                       they plan to put on their teeth and say or else we will eat you,  brain and bones,  but don’t get that far when he conjures up that particular  -  illusion.  illustrious,  and beautiful,  and alien,  too;  eddie knows this can’t be a place on earth and the stirring in his other confirms it,  but  —  neither of them recognises the locale.  ( it’s disorientating,  too,  like they’ve been tilted on their axis. )

eddie’s lip lifts in a snarl.

        there’s something about this brock person – the man as much as what lurks beneath – that makes her want to ball her fist and deck him hard enough to shatter her own hand. the urge is there; it’s there and ugly and rearing its head, but she curbs it by biting the inside of her cheek and forcing a grin through the snarl.

                    “and here i thought i was givin’ you the benefit of the doubt,” she hisses, shoulders tensing before she rolls them. “fyi; people do use that logic on me, you fuckin’ prick. it’s the way of the world, right?” the truth is, she knows he – they – are right. she feels it down in her bones to where the scorch marks on her soul show who she really is. “be useful and i won’t fuckin’ come for you. end of story.” she’s made deals with worse devils. 

                      eddie snaps his fingers,  and in the same moment straightens up,  a fluid,  not quite human movement.  aided by his other,  pressing at his spine.  “ you see that.  right there.  deciding we’re only useful if we’re useful to you.  what gives you the right to judge us like that? ”  the fluidity follows the shift in tone;  something crackling and inky,  some dual layering to his voice that makes it clear that it’s not eddie speaking,  not the symbiote;  it’s venom.  “ we aren’t anyone’s tool and pretending you can use us is a mistake. ”

long inhale.  eddie fights his way up to the surface,  pushes through the black.  “ why are you so willing to do that if it’s been done to you? ”  measured blink.  he doesn’t know her,  not really,  but he can guess.  “ how many second chances have you had?  how many second chances have you denied other people? ”

                     he doesn’t register the question,  not at first;  there’s just a few seconds too long before his joints unstick and shift.  he half expects them to make the ground of grinding gears when he moves,  rolling his shoulders.  he weighs and measures thought and settles on:  “ you don’t have to do anything. ”
