1.11 Damon brings Elena to Bree’s Bar, despite the fact that she's not old enough. Bree pours them all shots; Elena seems unsure about hers and so Damon sneakily drinks it for her, which makes Elena smile.  Bree asks Elena how she got roped in to Damon's heart-breaking ways; she says she’s not roped, but doesn’t get through explaining that she’s dating Stefan. Bree tells Damon that there's no way to get in the tomb to save Katherine, and then he eavesdrops on Elena telling Stefan over the phone she doesn't see why she should believe him.  Damon speeds to her side and asks, “You okay?” She snaps, “Don’t pretend to care. I know you’re gloating inside.”But a minute later they’re inside together, eating french fries at the bar and discussing her heritage and his digestion. Elena is enjoying his charm and his humor, and then asks, “This nice act…is any of it real?” He just looks at her, and doesn’t answer. Bree hands him another beer, Elena pipes up, “I’ll have one too. Time-out, remember? For five minutes. And this five minutes is gonna need a beer.” They do some shots with bar denizens. “Do you need a bib?” Elena teases Damon. “Sorry I can’t unhinge my jaw like a snake to consume alcohol,” he answers. Elena suggests another round, a woman tells her she should be on the ground. "I'm not even drunk, my tolerance is like waaay up here!" She jumps up and down, Damon stares at her, smiling with equal parts bemusement and affection.

1.07 Stefan staked Vicki, and then took Jeremy away. Elena is bleeding from Vicki's attack, sitting next to her body, crying. Damon appears behind her, she looks up at him and accuses, “You did this. This is your fault.” “You confuse me for someone with remorse,” says Damon, flatly. She pushes him, and when he doesn’t react, goes to slap him; he catches her hand midair. “None of this matters to me, none of it,” he says. “People die around you.  How could it not matter?  It matters and you know it,” Elena says, and this time when she goes to slap him, it connects. He growls slightly.  “You need to leave.  Your wounds are bleeding, and you need to leave.”

I don’t know how long you’ve been around, anon, but I used to do this thing “Damon Song of the Day”? so I have a few recommendations!!

first and foremost! “Tear in My Heart” by twentyone pilots. this one has the bridge about driving while someone sleeps next to you, but it’s also sort of perfectly poised between “you’re fixing everything wrong with me” and “you are everything wrong with me”, and during 1.11 Damon is still poised between Katherine and Elena—still looking for Katherine, but brought Elena with him.

“Wild Heart” by bleachers, especially because of the line “everything has changed, and now I can’t tell what matters”!!

“Corner of Your Heart” by Ingrid Michaelson because “I will leave this man just to occupy one minute of your day” is in parallel to Damon asking Elena to take a five minute time out from her life to be with him.

“eight” by Sleeping at Last, which is about being hurt and not wanting to let anyone in but finally having the courage to let yourself be seen in your vulnerability—Damon isn’t totally there yet in 1.11 but he’s starting on the journey!

A/N: Here’s some rare Book 1 OxE! A lot of the time I forget they (Odette) did not like the another as people until mid-way through Banerji’s case, definitely after 1.11 is when they start to encroach on work friends territory. Sooo here’s some 1.9 angst.

The linen closet is dim; one of the two fluorescent bulbs out of juice. It’s a good thing too. Odette certainly doesn’t want anyone to know she’s here; crying in an unused closet of the newly renovated fifth floor wing not too far from where Dr. Banerji’s being hidden away.

Her head thrown back against the empty metal shelving, hot tears rolling down her cheeks like an unforgiving rockfall. Her arms folded so tightly around her chest. It feels like everything’s caving in. The crushing sense of failure crippling her and wringing her lungs until no sound comes out; just he hot tears of a minute of weakness.   

She’ll allow this inconvenience ten minutes. A quick ten minutes to herself in the most secluded of places. Yes. Ten minutes to get it all out and then pretend like nothing’s happened. 

Odette Hall lets go. Lets the picture perfect painted façade fall like a curtain on a play. Alone, in the dark, without any spotlight or watchful scrutinizing eyes, she lets the most private part of herself free, momentarily. Water runs down her cheeks as unforgiving as an overflowing river. There’s a prick at her sides, from her pristine fingernails digging into the fabric of her cotton scrubs. If she gripped any harder she’d tear a neat little hold. 

Everything she’s feeling tightened together like the frayed segments of a rubberband ball on the verge of snapping. Her frustration for this PITA patient she can’t seem to shake; can’t seem to get the diagnosis nor assert herself and her abilities. Another person who just sees her as a young and pretty face. Most of all she’s crying for the newest diagnosis she’s had to give. Odette knew the job wasn’t going to be easy - worthwhile things never are - it’s just... She needs some time to stop feeling so much. 

The wing is so new she doesn’t hear the door opening. Yet she hears him, unmistakably, in the quiet hum in ventilation of this wing.  

“Rookie?”

Doesn’t matter that the condescending nickname is said with more concerned wrapped confusion than she’d ever think capable of such a pompous and stoic man. Him being here - now of all times - is a burn. A brandish on his already weak perception of her, she’s sure. 

She turns her shoulder to him, wipes her eyes with the pads of her fingertips as to not muss her makeup any further. Dabbing so the red of her skin doesn’t give her away. Odette can feel the lingering heat; the drying trail of utter disappointment staining her features. 

“I’m alright, Dr. Ramsey,” she says; confident and like she’s above it all. Like he’s just walked in on nothing out of the ordinary; like she’s just looking over a case file. Cool, calm and frighteningly casual in the shadows. Even if the reds overtaking the whites of her eyes and other telltale signs will give her away as soon as she turns around.  

“Clearly.” 

His scoff is muted by something she’s only ever seen a glimmer of before in the depths of his icy stare. Pity, maybe? Either way it forces her stomach down to the darkened depths of wherever this outburst spurred from. She doesn’t need his endless sky-lit eyes imploring her. Doesn’t need for him to find another reason to berate her today. 

Out the corner of her eye she sees Dr. Ramsey shut the door; near enough so no one could peek in, ajar enough not to rouse suspicions of infidelity. 

“What happened?” he asks. 

“It’s nothing. I’m fine, really.” Odette turns to him and shoots the brightest, most composed grin. Hopes that in this poor lighting he cannot truly see through the cracks. 

Odette should know better than to muster false flattery with a lie detector. 

She’s shuffling in her heels trying to find a gap to slip through and out of this unpleasant predicament, whilst his arms are crossed. He won’t budge to let her past; statuesque and imperious in the doorway. 

Resigned and huffy, she folds her arms, matching his stance as best she can.  It’s a face-off in this 4-by-4 box. In such close quarters Dr. Ramsey’s cologne mingles with her perfume. Foreign and laudatory; sandalwood and soap, a hint of citrus too. 

“If you must know, I had to deliver a difficult diagnosis.”  

He still doesn’t move.  

There’s a bite in her exasperated retort; “I’d like to get back to work now.” A tap of her toe hones her impatient point. 

“What happened?” he says once more. 

“I just told you-” 

“The diagnosis, Hall.” His face softens once he catches the rigid way her spine strengthens at his uncompromising tone. “What was it?” 

A gust of stale air passes her dry lips, her eyes cast down and refuse to meet his. The new wing’s linoleum tiling has blue and green speckles mixed with gray. 

In addition to the hum of the central air, all Odette can hear is the beating of her heart prick up to her ears with the bubbling emotion once more. But her ten allotted minutes are over and now she has an audience. 

After a deep sobering breath she all but whispers,

“Preeclampsia.” 

Neither doctor tries to hide the pained expression that contorts their features and washes over them. 

A moment of silence reigns; whether intentional or not, both look in opposite directions to mourn the memory. 

Dr. Ramsey is the first one to speak; his voice gruff after clearing his throat. 

“And?” 

“Being monitored.” Odette’s eyes flick to his face. “She’s okay. For the time being. I’m planning to check on her after lunch.” 

Dr. Ramsey gazes down at his watch and Odette wonders if he has her schedule memorized by now. He assigns her patients, tells her where and when in the day to visit Naveen, seemingly finds her at one of the lowest points in her medical career with no effort at all. Does he know she should be on her break - is on her own time. 

He finally steps aside, further into the dark space; 

“Grab some food, Dr. Hall.” 

She musters a tight smile in gratitude as she slides past him and into the grateful bustle of day. She’s nearly fully illuminated by the bright white light when solemn - personable, even - words reach her ears. 

“And, Rookie,”

She turns to him, green eyes trained on the shelving beyond his shoulder. 

“If you need anything, please come find me.” 

Odette nods, once and short, before walking away; determined not to show another emotion to half the reason for her grief.

merlin in 1.11 (part 5/?): get it mended! (aka pan’s gif-illustrated reminder that 1.11 takes place days after 1.10, cont.)

Okay.  This is, perhaps, as good an opportunity as any to talk about Arthur.

There are plenty of other times in this show where Arthur throws stuff at Merlin, or insults him, or otherwise harasses him, and I don’t get worked up about those times, because it’s clear that Merlin is in on the joke.  He doesn’t mind it.  It’s just part of how they play with each other.  Merlin is happy to let Arthur be Arthur, and Arthur is happy to let Merlin to give as good as he gets, and their back and forth is a mutually agreed-upon, surprisingly affectionate language that might look like “mistreatment” to outsiders but is really a consensual game they play with each other.

The issue in 1.11 is that Merlin doesn’t want to play anymore.  But Arthur doesn’t notice or care, which means that their interactions are no longer harmless fun, and Merlin is actually being hurt by things that at any other time might not have been quite so serious.

The gifs above are one example.  Merlin’s had things thrown at him plenty of times before, and he normally ducks, dodges, laughs, and gets in a parting shot of his own before darting away.  But this is different.  There is not a single speck of enjoyment on Merlin’s face here.  Arthur walks away without a second thought about what he’s done, but Merlin stares after him with a death glare.

Merlin is angry about this.  He’s angry about a lot of the things Arthur says and does in this episode, starting with the slaughter of the unicorn and moving on down a list of small insults and belittlements.  Arthur is acting the same as always, like nothing is the matter and nothing is ever his fault, while Merlin has spent the last few days feeling like he’s dying inside.  Merlin does not want to play right now, and Arthur should know that - Arthur was there in Ealdor; he was intimately involved in what happened; he should know that Merlin is upset and won’t appreciate having dirty shoes thrown at his face - but instead Arthur decides to act like even more of a dick than usual.  And the question we have to ask ourselves is - why???  Why is Arthur being such an ass?  He should know better.  It was days ago.

For all that I complain about Arthur’s behavior here, I do think there’s a lot to be said for why he acts this way.  No excuses for the things he does, obviously, but still, I think it’s important to recognize that @once-and-future-gay​ is right on the money when she says #and maybe arthur IS wrestling with it.  I don’t think Arthur approaches Merlin in this episode intending to be an ass, the same way I don’t think he intends to be an ass at Will’s funeral.  I think the way Arthur ends up acting is a reaction to him being confronted with something that seriously shook him up, and now he’s scrambling to get as far away from that discomfort as he can.  

Arthur has never wanted anybody to die for him.  He would have felt incredibly guilty about that even if it were one of his knights, who are sworn to his service and required to fight for his cause.  But Will didn’t owe Arthur anything.  He wasn’t one of Arthur’s subjects.  He didn’t owe Arthur loyalty, respect, or protection.  He didn’t even like Arthur!  And he still died saving Arthur’s life.  That alone would be enough to make Arthur feel conflicted, but the additional revelation of Will having been a “sorcerer” threatens to tip Arthur over into a full-on philosophical crisis.  The idea that a sorcerer used magic to save a besieged village and then sacrificed himself to save Arthur’s life challenges Arthur’s entire worldview.  It makes him deeply uncomfortable.  Arthur can’t reconcile that chain of events with what he’s always believed to be true, which is that sorcery is innately evil and those who wield it can never be trusted.

The problem, then, is that instead of looking these events square on and acknowledging that his worldview might be wrong, Arthur chooses to reject what he’s seen and double down on what’s familiar.  He retreats further into the only framework that can alleviate his guilty feelings, which is that sorcery = bad.  If sorcery weren’t actually evil, then Arthur would have to acknowledge his complicity in an unjust system.  He would have to recognize that no, actually, Will didn’t actually do anything wrong, and his death is a terrible tragedy.  But if sorcery is innately dangerous and evil, then what happened isn’t quite so terrible.  Arthur doesn’t have to feel quite so implicated.  It’s a shame that this young man died, but that’s what happens when you play with fire.  No matter how “good” you try to be, messing around with magic will catch up to you in the end.  Will and Merlin should have known better.

Turning away from the truth is the only way Arthur can assuage his uncomfortable feelings about what happened.  He has to put the entire incident out of his mind.  He has to look away.  Arthur tries to forget what happened in Ealdor the instant they all leave that village, and he never allows himself to think about it again.  It’s never discussed.  The topic is forbidden territory.  It’s like it never happened.  Allowing it to be mentioned just risks Arthur having another crisis of conscience.  

And the person who suffers the most from this is, of course, Merlin.  But it explains why Arthur comes across as so oblivious/hard-hearted/insensitive in this episode.  He can’t allow himself to acknowledge that Merlin is in pain, because that would mean he’d have to acknowledge what just happened, and he’s already done his level best to purge recent events from his memory.  He doesn’t want anyone to remind him.  He ends up overcompensating by acting even more obnoxious than usual towards Merlin, both because Merlin is trying to force Arthur to trust a sorcerer and accept responsibility for wrongdoing (precisely what Arthur was already trying to avoid re: Will’s death) and because Arthur just doesn’t want to see Merlin’s grief.  He doesn’t want to give it an opportunity to manifest itself.  He doesn’t want to be reminded that it’s real.  It would make the situation too complicated.  It would make Arthur second-guess his convictions.

That is why Arthur says what he says at Will’s funeral, so cold and unfeeling.  “You know how dangerous sorcery is.  You should not have kept this from me.”  That is why he says what he says in this episode, too, only days later.  “You cannot trust a single word a sorcerer says.  You’d do well to remember that.”  Allowing himself to deviate from this uncompromising belief risks dismantling the familiar, safe viewpoint Arthur has trusted all his life.  It makes him complicit in wrongdoing.  It makes him uncomfortable.  

So he looks away.  He’s just not ready to confront this kind of challenge to his worldview yet.

DAMON/ELENA BRACKET ROUND 1.7FFF

1.11 Damon brings Elena to Bree’s Bar, despite the fact that she's not old enough. Bree pours them all shots; Elena seems unsure about hers and so Damon sneakily drinks it for her, which makes Elena smile.  Bree asks Elena how she got roped in to Damon's heart-breaking ways; she says she’s not roped, but doesn’t get through explaining that she’s dating Stefan. Bree tells Damon that there's no way to get in the tomb to save Katherine, and then he eavesdrops on Elena telling Stefan over the phone she doesn't see why she should believe him.  Damon speeds to her side and asks, “You okay?” She snaps, “Don’t pretend to care. I know you’re gloating inside.”But a minute later they’re inside together, eating french fries at the bar and discussing her heritage and his digestion. Elena is enjoying his charm and his humor, and then asks, “This nice act…is any of it real?” He just looks at her, and doesn’t answer. Bree hands him another beer, Elena pipes up, “I’ll have one too. Time-out, remember? For five minutes. And this five minutes is gonna need a beer.” They do some shots with bar denizens. “Do you need a bib?” Elena teases Damon. “Sorry I can’t unhinge my jaw like a snake to consume alcohol,” he answers. Elena suggests another round, a woman tells her she should be on the ground. "I'm not even drunk, my tolerance is like waaay up here!" She jumps up and down, Damon stares at her, smiling with equal parts bemusement and affection.

1.07 Stefan staked Vicki, and then took Jeremy away. Elena is bleeding from Vicki's attack, sitting next to her body, crying. Damon appears behind her, she looks up at him and accuses, “You did this. This is your fault.” “You confuse me for someone with remorse,” says Damon, flatly. She pushes him, and when he doesn’t react, goes to slap him; he catches her hand midair. “None of this matters to me, none of it,” he says. “People die around you.  How could it not matter?  It matters and you know it,” Elena says, and this time when she goes to slap him, it connects. He growls slightly.  “You need to leave.  Your wounds are bleeding, and you need to leave.”

MONTHLY MEDIA: December 2020

And so concludes another year! Maybe not the most ideal 12 months on record, but certainly memorable. I dunno. Anyway here’s how I wrapped up the year.

……….FILM……….

Gremlins (1984) Every time I watch this I just marvel at the fact that it was made. The practical effects are fantastic, the characters are so over-the-top that I think the Gremlin-sized mallet is the most believable part of the whole film. It just has that energy of a live-action cartoon and for that, I love it.

Gremlins (1990) This and Aliens fall under the category of sequels I didn’t like at first (for the hard turn in tone) but have come to really appreciate and enjoy. The opening with Bugs and Daffy really sets the tone for the whole thing and in hindsight, I appreciate how it manages to do all the same stuff that was loved about the original while making it feel bigger and different. Not necessarily better or worst, but definitely different.

Happiest Season (2020) It really felt like Harper was written to be the villain, right? Anyway it was a solid Christmas movie for a modern era, Kristen Stewart was a solid lead, and Dan Levy’s comedic timing is unreal. All-around fun watch.

The Family Stone (2005) Claire Danes and Luke Wilson are the only redeemable characters in this movie and while I don’t think they’d work out as a couple, it’s a shame they never get a chance to chat and just say “hey all of our family members are awful, right?!?” Actually Thad and Patrick are decent people, but I suppose they’re overshadowed by everyone else. Oof what a movie.

……….TELEVISION……….

Ted Lasso (Episode 1.01 to 1.10) Never have I more sincerely connected with a character’s outlook than Ted Lasso. It doesn’t matter if you know anything about Premier League soccer, what you get is an optimistic, heartfelt comedy that doesn’t punch up, punch down, or really punch at all. It’s gentle and kind and the sort of tv we need more of right now.

The Queen’s Gambit (Episode 1.01 to 1.07) Dang I thought I knew a little bit about chess but like...none of that helps here. It felt like a Rocky miniseries only chess instead of boxing (and I mean this all as a compliment). Given that the show doesn’t expect a knowledge of the grame, credit to the actors for communicating what’s happening in a game just through facial expressions. Worth checking out.

The Bachelorette (Episode 16.08 to 6.13) You know what, this was a pretty good season! It’s a shame we didn’t get any follow up after the proposal, but it was refreshing to see a group of guys who all got along and were just generally mature!

Mad Men (Episode 7.12 to 1.14) And so ends a pandemic-long viewing of Mad Men. First time watching it and I knew a little of how the series ended and honestly, I think it was fine! We got to check in with most of the cast and while I wish we could’ve kept going with these characters, it really did feel like they were all headed off in different directions anyway. Great series would highly recommend.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (1.07 to 1.11) It wasn’t until Asuka showed up that I realized this show is a metaphor for puberty and thus, is super horny all the time. Viewing through that lense, it’s an interesting allegory and the robot fights are cool.

The Mandalorian (Episode 2.01 to 2.08) For me, this show works best when it’s doing its own thing and just kinda existing in the world. The frog lady stuff, the random tasks, even the first ep did a good job of walking the line between fan service and the confidence to tell a new story. But dang if that last ep didn’t throw it all out the window. I’m just not a big enough Star Wars fan that I need to see all the old stuff again. It’s lazy writing and that’s what bums me out the most.

Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark (Complete) Really great! I don’t read much modern(ish) day fantasy but the ideas and worldbuilding in this are so economic that it felt immediately familiar. Plus who doesn’t love the idea of a sword-wielding heroine cutting down monstrous klansmen?

Illuminatus Part III: Leviathan by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson (Complete) After reading all three parts I can say, with confidence, that I have no idea who 90% of the characters are. Maybe it’s the similar names (John, George, Joe, etc.) or that every character talks like a philosophy student, but I just couldn’t separate them from each other. The plot and illuminati stuff was fun, but I’d seen so many great reviews and high praise that I was expecting it to be more fun.

Richard Stark's Parker: The Hunter by Darwyn Cooke (Complete) Darwyn Cooke’s effortlessly cool style elevates Stark’s pulp story to something that walks the line between classy and cruel. A murderous criminal is a tricky lead to follow but somehow you still want to see how it all shakes out. If you dig this first book then I recommend getting all 4 of Cooke’s interpretations of Stark’s work.

Scott Pilgrim Vol. 6: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour by Bryan Lee O’Malley and Nathan Fairbairn (Complete) Still love this series after all these years and rereading them in color has been great. I still think the “glow”, as a twist/reveal, doesn’t really work and is somewhat convoluted, but it’s one misstep in what’s a consistently great run. The color version only adds to the quality of the book.

Dragon Ball 3-in-1 Vol. 2 by Akira Toriyama (Complete) This is the sort of light-hearted, good-natured comic I like to read around the holidays. There’s just something about a world where a criminal organization can be a mix of humans, bears, and a monster made of jelly that feels right, you know?

Song Exploder (Podcast) I’ve only listened to a handful of episodes so far but it’s really giving me a new perspective on music and the craft that goes into composing! I recommend starting with songs you like and then expanding from there.

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) A small seasonal interlude! I’ve posted a longer recap on Reddit but the group has temporarily resolved the issue of the island flood and have moved on to an escaped Fairy causing wintery havok and significantly dropping the overall island temperature.

D&D Homebrew Adventure (Menace of Merlin) And so concludes the adventure! I think I could’ve made the final showdown against Merlin a little more climactic, but live and learn. Now we’re taking a break as the group makes up new characters to play in this world!

And that’s it! We did it! Goodbye 2020 and here’s to a bigger and brighter 2021!
