“Just a moment,’ Celia says. She lifts her hand in a delicate gesture at the raven. In response it caws again and spreads its large wings, taking flight and swooping toward the stage, gaining speed as it approaches. Descending quickly it dives, flying directly at Celia and not wavering or slowing as it reaches the stage, but approaching at full speed. Chandresh jumps back with a start, almost falling over Marco as the raven crashes into Celia in a flurry of feathers. And then it is gone. Not a single feather remains and Celia is once again wearing a puffed-sleeve black jacket, already buttoned over her black-and-white gown... ...Bailey looks again at the woman to his left, and she winks at him before standing and walking to the center of the circle... ...At the end of the act, the illusionist takes a bow with a pivoting turn, acknowledging the entire circle as the audience applauds. “The finished clock is resplendent. At first glance it is simply a clock, a rather large black clock with a white face and a silver pendulum...Then, then it becomes something else. The changes are slow. First, the color changes in the face, shifts from white to grey, and then there are clouds that float across it, disappearing when they reach the opposite side...figures and objects, perfectly carved flowers and planets and tiny books with actual paper pages that turn. There is a silver dragon that curls around part of the now visible clockwork, a tiny princess in a carved tower who paces in distress, awaiting an absent prince. Teapots that pour into teacups and minuscule curls of steam that rise from them as the seconds tick. Wrapped presents open. Small cats chase small dogs. An entire game of chess is played....After midnight, the clock begins once more to fold in upon itself. The face lightens and the cloud returns. This is a true story: When I was five years old, I traced a brontosaurus from a handout that I found in some of my mom’s classroom materials (she was a first grade teacher). Pinning it to my wall, I wished with all my little heart that I had actually drawn the brontosaurus myself. I later discovered that a person cannot learn to draw by wishing and that brontosauruses never actually existed. I tried to let the brontosaurus go, but for years I felt a great sadness that my old dinosaur friend was tossed away into the same recycle bin as Pluto's planetary status. Recently, I found out that brontosaurus was reinstated as a genus classification! My childhood goal was once again obtainable! I drew this brontosaurus the way I remembered him from the handout. These are my #Best9of2017 As I was reflecting over the year I realized it was a big one for my family and me. Katie and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary. This was our first year with our son’s T1D. I finally finished my degree. I started a new job. My wife changed jobs. We saved a bird at a playground. We got an Echo Dot...it’s like we live on a starship now! Obviously some of these are more significant than others. Overall, I just feel happy and blessed to have who I have, to have what I have, and I am hoping for more happy surprises to come in 2018...AND I wish for the same for you and and those in your life. When we were kids, my sister was afraid of the bathroom in our house because she thought that the devil lived in the toilet, but she never told us back then. As a kid, I always thought the devil had a pet bulldog, and I figured he probably used all that fire to cook soup. Also, during my childhood everyone I knew had fluffy rugs that hugged their toilets and matching fluffy toilet lid covers. Are those still a thing? Do you have weird things that you thought as a kid?
