She hadn’t ever been the sap to celebrate Valentine’s day, especially when it was just a fake holiday designed to sell a more materialistic lifestyle. Chloe couldn’t get behind the brand. But the sentiment. That was nice. “I was thinking we could go Portland for the day, maybe take in the city a little. I want to start scouting for our indefinite road-trip. Maybe get a little taste of freedom.”

“Heh, I think I could be eighty and they’d still be passing judgement… I know I shouldn’t care at this point, I mean it’s not like they’re the best parents ever or anything, but I do.” Kate shrugged, silently enjoying the warmth of Chloe’s fingers against hers. “Anyway, sorry for being entirely lame and a bummer to boot,” She squeezed Chloe’s hand back.

“But hey, maybe after a couple years of hanging out with you I’ll be cool enough to get a tattoo and fulfil my dreams of becoming a bad girl.” Kate gave her a weak smile. She always felt like she’d constantly be strangled by her parent’s shadows for the rest of her life, but something about being with Chloe made her feel things were less impossible and more improbable, which didn’t sound like a lot, but it meant the world to her.

“I don’t think you’re lame or a bummer,” Chloe squeezed Kate’s hand. “I think you’re just a scared, caged rabbit, looking for an open field to burrow through. If that makes any fucking sense.” Chloe waved away her terrible metaphor and gave Kate a dorky grin. “So what if you can’t get a tattoo right now? Ink doesn’t define who you are. Would you look gorgeous? Absolutely. Am I encouraging you to be the badass you want to be? Of course.”

Her gaze softened as she paused to lean in, meeting Kate’s eyes with look of recognition and acceptance. “But you shouldn’t feel pressured to do anything that you’re not ready to do. Take those risks at your own rate. Because who you are right now? That’s what matters too,” she said as she laced their fingers together. “And you’re already pretty kickass.”
