17) Who is more protective?

Hoshina, full stop.

Okonogi worries for him more than anyone else and does all she can to support him on the battlefield - but at the end of the day, there's no one better to protect Soshiro than Soshiro. That said, Konomi can get a little passive-aggressive whenever she happens to overhear someone mocking the Vice Captain for his poor gun aptitude... or any other areas they might assume he's lacking in.

Hoshina on the other hand could probably stand to be a little less protective.

Deep-rooted insecurities and natural competitiveness make for an intense combination. Protecting Konomi from kaiju is one thing, but he's taken it upon himself to protect her from other dangerous creatures too. Rumor has it he even pulled his fellow officer aside for 'a little chat' after hearing they'd asked Operations Leader Okonogi out on a date - and that said Operations Leader was seemingly uncomfortable with the invitation.

(At least, that's how Hoshina interprets the heavy sigh Konomi gives in response to their Captain's sage advice on the matter or lack thereof.)

"Ya can't date Okonogi-chan, y'see," the Vice Captain slings an arm over the other man's shoulders as they walk through a secluded portion of the training grounds, eyes more sharp and threatening than the combat knife he's gripping. "'Cause I'm dating Okonogi-chan."

Liar.

The woman he wasn't dating would never approve of such deceitful intimidation tactics, not even if they were dating - but it's not like anyone's gonna tell her about it. That's what the knife is for.

("Stop threatening the new recruits and ask her out yourself." - Captain Ashiro Mina, probably.)

18) Who talks to the other while they are sleeping?

Hoshina has no problem talking to Okonogi while she's sleeping, which usually means she's not sleeping for very long. She'll crack her eyes open to glare at him or mumble a few reaffirming noises to let him know that yes, yes, she's listening... but after a while she has no choice but to shut him up by force. This usually involves covering his mouth with a hand or a pillow or her mouth - whatever gets the job done.

One could say Okonogi has spoken to Hoshina while he was sleeping, but that's not entirely accurate. Konomi has given work reports to Soshiro while he lay comatose in the ICU, choking back tears so she might string more words together. Talking was suppose to help, wasn't it?

She's even brought her laptop to keep busy 'till he wakes up.

I was thinking, and I came up with a Kaiju No. 8 couple, and it will not leave my head:

Hakua Igararshi and Aoi Kaguragi

I initially thought it was funny for one of the tallest people in the series (Aoi) be with someone just a little bit taller than him. As I kept thinking about them, I realized they'd have an interesting dynamic as a couple. Hakua being a cheery uber friendly gal and Aoi being a stone-cold stoic and militaristic guy.

I'm curious about what you think of it (no pressure to like it/respond, I'm just interested in your thoughts)

Hakua x Aoi, hmm...? Well...

It's hard to feel much about it one way other the other!

Poor Hakua hasn't had a single ounce of character development, which is a real shame because there's an interesting contrast to be made between her and Vice Captain Hoshina. They both have older siblings serving as captains, but unlike Hoshina, Hakua seems to get on very well with her big sister and doesn't have any feelings of resentment or inadequacy that we've seen. It could've been a great opportunity to put Hakua on Hoshina's radar for very unique reasons compared to the rest of the team that would have added so much to her character!!

But alas. None of that.

As for Aoi... I just find him so, so......

boring.

I'm sorry! I'm sorry!! Character design, personality, plot relevance... he just does absolutely nothing for me. Objectively I know he's a nice guy, and I do appreciate the comradery he's shown in caring for his teammates. I like how he appears stoic and mean but is overall a nice guy. But! He's just so dry!!!

However, I like to try and see the logic in various pairings even if they don't appeal to me specifically. Just how would these two work?

I definitely agree that it would be fun to see him bouncing off the high-energy Hakua!! That would solve a lot of the issues I have with Aoi ^^;;; The fact that Hakua is even taller than him is great as well, since it would lend well to them teaming up for sparring sessions and the like. Even better if she can actually overpower him.

And if you want to dig deeper, there's is further material to work with.

Aoi (and Haruichi) were sent to train with the 2nd Division after all - you know, the one Hakura's big sis is running! So it would be cute if they checked up on each other through her - how is Hakua holding up in the 3rd Division? Is Aoi pulling his weight over there?? It'd be especially funny if Jura is on a call with Hakua only to pass the phone over to Aoi after she gets sick of them asking about one another.

"Just date already! Captain's orders!!"

They may not appeal to my personal tastes much, but there are ways to make it happen ^^
