While these attempts had various goals, and succeeded to various degrees, one question remains: did the authors get paid billions of dollars for recoloring pictures? No? Then their attempts were objectively inferior to one group of people who did!

These were part of promo materials I was designing. The image of Sarge posing with the BFG was for the back of a dvd case, and the Doomguy was to go on the front cover.

Experimentation, oh yeah!

A still frame from my 2005 animated Doom film, given a 2014 face lift. It's amazing what a single "multiply" layer can do for the drama of an image. 

In case you don't know what's going on here, this is just a before and after. What I did was created a new layer in PSP 7, painted it all black with the bucket, set it to 'multiply', changed the opacity, and then began to carve out the darkness with the free select tool.This gives a sense of the light and glows going on in the scene. I think it's a very big improvement.
