im working on an 8pg comic about my wrestleguy samson. i printed out some wip pages to make sure i got the scale right. my deadline is tuesday morning................... will i make it in time???

my risoprints came out looking cool! yayyyyy

i was really curious to see how well the colors would overlay on each other. the browns and tans turned out really well, i think! heres how i split up the different color plates and my "digital proof":

more words below the cut. i think riso stuff is cool so ive been enjoying my class lol

at first i just did a color channel split on my whole drawing but further research showed that ppl usually keep lines/text on one layer to reduce how severe the layer misalignments will look. so i ended up splitting just my flats/rendering and then putting the lines exclusively on the blues. i think i went too heavy on the ink in some places (the pants and the anchor) so by the time i got to my blue layer, i think the papers ran out of capacity to absorb ink. hm! i did do some manual adjustments (tbh i used a custom profile that made everything way more greener than i wanted, so i had to change the levels for each of the plates anyway) but maybe i shouldve focused more on preventing 3 plates with 50% ink on the same spot.

i also forgot to clamp off the 0-10% black range in my last set of exports (i kept on making adjustments up until the last minute.... oops) so i got some undesirable noise patterns in some of the lightest areas.

i saw this in some example prints at the class/workshop space but i didnt know if it was a quirk of the program used or the machine itself. now i know: dont have 93% white! i'll have to add a levels adjustment layer to my layer stack to clamp it to pure white.

speaking of layer stack: to do my digital proof i set things up so my grayscale layers would be inside a folder set to multiply blending and with a "color layer effect" enabled. it was really handy because it sure beats just having to imagine the result in your head. and it was easy to turn off the color layer effect and export out the grayscale for the color plate. USEFUL

though i dunno about working directly in layers like this from the start... i already hate keeping lineart separated from color, let alone every single color channel. it was nice to keep things organized in the conversion process however.

showed up 10 minutes late to the riso class im taking and was also critically unprepared to draw something traditional in under an hour <:) oops!!! anyway the tech is all very cool.

heres a comic i made to retroactively make up context

metthew (semi-nomadic courier) and sammy (medical surgeon with chronic pre-syncope) in the humble post-apocalypse (not pictured because i didnt draw it). heres an older drawing of them

every so often i think "hey. arent screentones cool" and then spend several hours messing around with tone layers in csp

though i think the part of them i think "looks cool" is really just the part where you have to be very serious about your value grouping unless you want it to look muddy and bad. which is not specific to screentones
