meant before. Sirius grips the wrist of his bad hand, watching the spot Regulus had been one moment before. “I left him behind.”

Sirius didn't meant bad when he said that Regulus wasn't his brother anymore. He just meant that he had failed him, that he didn't deserve to be called like that anymore, that he let him down.

But to Regulus- Yeah- to Regulus those words meant something else.

A darkness had fallen over the house the moment the streetlights had gone out.

The air on the glass had condensed to become almost ice.

Something was wrong. Something was wrong. Something was wrong.

He watched the two most important person in his life. Lily had to be safe. Harry had to be safe.

"Lily, whatever happens now, you stay with Harry." And Lily nodded, taking the child in her arms. She probably wanted to argue, he could see it in her eyes, but she was intelligent enough to understood that now was not the right moment.

Maybe never.

Because tonight it was the night he would die.

But it was okay- everyone knew how James was. Everyone would come before him. And his son would make no exception. He would have protected his golden boy. His heart. And his mother.

He was a martyr. And it was okay. For Lily and Harry.

"It's him, he's here," he said after a short while, he didn't know how he knew, he just did. He got up to face him; the man was already in the middle of the driveway, already near the door. He had never seen him but he knew.

Padfood was the right choice. Peter betrayed us. It should have been Padfoot.

It was the only thing he could think of when he was going to face his death. Padfoot was innocent. Peter was not.

He looked into Lily's eyes for the last time. The we’re running out of time, Voldemort was opening the door and Harry had to be safe. His child. His son. His everything.

“Lily take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off!” Padfoot was the right choice. He knew it. Even if Sirius was predictable he was not a traitor. He was the best man in the world, even though he came from the worst of the families.

“I’m sorry” he whispered when he found out he hadn’t his wand with him. “I’m sorry” he whispered when he saw the door open, or better, blow up. “I’m sorry, it should have been Padfoot. You would be safe right now. Not scared to death.” James was not ready to lose his son, to lose Lily. He was not ready but he was harmless in front of the most powerful man in the wizarding world.

“James!” He heard Lily scream, her footsteps who were going upstairs, with Harry in her arms, trying to find a safer place.

“I’m sorry Lils, Harry I love you”

The 31st of October the child - Harry Potter - had to die. The prophecy was clear and Voldemort could not make any mistakes.

But all went shit when a fucking -cat? appeared at the door, saving the family and almost killing Voldemort, that now is left to reassemble his pieces. But Regulus Black had other problems.

Or Regulus Black saved Harry Potter, but with saving him they form a special bond, a thin red line that went across one fighter to the other. He feels physical and mental pain not having him near. He feels the need to protect him from everything.

But with an estranged brother that hated Regulus and a hyper protective family around him it was difficult to make that happen. But it was better this way. He would not live long enough anyway.

(This is the journey in which Regulus will eventually became Harry's father and try to defeat Voldemort, finding all the Horcruxes)

Pandora was the one who opened the door ti him, and her guilty expression made him turn on his mind. It was screaming alert, alert, alert "Hi James, sorry for this" she said, with a little evil smile on her face. He didn't understand what she was apologising for until he entered their home and he saw all of Reg's friend on the couch, scrutinising him with serious expressions.

Did Barty put on some fake glasses? Fuck they were- weird.

"Uhm" he chuckled- why did he have to do this first? Fuck his best friends, Sirius should be here taking their angry gaze, not him. "Hi everyone, are you good?"

"Flattery is no good" Barty shook his head- and he had a fucking notebook on his hands? What the hell?

"I'd give a -2" Dorcas replied writing on her notebook too.

"He didn't sound enough convinced" Evan said, he personally didn't have a notebook but he watched the one Barty was using, who nodded enthusiastically. "-5" he added and- what?

"What? -7 in like- two minutes? It's not fair guys!"

"This is a you problem, considering you are at -100" And then- he laughed. He laughed because they were- Were they real? What the actual fuck? A notebook where they signed his- value? Worthiness? It would have been fucking hilarious if he hadn't been the one being scrutinised.

"He's laughing at us" Dorcas whispered and Barty nodded again, writing something else, maybe a -99.

"Okay, then, where is Regulus? I came here to talk to him" He continued, he felt under observation- and probably he was - it was strange and a little bit psychotic, but- they were Regulus friends who took care of him, so they were good - he hoped -.

Evan laughed as if he was the dumbest person on his planet. "You didn't really think you could bypass us like this"

When James fucks up with Reggie so he has to pass the test of his friends to actually go to him. They are so funny without really trying.

Sirius's lips were dry and hoarse when he opened them. “I’ve ruined everything with Regulus ,” he whispered in a hoarse voice that sounded nothing like his. “It’s all my fault.” He said again, like Remus didn't say anything.

“What?” James said entering the room. He sat on the edge of the bed and placed his palm on his forehead. He looked for the first time at his face, his eyes hollow, his hair everywhere. James watched Remus and Sirius knew that it was him who called him there. "What are you saying, Sirius?"

“It’s my fault.” Sirius fisted a hand in James' shirt. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know. James I swear, kill me, punch me, anything. I need- I need it- make me bleed this time. I deserve this- I deserve the pain-"

Like Regulus did. Punish me, like my family did when I was little and I did something bad. I know only this- I know only hate- I could make all better if you just-.

"You were his boyfriend, you love him so much, you must understand the pain I caused him, James. You must hate me right now. I do it too. So I- I need-" he took James' shirt again, stronger. He needed a reaction from him. James must understand him, must hate him, the love of his life was punished for his decision. "Move! Do it!" He screamed, tears running down his face. Please, please, please- punch me- break my nose- make me bleed.

He-was to blame. He left him there.

He is such a father to him, they had decided to adopt him and make him know what is love and being loved.

Regulus said almost cheekily, but it was his way of showing away his insecurities. He could make some cocky remark but it was his way to preserve himself. To not show his vulnerabilities. He bit his lips not really meeting his eyes.

"Oh I'm just stargazing Reg, don't you worry"

"You absolute idiot, lunatic git, did you became dumb? You can't stargaze in a fucking room. And I- Oh. Oh” his eyes went wide, bringing a hand to cover his mouth. He almost laughed at that expression.

"Well I can, because I'm admiring a beautiful star now" he whispered getting near Regulus and his eyes widened some more. Those beautiful eyes.

“Mmh okay. I can see- so what would you like to do James? Do I have to listen to that? Have you a record?"

“Nope, I would like to sing it for you. Now."

His heart stopped. Enough. He died.

Not to obey, but to dare. He tried to think about the future but he was so lonely.

He was so afraid. He felt so dead.

Was this death? Or something more?

Would he have been happy?

Would he forget all that?

Another tear rolled down his cheek, it was the first time he had cried in months. Was his humanity returning?

Or was it just here, temporary? Was he disappearing?

His parents were destroying him, they were taking away his humanity, his emotions were gone and all that was left of him were bones, in an infinite solitude.

Into something bigger that swallowed him up more and more.

Into something he couldn't get over

Who would he be when his brother arrived?
