something i can’t stop thinking about is the way will and cyrus say the phrase “master/mistress mine, my will is thine…” we see will say it to lizard first, and he behaves sort of like a wind-up toy. it’s super clear that the words aren’t his - big smile on his face and a sort of vacant look in his eyes. but when he says it to ana, it almost seems natural and genuine. obviously its not - at least not consciously - but on a deeper, soul level, it is. and it shows.

same thing, different execution, with cyrus. we see him say it to farzeen (the guy from the 1.02 opening scene) first. he’s been a genie for a lot longer than will, and his tone reflects it - he sounds weary, resigned, subdued. but when he says it to alice, same as with ana/will - he sounds like he genuinely means it

okay I was talking with a blog awhile back about how 1989 is basically entirely about scarlet queen and I can't recall if it was you or someone else but I wanted to share this thought with someone

anyways the lyric "i changed into goddesses, villains, and fools; changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules, all to outrun my desertion of you, and you just watched it. if you want to break my cold, cold heart, just say ‘i loved you the way that you were.'" from chloe or sam or sophia or marcus (ttpd anthology) is one of the most anastasia x will lyrics I've ever heard

ooooooh yeah that lyric is so scarlet queen coded. i always thought it was interesting will (heartless will, at least) differentiated between 'anastasia' and 'the queen' - it was just one line but it showed that he separated them into two people in his mind because he needed to hate one, but didn't want to ruin all the good memories he had with ana. hence, 'i loved you the way that you were', which is what ana's afraid of hearing, and what will might as well have said/was definitely thinking up until the end of 1x11 when he both gets his heart back and starts to see the real her and not the person he's turned her into in his mind for all those years. 'goddesses, villains, and fools' as descriptors for ana - especially self-descriptors - is so perfect. and those 'rules' being the laws of magic... yes

i'm putting this under a read-more line because it's long and you definitely didn't ask for it, but your ask made me want to re-listen to ttpd with my scarlet queen glasses on, so here's my thoughts on some of the other songs:

fortnight 'i love you, it's ruining my life' 'when you love someone enough to ruin your entire life for, it's always worth it'. that's all. 'i took the miracle move-on drug — the effects were temporary' will and his unhealthy coping mechanisms: getting his heart ripped out, his drinking habits, etc. 'my husband is cheating. i wanna kill him' well who can say how the red king died really. but he was cheating and ana was probably at her most unstable temperament since she was just beginning to learn/experience dark magic

down bad 'in a field in my same old town that somehow seems so hollow now' thinking about will going back to the enchanted forest sometime after alice gives him his heart back in flashbacks. he's back 'home' but without anastasia (well... and without a heart in his chest lol) everything feels empty. 'how dare you think it's romantic leaving me safe and stranded' i'm thinking of the prison scene in 1x04, she has this whole escape plan to get him out of wonderland and he refuses to go like 'actually why don't you just kill me instead', also when the jabberwocky finds them in the woods, ana tells him to get back in his bottle and he's like 'also no??' it's like her instinct to get him away from the danger which tends to mean away from her 'fuck you if i can't have us, cause fuck it i was in love' i mean this was 100% will's attitude through most of the show

so long london ok this song may not fit their canon plot but i do have it in a 'what if they broke up again sometime after ouatiw' playlist so i still associate this song with them a lot. of course i prefer to think they got a happy ending/grew old together but if they ever broke up again, i think it would have this type of vibes

but daddy i love him definitely fits with ana's mom, high society, etc. disapproving of her relationship with will ('vipers dressed in empath's clothing' ok cora reference??) but the song also gives me vibes of will and alice's cliffside argument in 1x12 'i know it doesn't make any sense - i'm not saying it does, but i love her'

fresh out the slammer idk what they were doing with will in s4 but this song kinda gives me 'post s4 he's finally going back to wonderland' vibes

loml this song is soooo will after anastasia's death. he just got her back, lost her again, and now that he finally has his heart back he actually has to sit with his emotions instead of avoiding them. 'i wish i could un-recall how we almost had it all'
