We recently went to Jordanstone House near Perth in Scotland for my sister’s wedding. This grand house was last inhibited by James Duncan and when his late wife Lady Duncan died the house was purchased, refurbished and sold on. It now is rented out to the public. The house was grand in the scale that a country house should be and had all the features expected such as the dining room, morning room, a vast greenhouse and a billiards room, all of which had been refurbished and only echos what once was. The places where the house lay untouched was the most interesting for me. The servants quarters. The servants quarters are hidden behind doors in walls and stairs closed off for the upstairs guests. As you descend down to the basement the past lives of the people and really come to life. Lost artefacts are left such as the range in the kitchen. Bottles of old homemade wine dated and sat touched in the 1970s. The bells where discs would flick when the upstairs would call. And all manner of bicycles. The one thing which struck me was no matter what was going on upstairs, standards were maintained downstairs. This was most apparent in the structure of the building. The two staircases up to servants quarters were at opposite ends of the building and the only way in and out of them were to go all the way to the basement where each set of stairs met outside the housekeeper’s bedroom.
