For those who don’t know about Hanahaki,  It’s a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but when the infection is removed, the victim’s romantic feelings for their love also disappear.

“You’re late.”

Nene flinched at the low, reprimanding tone. She hoped her nimble footsteps would free her from her angel’s wrath. He just had this eerie way of knowing everything that went on in the opera.

“I know,” she muttered apologetically, shuffling to take the sheet music from Hanako’s hands. From just a quick glance, she could see a pout etch itself into his face. “I was so caught up in the investigation that I got distracted. And I had to get my cloak because it gets so cold down here and-“

“What do you have there?”

“Me? …Oh!” Lifting the item of interest to her nose, she smiled lovingly at her gift. “This is a rose that the viscount gave me earlier tonight. Isn’t it beautiful?”

Not to him, no.

Hanako grimaced at the far-off look in her eyes, almost wishing he never asked. Couldn’t she see the problem? Not only did the kid have the gall to give her a rose, he gave her a red one.

“You don’t need such frivolous distractions.” he replied snidely. With the clasp of two gloved fingers, he snatched her gift, flinging it away despite her many protests. Really, what good would it do her if she got swept up in that patron’s drama. She should know better. “Let’s get back to work, shall we?”

Nene puffed her cheeks in defiance. He always got so insufferable whenever she mentioned the viscount or his brother.

“I still haven’t forgiven you for your lesson the other day, you know!” Glancing away from him with a slight ‘hmph,’ she held her nose high in the air. “I’m surprised I still have a voice considering how much you made me sing!”

Hanako quickly took hold of her hand, bringing it around to cradle his sealed cheek.

“I can make you sing for me in other ways, you know.” Tucking her closer to his chest, Hanako laid a low whisper to her ear. “You’d sound just as sweet~”

To no one’s surprise, she blushed violently, scurrying away from him in a huff as his snickers echoed off the lone, stone chamber.

Like every other night, they spent hours upon hours practicing. Aside from her soft hums and faint giggles, her soprano voice rang through the air, sure to entrance any man with her siren song. He wanted her to reach the high note by the next rehearsal, but one yawn from her silenced those thoughts as he readily took her hand and led her back home.

“Good night, angel,” Nene hummed. “Be safe on your way back.”

“Sweet dreams, Yashiro… Ah, but before I forget, I have something for you.”

Reaching into the inner pocket of his cloak, he drew out his very own gift for her, twirling it between his fingers with a small smile. Before she could even touch it, he brushed away her hair, delicately tucking the crimson rose behind the curve of her ear. She nearly shuddered from the lingering touch of his gloved tips.

“Come back to me soon, my songstress.”

His amber eye lowered sweetly, amused by the daze of her ruby eyes and the slight part of her pink lips.

Hello again, anon! :D Okay, this my first fic rec list, so it may not be much. So let's get right to it!

Okay, future me here to tell you that I happened to go berserk on the recs (and I don't have the heart to remove any of them), so this is...quite a long post. ^^;;; 

Here we go anyway.

"Hazy Days of December" by milkteamoon ( @spades-queen ): Honestly one of the best fics I have ever read; it's a story about the things Hanako does when Nene's life is close to its end. Though you also have to be prepared to have your feelings utterly destroyed. I'd recommend reading all of Milk's fics, actually (especially Cicada Summer) if you want some good angst.

"The Disastrous Haunting of Room 404" by banjjakz ( @banjjakz ): Okay, this may already be recommended to you by the others, but this fic is just too good not to include here. Nene summons a ghost in her apartment to grant her wish, and of course, ends up getting involved in much darker things than she expected. Also highly recommend Yu's other fics, but be warned of the darker elements. Still amazing reads.

"Caveat Lector" by WingSongHalo ( @wingsonghalo ): Hanako finds Nene's diary, which may or may not be packed mostly with stuff written about him. Realizations ensue. Okay this fic was such a beautiful mix of fluff and angst and it was amazing. Actually go and read all of Wing's fics, they're all masterpieces in themselves.

"My Soul exists, in you" by Erentii ( @erentii ): An incident leaves Hanako soul bound to Yashiro and more human than he can bargain for. This one is still in progress but it's a good, long fluffy read and the Human Au we all need.

"Red String of Fate" by Legend_of_cupcake: A collection of Hananene oneshots, ranging from fluff to comedy to angst. A great fic to read for fun and inspiration.

"Wonderstruck" by thebonezone ( @naughtydaaikon ): A continuation to Chapter 67, where Hanako and Nene talk about their feelings in private. A very beautifully written fic. I also recommend Kat's other fic, "A Rose By Any Other Name...", depicting what would happen if Nene did die and her path to becoming the Eighth Mystery, as well as "Tell Me, How You're Sleeping Easy", a much-needed Yakuza Au collab.

"Seashells and Starlight" by Baronesscmd ( @baronesscmd ): A fic about Nene finding a seashell that reminds her of Hanako. This one hurt a lot but it has a very satisfying and happy ending, and be sure to read her other fics especially her coffee shop AU series "A Spoonful of Sugar and Stardust".

"A picture hides 1000 words" by mokkemusic ( @mokkemusic ): A fic about Hanako's thoughts during the PP arc and how it feels to have a body. A very reflective and imaginative piece and Dana did amazing for her first Jshk fic.

"Romance is Overrated" by Vipper73: A high school Au where Amane and Nene are two students in love and planning to confess, but not without a lot of lies and pining. It's also a treat for MitsuKou and TsukaMei shippers alike, with a satisfying ending.

"'Cause I Remember the Rush, When Forever Was Us" by sincerelyand ( @sunlightinourheadlights ): A simple story about Amane and Nene navigating a break-up and how it brings up complicated feelings, and the ending is satisfying and brings a sense of hope. Also highly recommend Karen's other fics, because they're all amazing too and deserve a read, especially “but I knew you — your heartbeat on a highline, once in twenty lifetimes”, if you want some more angst.

"From Eden" by Hammsters ( @uglierdaikon ): A story of Nene meeting a strange faery boy near the woods, and how it changes her life. A very long and satisfying read, and the ending will get you good, with well-written fantasy elements. Also highly, highly recommend "Ain't It a Gentle Sound, the Rolling in the Graves?", a royalty AU filled with magic and necromancy.

"Bride of the Underworld" by lilaflo ( @istoleyourboat ): A Hades and Persephone Au that we all never knew we needed, and the romance aspects are all done extremely well as expected from Roxanne's fics. Also please read all of her fairy tale Aus, especially "The Girl From the Sea" and "Eyes of Gold".

"your flowers are my lullaby" by insipidenvy ( @insipidenvy ): A fic about Nene, a lone shrine maiden who wakes up to having to take care of a shrine dedicated to a certain boy god. A very nice, introspective fic with amazing prose.

“now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white“ by Soqqadro: Of course I had to include a Hanahaki fic, in which the manga’s events are told from Nene’s perspective as she falls for Hanako. This one does a great job of building up the angst and pining, and tying it up with a happy ending.

As for author recs, I recommend reading all the other fics of the authors mentioned above! They're all really sweet and talented people. Also I'm so sorry if I missed anyone, and even if you don't see your fic on here, just know that you deserve all the kindness, love and support in the world. 💖
