modern day ouran fandom would be so so much better if people read the manga instead of the anime. sometimes it feels like the only good Ouran theories come from manga-only (or manga-main) sides of the fandom like manga-only ships. most of the time the only thing coming out of the mainstream ouran fandom (or from anyone who's only watched the anime) is crying for a season 2 😭😭

My confession is while I love OHSHC and very much see it as a fun anime more so for antics, as much as I wanted to enjoy y/n works in the fandom or the idea when I was a kid of being with one of the Hosts, I know now that if I went to school with any of them (except Haruhi lol) I would have hatedddd most of them??? Like being a kid was thinking I would get along great with Hikaru and Kaoru bc I liked video games, books, fashion, and having fun; getting to college though is realizing Hikaru and Kaoru would have been insufferable to me and even when they matured I would hate them for being selfish nepo babies lol. It's why it's been very nice revisiting the fandom and looking at grown up Host Club content bc of how creative artists are on the different paths the club could have led, it's been a vicious reminder to me that your first anime loves cannot be your husbandos for life.

I saw this in a text post so my thought isn't original at all lol but I really wish more Ouran fans who see Kaoru as the nicer twin would remember he's only 10% nicer than Hikaru and is still very much a bratty, cunning, easily bored, spoiled boy. I remember most of the fanfiction I read on FF.net almost always depicted him as very sweet and thoughtful without many thorns or spice (and always in a wilting flower way bc of his internal conflict and struggles which isn't wrong but not his entire personality). And he can be sweet! And he is more thoughtful than Hikaru and definitely reads more! But Kaoru is even more cunning and scheming than Hikaru can be! It's why, even though I'm actually not a big fan of the pairing, KyoKao, I really do enjoy the renaissance in fanworks the pairing has bc the authors and artists do keep Kaoru's bratty, scheming side in all of their works along with his thoughtfulness, rampant metaphors, and overthinking. Kaoru was my favorite character when I watched the show as a 12 year old and I really enjoy the latest stories that don't minimize him as a character, along with pursuing the idea of him having a happy ending. ty!

My confession is I felt like the twins and Kyoya overall seemed to have the worst childhoods; I know for the twins all of their family members are shown to love them dearly and actually know the difference between them but like. That doesn't change that their mother purposefully calls them by their brother's name, their dad is so pale in presence that they don't seem to know when he's always there, their grandma can be as devious as they are and is a roaming adventurer, and none of the adults in their life were there for them. While Kyoya's childhood was a series of cold tests and lessons and a blanket of "you're just the third son" until he met Tamaki. I feel for Tamaki a lot bc his situation was also terrible and I don't mean to suggest that the Host Club should compete in the worst childhood Olympics, but as scummy as his Dad can be, I do feel like Tamaki was always genuinely cared for and also overall had parents who supported his genuine desires. I don't think Kypya would ever commit to therapy, but praying the twins get there bc y'all got some work to undo :C

My confession is I wish we had seen more of the Black Magic Club! I thought they were cute, and as someone who usually falls into the social outcast/weird kid category in real life, I liked seeing the group of "nonpopular" kids against the popular kids, the Host Club. Plus, I thought with how much the Host Club characters champion being true to themselves it would be interesting to see how much they would consider that ideology in the face consistently of other teens who are true to themselves but in a way most of the Host Club don't like. And I'm a sucker for gothic romance and gothic aesthetic, so I think it would have been fun if the Black Magic club had seriously pursued being a rival to the Host Club by selling the gothic romance: the mystery, the tragedy, the dramatic escapades and monologues....that or even a side chapter of the Host club finding out the Black Magic Club was taking a lot of their clientele in for potions or spells like spells to find lost items, clarity spells to understand your feelings better, and maybe good fortune spells for when you pursue the Host of your dreams.

My confession is I really wished there had been more dedication to arcs for Mori and Honey; I felt bad for them being depicted as the neighbors in Tamaki's mind theatre for his family set up because it felt like the upperclassmen weren't really apart of the group/family dynamic.

I HAVE LITERALLY BEEN THINKING THIS FOR SO LONG Like why are Mori and Honey just DESIGNED to be background characters?? It feels like they couldn't have been made into romantic interests/ship tease for Haruhi so they were designated useless 😭😭

kyoya's arc still feels incomplete to me tbh. i wish we knew more about his future because it looks so doomed if i'm being honest, like i doubt "maybe love could blossom!" in an arranged marriage is a likely situation. in the extra bonus chapters there's such an underlying feeling that he's gonna end up suppressed and restrained like the rest of his family even if he talks about freedom and beating the odds. shippers come save that man ig

I guess this isn't really a confession, but for people who have watched/read both the manga and the anime, do you see them as separate timelines, the events of the manga happening after the anime, do you pick and choose which details you like from each to make your own canon, or maybe even a secret 4th or 5th option that's more specific? I'm curious on how they kinda coexist to people

Another confession: I wish....there was less misogyny in the series overall? I don't expect a full nuanced discussion from general media bc you can't always cover every point of a topic in one character, arc, or story. And I think Ouran does a great job fulfilling it's a niche as a romcom/found family, but seeing a lot of the female characters and even eventually Haruhi not have/or lose their defining personality traits was disappointing. And while I wasn't entirely against Lobelia being overtly man hating that it would clash with the Host Club, I still wished that they weren't completely portrayed in the negative and kind of had hoped instead of their episode being centered on stealing away Haruhi, they could have instead flirted with the regular host club patrons and shown the guys that they don't have to rely on fake personas to charm the girls, they can just ask their clients what they like to do and their interests and that their female clients, even if they are rampant fangirls lol, they also have diverse lives. I apppreciated that we got individual stories for certain girls and that Tamaki was genuinely sincere, but I would have liked more individuality for their patrons beyond their visual designs (though I do love that the regular patrons are noticeable!).

Also, the theme I wish Ouran had done the most was an RPG theme: the hosts as different classes (Rogues for the Twin, Bard for the Tamaki, Wizard maybe for Kyoya, Archer for Haruhi, Paladin for Mori, Monk for Honey) and maybe introducing tabletop rpgs to their guests!! Each table could have their own campaign for the guests to play with as themselves/their own characters. I just think it'd be a lot of fun!

Headcanon/confession: I love seeing the new content for OHSHC from old and new fans, and I love how many have involved more queer content or coding for the characters. But part of me wishes it wasn't so Westernized sometimes; it's like when writers apply the US school system/lingo to a Japanese setting, I understand writing from your comfort zone but non-Western cultures or even just outside the US in general, queer people don't all use certain or specific labels. And part of Haruhi and her dad's appeal to me was that neither of their identities were clear cut. I fully support taking away the derogatory language in general and exploring the OHSHC characters' possible sexualities; but, I kind of wish the grey areas for sexuality and gender norms was more depicted in recent fanwork.
