Nova’s Semester
So, when i started this “story” i started it with the idea of what i wanted the end of the story to look like and i wanted to just get a feel for what kind of writer i am and i realized one-shot stories would probably be better for me as a writer then full-length chapters. So i will be discontinuing the story and i will be creating one shot stories instead, thank you for the understanding

                                                Chapter 7
The chanting of the early bird outside her window bright and early in the morning was usually one of Nova’s favorite things to wake up to. Now she wishes for the bird's head to explode, to give it a taste of its own medicine. The insistent chirping was making her own head explode. Opening her eyes her retinas were met with the bright rays of the morning sun. Throwing her hand up to block the sun, she rolls over to the side of her bed and grabs her phone from the charger, groaning when her bare feet meet with the cold floor tile for the briefest of seconds. She flips over to the other side of her bed and is met with another face full of sunshine. Rubbing her eyes, she finally sits up, letting out a loud yawn, she turns her phone on and she sees she has a couple missed calls from Alaric. He was probably freaking out over her, and she let out a snort at the thought. In the mists of her grogginess, she didn't register the fact that the sun was not supposed to be in her face when she got up for school. Usually, it was pitch black out when she awoke, and when she left the house, it was usually just light enough outside to make the sky a dangerous gray color. Standing from her bed she walks over to the window to pull the curtains shut. Once finished Nova flops back over to her bed and to her phone which is laid on top. She picks up her phone to check the time, and only now does she register the sun's place in the sky when it matches the time on her phone. 10:15 is what her phone said, in a slight panic Nova gets out of bed to throw some pants on. In her rush to her dresser, she proceeds to stub her toe against the corner of it. The impact caused her to let out a couple less than holy words “Jesus, Mother Fucking, why, why!”  Holding her foot in her hands she hops a couple times swearing some more too before calming down enough to put some pants on.
The second she opens her door she's met with the strong smell of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Following the heavenly smell, Nova jogs down the stairs and when she rounds the corner it's a sight she's never seen before. Elena is crouched over the oven with Jeremy by her side coaching her on what she needed to do. The longer she stood there the more his coaching just seemed like nagging. “Elena, that's not how you do it,”, “Elena do it this way,”, “Elena let me do it,”,  “Elena why does it look like that,” This goes on for a while before Nova clears her throat to try and grab their attention. Both her siblings turn around and try to hide whatever they're concocting behind them. “Nova, what are you doing up?” Elena asks. Jeremy gives her a puzzled look and then shakes his head. “Uh, well, it's,” she looks back down at her phone for the time, “10:25, and nobody woke me up for school sooo,” she en longs at the end of her sentence trying to gauge an answer as to why she wasn't woken school. Elena shifts from one foot to another, and Jeremy scoffs and turns back to the food behind them. “Well with what happened yesterday I just thought you could use a rest day?” her answer sounds more like a question. “Elena the doctor cleared me to go to school. My concussion was not severe enough for that, plus I didn't get a doctor's note for an excused absence.” She was already upset her attendance record was going to be messed up and on the second day of her last year no less. Jeremy sighs “She was afraid something else would happen to you today, so she didn’t make you go to school.” When has Elena ever not been a maniac about something school related? Especially with something as big as attendance. Nova scratches the back of her head and shrugs, “Well alright, so what are you making?” Elena immediately starts to pout, and Jeremy lets out a huff of laughter. “They’re supposed to be blueberry pancakes, but Elena messed up the batter.” Elena whirls around and slaps Jeremy on the arm. “Not true,” she says. “You can't cook for shit.” Elena rolls her eyes at his comment. “” Well, I wouldn't have needed to take over if you weren't burning the batter.” Nova lets out a snort and Elena shoots her a glare. Jeremy laughs too and shakes his head “This was supposed to be a surprise, your favorite breakfast, blueberry pancakes with bacon and eggs on top, but since I guess you're here already it saves me the embarrassment of tripping upstairs and dropping your food.”  Nova laughed again. “Thanks, guys, but I’m really not injured enough to earn breakfast in bed.” Picking up her plate, Jeremy brings it over to the kitchen table setting it down lightly, then he points at the seat in front of it. “Here you go, kid.” Nova skips over to the table giddy with excitement. Her brother hands her a fork and she digs in almost immediately. The warm soft eggs mesh delicately with the crispy greasy bacon and the dough-like pancakes make the entire thing 10 times better. As she scarfs down her breakfast, she hears the doorbell ring. “I got it,” Elena said, stepping away into the front hall. Nova knows she's out of earshot Nova immediately turns to Jeremy, she squints her eyes at him, and Jeremy takes notice. “What?” Chewing her food slowly she answers, “What's the catch?” Jeremy raises his brow” You know, for breakfast in bed?” He just shrugs “When it comes to Elena, probably anything.”
She nods her head in silent agreement. Moments later Stefan Salvatore’s head pops up around the corner. He has an infectious smile on his face, one Nova can't help but reciprocate. “Hey, guys, what 's going on?” Stefan steps into the kitchen and hauls himself onto the counters looking between the two of them. “Nothing much, just eating, what are you doing?” Nova replied with a mouth full of food. Elena walks into the room making a disgusted face “Nov don't speak with your mouth full.'' Jeremy laughs while Stefan continues. “I’m not quite so sure we've been summoned up on the pretense of a good time.” “Yes, we have my dear brother, speaking of which Elena, my dear how about you tell us what this good time is huh? Nova stops chewing when it takes Elena a second to answer. “Well since Nova doesn’t have school today, I was thinking we could all go out to the lake house today, you know, to just relax or something.” Nova raises her brow “Or something?” she asks Elena huffs and crosses her arms “Is it too much to ask for some family quality time around here?” Nova countries eat her breakfast like she didn't hear her sister, and Jeremy looks the other way and starts to fiddle with his fingers. “Well, I for one think it's a great idea,” Stefan interjected, of course, he did. He liked or did anything she said. “Don't you Damon?” Damon nods his head in faux agreement “Totally, a full day with my annoying little brother, my girlfriend, and her two annoying little siblings in one house for a couple hours sounds like a splendid idea Stefan.” he claims sarcastically. Elena giggles and both Stefan and Damon look at her with big dopey grins on their faces. The sickenly sweet display makes her feel like she's going to throw up. She turns to her brother, and he rolls his eyes and pretends to shove his finger down his throat while fake gagging. Nova covers her mouth and snorts at his antics. This grabs Damon’s attention “Whacha laughing at sparky?” Nova calms down a little and lets out a cough. “Um, nothing Damon, I was going to say a day at the lake house sounds like a great idea.”  Elena’s face lights up at the admission “Really?” she asks with too much enthusiasm, and Nova already regrets her decision. “Yeah sure, don't have anything better to do,” she recalled with a shrug. All eyes turned to Jeremy, and his back was turned to everyone, he was currently doing the dishes., or at least pretending to. The sudden silence makes him stop and turn around “What about you karate kid, want to hop on the bandwagon?”   Jeremy pauses and sighs “I uh-,” he turns around and his eyes flit around to everyone before they land on Nova. She already has her best pleading face ready to go, her brows furrowed not in anger but worry, and she pouts her lips. It's the look that means please do not leave me alone all day with them, only God knows what I’ll hear. He closes his eyes and sighs “Yeah whatever, I'll go too.” Elena gasps loudly and Nova sighs, “Really, you mean it Jer?” He shrugs “Yeah sure why not?” Elena jumps with joy “Alrighty everybody start getting around!” Elena immediately runs to her room to get ready herself. The brothers follow not far behind her and when they're out of sight Nova drops her head onto the table. Jeremy finally turns on the water and turns to her “Really?” is all he says. He’s leaning against the island, arms crossed, and ankles are too, he looks like a disappointed dad. “Come on man we can hike and find ourselves a bomb-ass smoking spot man, this doesn't have to be all bad.” Jeremy smiles and nods his head “Sounds like a good plan, I just got some stuff this week so we can use mine.” Nova throws her fist in the air in celebration “This day is turning out better than I imagined.”:
Rolling down the overgrown driveway towards the family vacation house, brought back so many memories for Nova, both good and bad ones. Looking to her left she could see the blue lake stretching across the land in front of her. She remembers fishing with her father and mother when she was young, it was something she never really enjoyed, but for the sake of her poor father’s heart, she entertained him and fished whenever he wanted to. She remembered all the times she and her sibling would jump off the dock together, hand in hand as mom screamed from the porch for us to be careful. All the memories just kept flooding back the closer they got. When they finally reached the house Damon parked the car and everyone got out to stretch. Mainly just the people shoved in the back seat which includes herself, her sister, and Stefan. Since both Damon and Jeremy were bigger than everyone, they got the front seat privilege while the tiny people got shoved to the back. Stretching her body, her bones crackled and popped with her movements. Looking up at the house she used to frequently visit as a child, she couldn't help but feel a slight resentment towards it. From what she didn’t know she just knew today needed to be a good day. So, taking a deep breath she walks up to the house, along with everyone else. Reaching the door Elena brings out the keys and it takes her a moment to open them, but eventually, she does. She pushes on the door, and it gives way to the house. Walking inside it isn't much warmer than it was outside. “Reading her mind Elena turns and asks Damon to get a fire going, Damon answers her request with a mock solute. Walking around the house the floor and everything else has a slight sheen of dust covering it. Even if Elena, Damon, and Stefan had just been here not too long ago. Walking past all the rooms she finally finds the one meant for her. Grabbing the rusty handle, she turns the knob and pushes the door in. The hinges make a loud creaking sound as it swings open, she makes a mental note that she’ll need to oil it later. For now, she takes in the room she hasn't seen in years. “Her room is the dirtiest when it comes to dust coverage. There might have been just a sheen in the living room but there was an entire blanket of dust settled over the top of all her things. She had some stuffed animals in a corner of the room all of them stacked haphazardly over one another. The walls are still covered in various boy band posters, some of which weren't even together anymore.
Rolling up her sleeves she starts to take down anything and everything that reminds her of her old self. She threw the stuffed animals into the hallway closet along with the floral bedding that covered her bed. She replaced the bedding with a plain white sheet, pillowcase, and blanket. She carefully took down the posters and rolled them up and put those into the hallway closet as well. Her room here wasn't the biggest. It was a circular room with a bed in the upper left side of the room and the tv was in the upper right area of the room. She had a small vanity dresser in the bottom left next to the door, when she was done with her bed she moved on to that next. She started by taking down all the photos in the mirror. The pictures had a variety of her loved ones in them: her mom, her dad, her brother, her sister, and even some photos of her and her Aunt Jenna. When she took down the photo of her and her Aunt Jenna, she just stared at it. The picture was one of her favorites of her and her aunt. She remembers the day very clearly.
The bright mid-summer sun was beating down on the small little garden in front of the house. She and her Aunt Jenna were bent over that garden trying to salvage what they could from the massive heat wave they had just experienced. The temperatures reached almost 102 degrees. She remembers looking for her Aunt Jenna everywhere and when she finally did find her, she was hunched over the garden digging, poking, and watering everything she could. She remembered asking if her aunt needed help with anything and that is how she got roped into helping her fix her garden. After working in 99-degree weather for a couple houses she had sweat everywhere, she had so much sweat on her forehead that it was accumulating and dripping into her eyes. When they were just about to finish up Elena and Jeremy came outside. Jeremy with some water, and Elena with a camera. In the photo, she’s wiping her forehead with her hand and giving a thumbs up with the other and her Aunt Jenna is smiling from ear to ear with one thumb up and one hand on her shoulder. It's a picture she always loved of her and her Aunt Jenna, even if they did look like sweaty pigs.
The more she stared at the photo the sadder she became so she just stuck the photo into the makeshift box she had and when the final photo was removed from the vanity, she shoved the box to the top shelf in the hallway closet and then shut the door. Walking back into the room she finally deems the room fit enough to be in and she exits the room to go find herself something to eat from the lunches they brought along with them. Entering the living room, she met with a less-than-pleasant sight, Elena was sandwiched between both Damon and Stefan. Damon was sucking on her neck grabbing her butt and Stefan had his tongue down her throat groping her breasts. Her brother must have had the same idea as her because she could hear his noise of disgust. “Come on guys really? We've barely been here for two seconds.” he throws his hands up in defeat. Turning the way, he came Nova can hear him grumble more insults before he disappears completely down the hall. When they both pull away from her Elena is the only one that looks guilty this time. Stefan doesn't say anything, he just buries his head into Elena's chest not wanting to deal with whatever was happening. Damon just smirked and waved his hand at her as if telling her to run along. She groans in disgust, and she decides she's no longer hungry.  Instead of heading to her room though, she makes a detour to Jeremy’s. She only has to knock a few times before he answers. “Hey kid, what's up.” Nova gives him a look before she says, “Do you want to go on a hike?” it takes Jeremy a few seconds to register what she’s asking “oh- OH a hike right, yeah hang on just one second.” She nods “Cool I’ll be outside I’ll let Elena know.” he nods in agreement “Alright sounds good.”  She turns from the door as he shuts it making her way back into the living room, praying that Elena and the boys have at least moved to a private room. Walking into the living room she only finds Elena this time. “Hey where did tweedle dee and tweedle dum go?” Elena giggles. “They went to gather firewood, looks like we don't have any.” She says as she points to the empty wood holder next to the fireplace. “Oh ok, hey you would mind if me and Jeremy went for a hike, would you?” Elena sits on the couch with the chips of her choice “Yeah I don’t care just watch your step, and please dress warmly.” she says dismissively as she waves her hand to emphasize that she couldn't care less. “Ok cool we will be ho- back soon,” Nova couldn't bring herself to think of this place as home anymore, it was just an old structure full of old memories a reminder of the people who didn’t exist anymore.

                                                     Chapter 6
When Elena finally arrives, she's soon transported from the cot in the nurse's office to the backseat of someone's car. The setting sun and all the movement was causing her vision to blur, so when it finally cleared she realized she was alone in the backseat Stefan’s car, with Damon in the front passenger seat. “Hiya sparky how are you feeling?” he said softly, giving her a smile, a genuine smile. Even if he was a massive dick most of the time, he could be a good guy, sometimes. “I’m ok,  I guess, no need for stitches, that's good right?” He replies almost instanlly “Yup, better than having you bleed out.”  she lets out a huff of laughter.
The silence only lasts a few seconds before Damon opens the passenger side door and slides out of the car. Before she can ask what he's doing he closes the door and rounds the car to the backseat door to her left. He opens it and slides in, “So tell me,” he starts closing the door behind him “What really happened?” Rubbing her eyes she lets out a yawn. “I tripped and fell over someone's backpack and smashed my head against the corner of my teacher's desk.” She said sheepishly, embarrassed now that she realized this was the cover story she was giving. She was also careful not to mention the name of her teacher fearing she would get the same reaction from him as she got from Alaric. Her head starts to feel like it's splitting in two when Damon starts to laugh loudly. In the tiny space it was booming and paired with how sensitive she was right now, it was  agony. “Really sparky? Alaric made all this fuss because you tripped and fell?” All she could do was groan and shrug in response. “He chuckled again, quietly this time “Sorry. '' he pats her leg and sighs.
“Here I thought someone hurt you, well with the way Alaric was talking.” she paused to look at him “What?” she said puzzled. “Oh yeah he was freaking out, said something about your teacher or something, thought he might have hurt you.” She stays quiet after that trying to think of why Alaric had such a grudge against Mr.Mikaelson. “ Hey Sparky?” She's snapped from her stupor and focuses back on Damon as he speaks “Yeah Damon?” he looks out the car window for a second, then continues on with his question “Are you lying to me?” he puts his hands up in a form of surrender and continues. “I know you might not want Elena to know what truly happened, so I wont tell her if you don't.”  a beat of silence passes before she answers “Damon, why would I lie to you about giving myself an injury?” he sighs “Because maybe you didn't give it to yourself?” She can't tell if he really thinks she's lying or he’s just asking to ask. “Damon, I tripped and fell, what more do you want from me?” she slumps in her seat “The truth, come on sparky cough it up.”  “I am telling you the truth, I swear!”  her voice raised an octave, frustrated she was getting interrogated again apparently. Damon hums in thought “I for one think you're lying, but I can't force you to talk if you don't want to talk.” She waits for him to say something else but he doesn't. Before she processes what just happened she looks to her right to see Stefan and Elena walking out of the school. Stefan looks pissed Elena looks confused and ‘worried’.
. Stefan rounds the car getting into the driver's seat and Elena in the passenger one. “Hey Nov, how are you feeling?” her sister said. Shifting in her seat she clears her throat and repeats what she told Damon. “Thats good, getting stitches suck.” Stefan says, his voice has a bit of a bite to it, it just confirmed to her that he is indeed angry. He pulls out of the parking lot sharply, sending her flying straight into Damon. He catches her and lightly pushes her back in place “Hey man how bout you slow down a little huh?” Stefan scoffs propping his elbow against the door “How about you shut up Damon.” Rolling his eyes Damon doesn't comment further, deciding to leave it at that. The ride home is quiet and slightly strained with some questions seemingly unanswered. They were probably going to ask when they got home when everything was said and done, so all she could do was mentally prepare for it and enjoy the silence she had now.
Pulling into the driveway she can see the silhouette of her brother sitting on the swing resting on the front porch. At the sight of the car he immediately gets up and starts making his way over to them. He quickly jogs over to her side and yanks her from the car by her arm as she opens the door. “Jeremy be careful!” She can hear her sister fuss but all she's worried about is returning the bone crushing hug he has her in. “I was so worried, when Alaric called I thought something bad happened, I'm so glad you're ok.”  She chuckled into his chest taking a deep breath and squeezing him tighter. “Yeah, I’m ok Jer, just a bit banged up.” he pulls away and holds her at arms length to examine the bandage on her head. “What happened?” “She tripped and fell.” she heard Damon say. Jeremy's sudden cackle startles her, “You tripped?” He questioned, he doubled over with his hands on his knees to keep him from falling over. “Alaric made so much fuss over your clumsy ass.” His laughter is contagious and soon she’s laughing hysterically too. Elena and the brothers watch on from the porch waiting for the both of them to stop giggling. “You guys come on, it's cold out, let's head inside.” Their laughter dies at Elena’s request “You're more than capable of walking into the house without us aren't you Elena? Why don't you go inside, we'll come in when we're ready.”  Elena crosses her arms and starts to pout “Fine, when your done Nova come talk to me.'' She turns and stomps into the house with the brothers right on her trail.
“Hey, are you sure you're ok?” Jeremy asks her, she gives him a small smile  “I’ll be ok, don't worry Jer.”  looking down he starts to kick the rocks underneath his feet. “Are you ok?” she asks. Looking away from her he answers “Yeah, I’ll be ok too.”  She nods and takes a deep breath; she also starts to kick at some of the rocks beneath her own feet.  Slowly she begins to walk to the open front door ``You coming?” she asks. Putting his hands in his pockets Jeremy kicks the rock away from his foot for good and replies “Yeah, lets go.”  Walking through the house, she maneuvers into the kitchen and heads straight towards the medicine cabinet, so she could get some painkillers. Her and Jeremy part ways her to the kitchen and him to his room “Night Jer.” “Night kid, hope you feel better in the morning.” she gives him another smile  “I hope so too. '' is her reply.
Walking into the kitchen she grabs the bottle of medicine and opens it when she hears Elena pipe up.   “Nova, can you sit down please?”  she nods her head as she spills the meds into her hand. “Yeah just a sec.” Grabbing a cup and filling it with water she downs the pills in one go. Taking a couple more sips before dumping the rest of the cups contents into the sink along with the cup she rounds the corner of the Island and leans up against the front of it “What’s up?” she questions.Elena rolls her eyes ``Sit down Nova.” She pulls out the chair next to her and slaps the seat a couple times for good measure. Sitting down on the chair, she can't help but feel nervous, the forgotten knot in her stomach making an appearance at the wrong time. “So I've heard different versions of this story but I want to hear from you what happened.”
Nova doesn't think this kinda question deserves its own intervention but she answered hesintantly “Um.. I was getting up out of my seat to leave class and I tripped over some girl's backpack, and I fell onto the corner of the teachers desk.” Elena nodded her head a couple times, licking her lips, she asked another question. “What happened after, do you remember?”  “Remember, of course I remember I didn't lose my memory Elena I just hit my head.”  Stefan and Damon share a glance before Stefan clears his throat. “So do you or do you not remember what happened.” He leans back in his chair and crosses his arms. Nova scoffs “After I hit my head the teacher had someone go get the nurse and he gave me tissues to hold to my head, when the nurse arrived she put me in a wheelchair and took me to the nurses office, I stayed their for a while then Alaric showed up, flipped his shit because I was injured, told me I needed to switch classes, then you guys showed up and now were here.” Damon frowns  “Just what is the name of said teacher Nova?” Nova leans back in her chair and tilts her head to the side “Why do I feel like this is an interrogation?” Damon scoffs “Because it is sparky.” Elena hits him in the arm and Stefan whacks him in the head. “No it’s not Nov.” Elena glares at Damon ``We just want to know what happened from your perspective.” Nova rubs her eyes and yawns again. “Well I just told you my perspective, can I go shower, I have blood in my hair.” Stefan throws his head back, she expects a snap back or retort but he says nothing. “Not quite, there's a couple more questions I want to ask you.” she shifts in her seat uncomfortably  “What else is there to know?” All three of them look at each other then at her. “Well how about you answer my question sparky, who exactly is your teacher?” closing her eyes she rested her head on the table in front of her “Does it really matter?”  “Yes,” said all three in unison. “I don't remember his first name but his name is Mr. Mikaelson.” A deadly silence fills the room. The three of them share another look “And why did Alaric tell you to switch classes?” She honestly could say for sure so her best guess was. “Uh.. I think he said something along the lines of, he's a bad person, he brings bad luck, then he told me he thought it was in my best interest to switch classes, so i'm going to go down to the office tomorrow to see what I can do.”
A deep frown settled on Nova’s face, and Elena noticed “Do you even want to change classes Nov?” she scoffs “ I mean kinda, I think Alarics blowing this whole thing out of proportion.” Leaning forward to put himself back in the conversation Stefan rests his head on his hands. “So why do it, why change classes.”  she ponders for a moment then answers him “Because Alaric said I needed to.” she shrugs.  This catches his attention “Really, so you don't want to switch classes yet you're going to switch classes because Alaric said so?” she shrugs again “Well, Arnold’s in this class so I could really use a class without him this year.”  Damon snorts and wiggles his eyebrows ``OoOoOoO Arnold. '' he said in a high pitched girly voice. “No not oooo Arnold, he needs to stay far far away from her.” For once she and her sister actually agree on something. “So your just going to change your schedule, just like that, it took Elena three weeks of asking for you to do your electives in the first place.” Nova shrugs once again, she notices she’s been doing that a lot lately when it comes to conversing with the Salvatore brothers.  “I don't know Stefan, Alaric just told me it was in my best interest to switch classes, has Alaric really ever been wrong?” They all answer roughly at the same time.  “Yes'', “All the time.” “When is he never.” Really shows you the trust the three of them have in him.
“So Alaric just said to do it, and you're doing it?” Nova rolls her eyes  “I mean when you put it that way it just sounds bad.”   Stefan nods his head in consideration “ Yeah he compelled her.” Elena’s head snapps to look at him “Stefan!” she exclaims. He scoffs “What it's not like you were going to make me do the same thing too.” Nova is extremely confused “Compelled?” Her attention is brought to Damon when he moves her chair to face him. “Sorry for this Sparky.” before she can ask what he's talking about he grabs her arm and starts to speak. “You will forget this conversation happened, you don't know anything about compulsion , and you won't listen to Alaric's order.” Stefan stands up furious “Damon what the hell, we can't just leave her with him, he could-.” “Stefan,” Elena interupted “This could be a good opportunity for us to see what the Mikaelsons are really up to, because where there's one there's usually more of them not far behind.” Now she's really confused. “Guys what's going on, who are the Mikaelsons?” she examines the area around her slowly “How did I get in the kitchen?” Damon rolls his eyes and compels her again. “You won't remember any of this, sit. '' he points to the couch in the living room. Nova has no other choice but to walk over to the and sit down. She tries her best to follow their conversation.
“Elena we cant send her to spy on those maniacs, I thought you wanted to keep her as far away from them as possible .” She can see Stefan start to pace around the kitchen “Stefan trust me, I know how it sounds.” “I don't think you do Elena, haven't we spent the last oh I don't know SIX YEARS  protecting her from our kind and our world, and now you just want to throw her in head first?”  Elena shifts from one food to the other “Not head first Stefan, she doesn't even have to know what they are or who they are, just compel her to ask him questions about his life, family, plans, anything, then she’ll come home everyday and report back to us.”  Stefan stops and whips around to face Elena “Elena she isnt a toy, and she certainly is not a soldier, and what if she’s lying what if Finn did hurt her and she doesn't know.” She throws her arms up “We don't know what happened Stefan, she’s clumsy ok, I believe her when she said she tripped...” She zoned out for a few seconds after that , Damon said in the car he thought Mr. Mikaelson hurt her when Alaric first called them. Is that what they thought she was ‘lying about’, did they really think he hurt her, and did they really think she was lying to them about it.
“Stefan she’ll be fine, sparkys oblivious but shes not stupid, she can handle herself.” he shakes his head  “Well I for one dont like this, we might as well give her a death sentence.” Stefan practically slaps his face and drags his hands down it at Elena's reply. “It's not a death sentence, she'll be fine if you compel her!” he cocks his head to the side and holds his hands up “Hold on, did we not learn our lesson on messing with people's minds, Jeremy is a prime example for that, do you want to make her resent you too.” Elena stomps her foot and huffs like a child, “Damon you agree with me, don't you?” he shrugs “Yeah Elena I do, but not without precautions, sparky's one of the people in my life I can tolerate and I don't really want her to be another body in the ground.” She rolls her eyes ``Obviously we’ll make sure she's safe.” she retorted. Stefan pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs “Ok well, we should start now before sparky runs away because by the look on her face she's about to bolt.” Damon says with a chuckle. The three of them all turn to look at her and she takes an opportunity to analyze their faces. Stefans is full of concern and guilt, Damon looks indifferent, but he's hesitant she can tell, and Elena she looks ecstatic, happy, over the moon.
“It's ok you guys, this way we have a set in stone way for me to stay safe from Klaus if he comes back.” Stefan crosses his arms ``By what, throwing your sister into the danger we've worked so long keeping her from, I’m all for keeping you safe but exposing her to everything all at once without her even realizing, I don’t know Elena.” She throws her head back “Stefan she’s gonna find out sooner or later, this way she'll have an experience with the supernatural first hand, while being safe.” “Safe, how?” he bites back. She's' silent for a second before she snaps her fingers  ``Alaric, we can ask him to watch over her.`` Stefan drops his head in defeat “He has classes to teach, he can't look after Nova , he has other kids to look after and worry about as well.” pushing herself to sit on the counter Elena answers his concern “He’ll be fine Stefan, he can listen to her heart beat every once in a while if anything.” Stefan’s silent for a moment. “Little brother I dont think your gonna win this one.” Damon says with a smirk. He sighs “Fine.” he says “But we're gonna do this my way.”
Elena and Damon follow Stefan as he enters the living room. “Give me her bracelet.” startled she looks down to her wrist to see it bare ‘when did I lose it’ she thinks. Her head snaps to the right when she feels the couch diviet under someone's weight . “Nova, look at me.” turning to Stefan she furrowed her eyebrows ``Stefan, what are you guys talking about what going on?” he sighs and turns to Damon ``Don't look at me like that, if we're doing this your way, this is all you.”  Stefans hand snaps out quickly and grabs the bracelet from Damon's extended hand. He takes her wrist with his other hand and she flinches hard. He stops what he's doing and looks at her, he looks hurt. “Elena, wha-” Stefan then forcefully turns her head towards him “You will go to school tomorrow and everyday after that and gather any kind of information about Finn Mikaelson's life, anything and everything you hear you tell us when you get home.” She nods her head “I’ll tell you when I get home.” she repeats “None of this happened, you didn't hear anything, you came home you ate dinner with us, then you went to bed.” He steps away and waits for the compulsion to kick . Nova covers her mouth as she lets out a loud yawn. '`I'm pretty tired guys, I've had a horrible day.’ standing up all the bones her body snap and pop as she stretches “Good night Nov see you in the morning.” Elena gives her small waves as she passes.
Reaching the top of the stairs she looks up and sees her brother standing a few feet away from her,and he looks pissed. “Hey Jer.'' Jeremy whips around and grabs her arm lightly when she goes to pass him. “Hey, what did you guys talk about?” she blinks and shrugs “Nothing much, I got some medicine and ate dinner with them.” he nods, clicking his tongue “Nothing else?” she raises an eyebrow “Um… yeah that's all. '' he nods again “So what did they want to talk about? '
“What?” letting go of her arm Jeremy starts to scratch his elbow, something he always did when he was agitated. “It's nothing never mind goodnight.”  With that, he bolts past her and down the stairs, out of her vision. “Uh, night?” shrugging, she turns around and enters her room, closing the door with a soft click, finally ending her long, horrible day just to start another one in the morning.

Chapter 5
Nova was pissed, to put it shortly. She was ten minutes late to class because of Alaric. She didn't know when or how, but Mr. Mikaelson was already at the front of the class when she walked into the room. With this class being the last one of the days, it was usually used for reading, homework, etc. or talking to friends about schedules if the teacher was nice enough.  So, when she walked into the loud room, she figured he was the latter. More than a couple heads turned her way but none of them paid her any mind as she walked up to the teacher's desk. She had fully intended to get a late mark on her first day, so when she got to Mr. Mikaelsons desk to tell him she didn't have a late slip, all she got back was “That’s fine dear, I know you were talking with Mr. Saltzman, just pick a seat wherever and I’ll start attendance.” She gives him a tight-lipped smile and turns to scan the available seats in front of her. When she finally zeros in on the only open seat, she wants to rip her hair from her scalp. The only open seat left for her is one smack dab in the middle of the front row. Right in-between Rose Sampson and Arnold Copeland, the only desk in the room that sits directly in front of Mr. Mikaelsons desk. She couldn't even begin to explain the rage she was starting to feel.  It's like the universe was out to get her, for what reason she didn't know. First, she's ten minutes late for class because of Alaric, and the interrogation she seemingly just got, had already put her in a bad mood. Second, due to her being late she got the last pick for desks, hers just had to be in the middle of the front row. Third, she was sitting next to the two people she despised the most in her life besides her sister.
If Regina George and Sharpay Evans had a child together and Rachel Berry raised said child, that child would be Rose Sampson. Rose was the ‘popular girl’ in Mystic Falls High. After Caroline Forbes graduated the top spot was finally open for the taking, that spot just happened to be filled by Rose when she won Miss Mystic two years in a row. She had Bleached blonde hair with dark roots, and blue eyes that looked like they could stare into your soul. Rose was the type of girl to act innocent in front of a teacher but the second their back is turned they become the biggest bitchiest monster you’ll ever meet. There have been multiple occasions when she herself was subjected to her and her “friend” groups games''. Like the time they had shoved her so hard into the lockers, she got one of the biggest bloodiest nose bleeds she had ever had. Or the time when they tripped her down a flight of stairs and she broke her wrist. When her sister was called to come get her, it didn't take much convincing for Elena to believe she had just fallen off her board. Or the time they snapped said board over a fire hydrant then threw the remaining pisces into the local pond nearby, she had to tell Elena it had been stolen. Nova never told anybody about what happened because it happened to so many other kids too, it was virtually impossible to tell on the “good girl” of the school. It also did not help that her father was the principal of the school, most of the students and teachers alike were scared of Scott Sampson.
So to say she was feeling a little murderous at the moment was an understatement.  Having the guy who thinks he's in love with her and her bully sitting next to her for the rest of the year was the very last thing she wanted. Taking her seat in between the two she got very mixed reactions from both of them. Arnold's eyes widened and he sat up straighter and smiled, at least that's what she thought he was trying to do. His eyes were extremely wide, comically so. With the thick glasses he wore it made him look like a bug. His smile looked strained and forced almost.  Rose made a face akin to disgust and hate she scoffed and turned her head. “Hi Nova!” Arnold says in excitement. She does her best to ignore him. “Isn't it awesome we get to sit next to each other all year, how great is that!” A part of her wants to snap at him, yell at him to leave her alone, but she doesn't. Instead she grabbed her headphones from her bag and gave him a shrug she has full intent to put them on when Mr. Mikaelson's voice broke through her concentration. “Nova Gilbert?” he says filling out his attendance “Present” she says back and he continues on to the next student. Rose’s shrill voice cuts through his voice to pitch in “You know what Arnold I totally agree, I'm so glad we get to sit together this year Nova, what are the chances.”  Her tone is mocking, condescending, paired with an evil smile and a devilish glint to her eyes. “I'm so glad you agree, this year is going to be the best year ever!” Nova ignores them both connecting her headphones to her phone and tuning everything and everyone out. Trying her best not to stare at the teacher in front of her. School was definitely not going to be amazing this year.
The time could not have gone by any slower. As the minutes tick by, the knot in her stomach starts to tighten again. She just wants it to stop, it's just pissing her off at this point. Soon she can hear the students of the classroom over the noise of her music. She yanks her headphones from her head and whips around to see what the commotion is. She sees everyone packing their things up, getting ready for the bell to ring. Calming slightly she starts to do the same she zips her bag and throws it over her shoulder. Standing the second the bell starts to ring, she only walks a couple steps before her foot collides with something solid. For the second time that day she eats shit and falls to the ground, this time face first smashing her forehead into the corner of the teachers metal desk. She can hear the collective gasp of the classroom before a few snickers start to pop up here and there. “Oh god Nova, are you ok?” She can only partly understand Arnolds question. Sitting up she blinks a couple times, eyes adjusting from the sudden altercation. When she looks up she sees Rose smiling behind her hand fake concern laced in her voice, as she brings her extended leg back under her desk “Oh my God Nova are you ok?” All she wants to do is cry, nothing that had happened that day had gone her way, even before she left the house she was destined to have  a bad day.
She feels a hand on her right arm, and when she turns, she catches the alarmed face of Mr. Mikaelson “Honey are you alright?” before she gets to answer all the pain starts to come through all at once and she can feel the warm liquid running down her temple. Her answer is a simple groan as she brings her hand to her head. “Can you stand for me?” She hears Mr. Mikaelson ask. Very slowly she took his extended hand and he slowly raised her up “You should sit back down in your seat dear you might have concussion.” All she can do is follow his order and let him guide her to her seat. Everyone had left but a few people, some just wanted to make sure she was ok, Arnold of course stayed, and so did Rose and her gaggle of friends who all were half laughing, half straight faced trying not to blow their cover. “Mr.Mikaelson?” She spoke up,  pushing her chest forward, crossed her legs, and letting her skirt ride up on her thighs, even though a daze Nova couldn't believe the girl's audacity.  Her voice came out a high squeal in her ears. This was probably her way of trying to sound sexy. She didn't, she sounded like a dying chicken.”Yes, Ms Sampson?” “Do you want me to go get the nurse? I mean it's only fair she tripped over my backpack.” She says lying through her teeth. She flips her hair over her shoulder waiting for his answer. The one she gets is visibly not the one she wants. “First of all the desks are not meant to be sat on so please get off of it.” The look of shock on Rose's face makes her chuckle. She immediately regrets it as pain shoots through her head, she groans in response. Rose slides off the desk, and glares at Nova. Mr. Mikaelson turns to her and examines her forehead once more. Standing up he walks back to his desk  grabbing some tissues from the box on his desk. He turns and  addresses Rose again “Miss Sampson that would be a great idea please go fetch the nurse.” This was new. No teacher had the nerve to stand up to Rose. Rose looked surprised that he actually agreed with her, other teachers would have said something along the lines of “oh no need to worry your pretty little head someone else can do it.”  Rose walks out of the room with a pout on her lips and a glare fixated on her. Her head hurt so bad she didn't have the strength to care. “Nova, come on, I need you to stay awake.” Mr. Mikaelson tapped her arm a couple times to keep her grounded. She looked up at him and felt a slight pressure on her forehead, “Ooww, hey.” she whines.”Sorry.” he apologizes first “Yup, you definitely have a concussion.” he brings his hand away from  her forehead and she realizes he was wiping the blood off her forehead. He brings the tissues down from her head and walks to his desk to get some more when he stops in his tracks. With his back facing towards her she cant tell what he’s doing “Mr. Mikaelson?” he swiftly resumes his pace and throws the tissues away “Sorry, I get a bit weird around blood.” He grabs a couple more to replace the old ones and places them on the gash “Can you hold this here?” Reaching up slowly she grabs the tissues from him. She completely misses the tissues  and grabs the tips of his fingers instead. ‘Their freezing’ is all she thinks before he pulls his hands out from under hers to push himself to stand.
When the nurse, a brunette woman named Molly Pattson, finally burst through the doors wheeling something in front of her, she looked a little panicked. Rose walks in behind her with a sinister smile on her face. When she finally focuses on what the nurse has in front of her she realizes it's a wheelchair. “You have got to be kidding me.” she says under her breath. Mr. Mikaelson chuckled before walking over to the nurse and explaining the situation to her. Soon she was transferred from her desk to the wheel chair all the while keeping pressure on the gash on her forehead.  As Nova was being rolled down the halls she couldn't be happier that school was over. All the kids that had stayed had eventually left when she was wheeled out of the classroom. Mr. Mikaelson had to kindly force Arnold to the buses and Rose squawked a goodbye at her “Hope you get better, ok?” she giggles and wiggles her fingers at Mr. Miklaelson. He didn't seem to pay her any attention and focused on getting her to the nurses office. “Goodbye Mr. Mikaelson, see you tomorrow.” he spares her a glance and a brief smile “Have a good day Ms. Sampson.” Her lips turn into a sultry smile as she winks. She finally turns around and skips off to the buses leaving just her, Mr. Mikaelson and Ms. Pattson behind.  Mr. Mikaelson was walking beside her as the nurse pushed her. Ms.Pattson kept asking her various questions to keep her aware of her surroundings. She vaguely remembers being wheeled into the nurses room and transferred to one of the beds. As she lies there she can feel the tissues be removed from her head and be replaced by a damp washcloth. She shuffles in her spot and heaves a sigh, she looks to her left as she  feels the end of her cot dip. “Are you ok hun?”  Ms. Pattson asks, stroking her leg waiting for her answer. “I feel ok,   my head hurts,     alot.” she said, pausing slightly in between each answer. “I bet.” the nurse chuckled “The good news is you wont need stitches or a trip to the ER.”   Nova feels herself deflate a little, letting go of the air she didn't realize she was holding. She was glad she didn't have to go to the ER; she just wasn't ready to hear the bad news. “And the bad news?” she asked “Well it's not bad new per say its just going to leave a tiny scar on your forehead, and you have a mild concussion.'' She's glad that's all  that happened. “Oh, ok that's better than getting stitches I guess.” she says with a giggle. “Yes I guess it is.” The nurse gives her one last pat on the knee before standing up to check her head again. She removes the wash cloth and starts to clean and bandage her head. Once she was done she let her know that Elena had been contacted and would be on her way. Dread filled her bones and it made them ache. She didn't want to deal with Elena, all she would do is complain about how clumsy she was, and yell at her for messing up everyone else's day. “Where’s Mr.Mikaelson?” Nova asked. The nurse lets out a bark of laughter. “He looked a little green, I think blood may freak him out a little, he left as soon as he knew you would be ok.”  She smiles and hands Nova an ice pack. “Here keep this on your head.” The rest of her time was spent laying in the cot waiting for her sister to eventually arrive.
She thinks about ten minutes go by before she can hear an exchange between the nurse and someone, who she assumes is her sister. She waits a little longer expecting to hear her sister walk into the room but after a few minutes of silence she’s assuming it wasn't her . She finally decided  to check with the nurse herself. Sitting up she had to fight off some dizziness and pain before she stood up and made her way towards the door. Standing in the doorway she sees the nurse sitting in her chair and Alaric standing a few feet away right in front of the printer. Her mind puts two and two together and realizes the person she heard conversing with the nurse earlier was him.
She was conflicted; she didn't know if she should go lay back down and wait for Alaric to leave or talk to the Nurse now and Alert him of her presence. Unfortunately she didn't get to make that decision for herself, Alaric had finished up what he was doing and was turning to leave when he spotted her. He smiled at her at first before he noticed the bandage on her head and remembered the fact that it was after school hours. “Nova? What on earth happened? Are you ok?” He questioned. The nurse turns and quickly stands from her chair ushering her back to her cot. “Honey you shouldnt be up and about you need rest.” she gives a sheepish smile “Sorry I just wanted to ask when my sister will be here.” The Nurse stands back up and looks at the clock “She said in about fifteen to thirty minutes.” Nova let out a huf of laughter, she thought it was funny, they didn't live more than ten minutes away from school. “Ok, thank you.” the nurse turns to leave and is met with a very distraught Alaric “Is she ok? What happened? How did this happen?” The nurse puts her hands up and tries to calm him “She’s perfectly fine Mr. Saltzman. She has a mild concussion and a small gash on her head but otherwise she’s as fit as a fiddle.”  Alaric can't believe what he’s hearing. “That doesn't really sound fine to me Molly.” He retorts back. “Well how about you go to school for a medical degree in nursing then come back to me and tell me if she’s not going to be ok, she’ll live Alaric.” she says. She walked around him and out the door back to her desk to continue whatever they had interrupted her from.
The second she was out of the room Alaric had sat down on the cot next to her. “How did this happen? Are you ok?” letting out a yawn as she nods her head as much as it will allow. “I’m ok, I’m just clumsy.” she laughs. He’s not buying it or laughing. “What happened Nov?” he asks again in a softer voice.  She laughs once again “When I was getting ready to leave I tripped over someone's backpack and slammed my head on the corner of Mr. Mikaelson’s desk.”  The explanation gave the opposite effect she wanted. Instead of calming him, he became frantic, just like this morning. “Nova, are you sure that's what happened?” She had no clue where all this suspicion was suddenly coming from; she just wanted to be left alone. “Yes, Alaric I’m pretty sure I would know how I gave myself an injury:”  He doesn't say much after that, just a few questions mainly about when Elena would be arriving. Relaying the same information she was given by the nurse Alaric decided he was going to stay and wait for Elena to show up.
Another ten minutes go by, and she still isn't there.  Nova isn't too surprised it's not the first time Elena had ignored her needs for her own. Alaric on the other hand seemed to be having a meltdown that she wasn't there yet. With all the fidgeting and pacing Alaric finally decided to call Elena himself. He stood up and excused himself from the room. It only took two rings before she picks up, he starts the conversation immediately asking where she is and that's all she can hear before he walks away from earshot. She can only hear bits and piece of their conversation
“Elena this could be bad”
“I don't know”
“I thought Finn and Klaus”
“She’s ok”
“Maybe”
“You need to get here now”
“I’ll talk to her”
When he walks back into the open, she has to pretend she wasn't listening, so she holds the ice pack to her head and slings her arms over her eyes. “Hey Nova?”  she hears him ask “What’s up?” she says as she sits up once again to face him. “Well first Elena’s going to be here in five minutes.” She takes a deep breath and nods her head. “Ok.”” Second, I think you should switch homeroom teachers.” She couldn't believe what she was hearing. “What, why?’ she asked, her eyebrows furrowed, and she scoffed at the suggestion. “I just think it's in your best interest, I just don't think you're safe.” she was floored, astounded she couldn't even speak.  “Safe.” she repeats “Yes, the man that teaches your class only brings bad luck, he’s a bad man Nova you need to stay away from him.” she blinks, once. Twice, and once more before she burst out laughing, “Are you kidding me? Are you going to tell me someone is a bad person because I happened to hurt myself in their classroom?” “No Nova I know this man, I've met him before he’s bad, you need to stay away.” At this point her head was pounding; everything that was going on was making her head spin. Alaric suddenly grabbed her wrist and took off the bracelet around it. She had received the bracelet from Stefan as a Christmas gift three years ago, he told her she was to never take it off no matter what, she thought the request was funny, so she humored him and wore it all the time. Soon it just became a part of her everyday life, and she never went anywhere without it. So, when Alaric yanked it from her wrist, she was starting to get extremely angry. “What the hell-” “Look at me.” he says looking into her eyes. She does what she’s told and waits for his explanation to his sudden rudeness. “You think changing classes is a great idea, it’s the only thing you want to do.” He lets go of her arms and places her bracelet back on her wrist and takes a step back. “Maybe you're right, it does seem like a good idea,'' she says. She lays back down and places the ice pack on her head once more. “Maybe there's something we can do later.” she yawns trying to keep her eyes open. “Yeah.” he replies, taking a deep breath and cursing the fact that Elena has not been there sooner.

                                                   Chapter 4
Nova was internally grateful for the free period she was given this year. When she first saw the option on her electives, she wrote it down immediately. When she thought back on it, she was very lucky to have gotten one of the spots. She could only imagine the number of students who applied for a free period this year, but only students who have had good grades for four semesters in a row could apply for the class. It didn't stop everyone from still applying for the class regardless of their grades. She could at least thank her parents for some things, if they had not always pressured her about getting good grades, she wouldn't be an a-b honor roll student for her entire life. She wished she had the ability to not care like her brother, he would forget if there was a deadly snake two feet behind him if nobody would remind him. It astounded her to no end how someone as sharp and witty as him, would choose to be stupid just because it was easier to do than anything else. As she was milling about the halls thinking about everything and nothing, she rounded the corner hallway leading to the lunchroom when she heard her phone ring. She waits for it to happen again, but it doesn't so she figures it was a text from Jeremy or Elena probably to check up on her. When she reaches the lunchroom, she takes a seat at the table closest to the door and retrieves her phone from her bag. Reading her messages, she was surprised to see a text not from not her siblings but from Alaric. Smiling to herself she opens the messages and starts to read them.
Lifetime Comedian: Hey red.
Lifetime Comedian: Where are you right now?
Red: i'm in the cafeteria
Red:why do you ask?
Lifetime Comedian: Don't go anywhere
Lifetime Comedian: I need to talk to you
Lifetime Comedian:Ok?
Red: sure?
Nova looked up from her phone confused turning to look around her, not seeing him as she thought she would, so she waited as instructed. After about ten minutes go by, she gives up on waiting for him and starts to wander about some more, not wanting to waste her free time. She decides she’ll walk by Alaric's room and see what he's up to in the meantime.
After what feels like forever, she reaches Alaric's room and peaks through the little window, not seeing him or anybody else in the room, she figures he’s already gone to the cafeteria to see her. Throwing her head back in defeat, she trudges back towards the cafeteria to find him. On her way to the lunchroom, she pauses in front of the gymnasium doors. She wasn't trying to go here, but the second she saw the doors she wanted to see and check out the new gym teacher again. She looks to her left then to her right and jogs towards the doors. She stands there for a few seconds and when her brain catches up with her body, she hears a voice that is strangely helping to loosen the knot living in her stomach. She can hear Mr. Mikaelson calling out students’ names just the same as he was for her class. She just knew she wanted to hear more of his voice even if it wasn't in a one-on-one conversation. She shakes her head at herself, ducking her head and squeezing into the small little alcove created under the bleachers, moving to the middle area of the cove she lays down on her back, thankful for the gym mats under the bleachers. She probably would not willingly choose to sit on the dirty nasty gym floor, let alone lay on it if they weren’t there. Laying under the bleachers listening to Mr. Mikaelson's talk was not how she thought she would be spending her free period. The longer she stayed there the more her eyes started to droop, slowly being lulled to sleep by the new man's voice.
Her eyes pop open in alarm as her head rattles with the shrill sound of the bell. She sits up, gathering all her belongings as quickly as she can. Ignoring the spinning in her head from the speed of her reaction. Grabbing her phone, she quickly turns it on, she has five new messages from Alaric.
Lifetime Comedian: Hey i’m here where are you.
Lifetime Comedian: I told you to stay put
Lifetime Comedian: Where are you?
Lifetime Comedian: Are you ok?
Lifetime Comedian: Please answer me.
Each text comes with a slight variation of worry embedded in it. As she skims through the messages, she moves her way through the alcove trying not to trip over all the mats. When she emerges from her hideaway, she runs into what feels like a brick wall, falling back on her ass in the most ungraceful way possible she blocks her face with her arm as everything from her unzipped backpack flew through the air, papers going everywhere, pencils and books falling with a loud thud on the floor in front of her. She’s frozen on the floor and the humiliation hits her like a freight train. When she looks up and sees Mr. Mikaelson standing there with a semi-alarmed look on his face, her embarrassment doubles by a hundred. Subconsciously she starts to apologize “Oh god, I’m so sorry Mr. Mikaelson are you ok?” Bending over he laughs and starts to collect her belongings “No my dear it’s ok, I myself was not paying attention.” he says  “I was not expecting to find someone back here.” His words are teasing and light. He continues to pick up her things as she sits there staring at him.  When she finally starts to move, he already has half of her things in her bag already. Slowly she starts to gather the things that are left, stacking them back into their respective folders. He hands her, her bag with a little smirk, and for the first time in Nova’s life, it’s a smirk she doesn't instantly hate. “Thank you, sir, I’m so sorry.” She shoves her folders and books back into her bag and zips it up, slinging it over her shoulder. She apologizes once more and moves around him before he speaks up again. “I think you will need this dear.”  turning back around she takes a deep breath when she sees the object in question, her phone “Oh, goodness my sister would have killed me if I lost that, thank you.” she takes it from his hands when he replies, “It's not a problem.” Standing there for a few more awkward seconds he speaks once more “Well don't want to be late for class now do we, can I walk you? I haven't really got any late slips to give you.”  The knot that made her stomach a home, seemed to slowly disperse the longer she talked to him. “Um, you're actually my homeroom teacher. I'm going to your classroom.” His face lit up in what she can only describe as a masked curiosity. “Well, shall we?” throwing her a small smile he starts to walk away, and she can't do anything else but follow.
The walk there was relatively quiet, it wasn't awkward, and she was thankful for that much. She took the opportunity to sneak in looks here and there and he was even more stunning up close. He had a distinct aura to him, he was calm, collected, calculating anything and everything around him. He smelled of maple syrup with a hint of jasmine and fresh dirt, a concoction that made her feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. Nova decided to take the opportunity to try and ask him some questions about himself, ‘what harm could it do?’ she thought “So…is this your first-year teaching?”  his answer is short and blunt, and it catches her attention. “No, I’ve taught before.” walking a few more paces she decides to try again “So.. why here? I'm sure there are WAY better towns and schools to teach at.`` this question gets more of a response from him. He chuckles “Yes perhaps, but I have family that lives here so I thought I’d move back and find a teaching job at the closest school. Mystic Falls High just happens to be the one.” Finishing his sentence with a shrug he starts looking around him, down the hall, in the classroom windows, behind them. It was freaking her out a little. “Your Name’s Nova right? You're in my fourth period gym class.” she smiles slinging her backpack from one shoulder to the other exposing her shoulder closet to him before answering “Yes, sir thats me.” he nods his head. After a short pause she notices that he keeps looking back and forth from her exposed shoulder to the wall next to him. He suddenly stops and clears his throat “Fuck.” He said underneath his breath. Regardless of whether he wanted her to hear it or not, it didn't matter because she did. “Are you ok Mr. Mikaelson?” Frantically nodding his head he clears his throat again. When she goes to take a step towards him he takes a step back. His eyes become dark when he does, it worries her maybe he’s getting sick? “Yes I.. uh, forgot something, you should head to class, I will catch up.”  Before she has a chance to say a thing she hears someone shout from behind them.
“Hey!” her eyes flicker over to the voice and she sees Alaric jogging towards them in a hurried manner. “Nova what are you doing!” The harshness in his voice and the use of her first name throws her. “I’m going to class?” she answers Alaric puts both hands on her shoulders, dropping his head, trying to catch his breath. “I needed to talk to you red, you should have stayed put.” Shrugging his arms off her, she lightly punches his arm. “Can’t it wait till after school?”  Shaking his head he sighs again “No.’ is all she gets back. Remembering her original course of action she turned to talk to her teacher “Mr. Mikaelson wha- oh.” She's only met with empty space instead of the man in question. When she turned back to Alaric his expression was one she couldn't read. He looks angry, annoyed, curious, and most of all scared. “What are you talking about in Nova?” She doesn't ignore the fact that he keeps using her first name. He only ever does it when he’s being serious. “Why does it matter to you, trying to scare off potential boyfriends?” she teases.  “No Nova, I’m not. I need to know who you were just with!” Now he’s raising his voice. Nova doesn't like it when anybody raises their voice even if she isn't the one being yelled at, she will cry either way. Tears start to well in her eyes “My teacher, I was walking with my teacher for fucks sake Alaric.” “Language.” he retorts. “Which teacher?” “Really, is this so important to make me late for class?” “I’ll give you a late slip, now answer my question which teacher?” throwing her hands in the air she answers as they fall back down to her side “The new gym Teacher Alaric, he’s my homeroom teacher too so he was walking with me to class.” he crosses his arms ``Yeah, cool that doesn't really answer my question what’s his name?” “Mikaelson,” she repeats bluntly fed up with this already. Alaric stops, and his eyes widen a little. “What's his first name?” “Really man why are you interrogating me?” she pulls her bag off her shoulder, dropping to the ground she grabs one of her folders and pulls her schedule out for him to look at “Here, if your so interested.” He immediately takes it scanning for the teacher in question. When he seemingly finds the name on the paper he looks puzzled. “Oh.” he says furrowing his eyebrows as he looks at the paper a little longer. “Oh?” she repeats back “It’s nothing, I just thought- never mind.” he reaches his hand into his back pocket taking her folded late slip and hands it to her. She stands there and stares at him incredulously. Scoffing and rolling her eyes she snatches the paper with force trying to convey her frustration.. “Thanks.” is all she says as she shoulders past him and down the hall. “Sorry.” she hears him call after her. Instead of answering she just flips him the bird and continues her walk down to class.

Nova’s Semester
So I actually haven't finished the vampire diaries because Netflix got so expensive lol I got to about the 8th episode of season 4 so I’m sure some of the things I say aren't going to be accurate in the show, so I just wanted you, readers, to know that this doesn’t really follow the timelines. Also, nova doesn't know about the vampires or anything of the sort, she's a little clueless. Grammar mistakes were made.

                                            Chapter 3
Nova is practically sprinting to her first class, looking between her schedule and the halls to make sure she didn't run into somebody. ‘First period, first period’ she said over and over in her mind looking back down at the paper she slows to a slight jog so she can see the paper better.

Nova only has enough time to process the first couple of classes before shoving the paper into her bag and rounding the corner to room 104. As she walks up to the door her nerves are running haywire and she feels like she's about to explode. She opens the door and steps inside and is immediately stared at by everyone in the room. She can start to feel the room close around her, until she hears a familiar voice, one that brings her immediate comfort. “Hello, may I help you?” When she looked up to put the man to the voice, she's internally grateful he isn't being anything but her teacher at the moment. Alaric Saltzman was another person she held dear. Alaric helped her through losing her Aunt Jenna as her death also hit him hard as well. When Nova heard she had died in a car accident just like her parents she was numb, she lost another family member to a car accident, and it hurt. She could only imagine the pain Alaric went through when she died. So, she was grateful for him and everything he had done for her. Nova lowers her head trying to cave into herself to try and make herself smaller. She walks up to his desk and hands him her late slip, he takes it from her and takes the opportunity to lean over to whisper in her ear “You, ok?” She rises up a little to give him a nod, he gives one back, and leaning back up he talks to her as a normal student. “Alright, there's an open seat in the back row or one in the front if you prefer, please choose one and we'll get started.”  She sent him a grateful look and walked to the seat at the back of the class. “Alrighty then, hello everybody I'm sure you know who I am, at least you should already because I’ve been teaching some of you since freshman year.” The class erupted into a bunch of giggles and snorts. As Alaric Continues on through the introductory lesson, she opens her bag to get everything she needs, her crumpled schedule falling out of her backpack and onto the floor. The boy next to her noticed this and picked it up handing it back to her “Hey I think you dropped this.'' The boy said. She looked up to see who was speaking to her and she instantly screamed at herself. The boy was none other than Arnold Copeland, a boy who she knew well, and she wished she didn't. “Oh, thanks.” She snatches the paper from him, smoothing it out on the desk as Arnold speaks up “It looks like we have the same lunch.” he says with a smile she doesn't give one back “Yup, looks like it.” she replied. Arnold is a bit of an oddball; he wasn't popular by any means more on the nerd side of the school spectrum. The only bad thing about him, he swore up and down that she was the love of his life. This year was going to be her worst one yet.
By the time third period has rolled around she figures she’s going to have every class this year with Arnold just like every year since seventh grade, given by his and her last name. They're close in the alphabet and that just so happens to be the method used to create the students' classes, every single year. She doesn't know if she would be able to handle Arnold all year long, again. Arnold wasn't the worst-looking guy at the school, but he definitely wasn't the greatest-looking dude. He had sandy blonde hair worn in a pompadour cut, green bugged-out eyes, and the bulkiest glasses she had ever seen on a person. Nova had met Arnold in the seventh grade, at the time she didn't think anything of him, until one day he had asked her to the winter dance the school was throwing. She had to politely let him down telling him she wasn't going to the dance in the first place. Ever since then he tried to get her attention, like when he broke his arm in eighth grade trying to flip off the playground slide to impress her, but it didn't. She also remembers the time in sophomore year, she came to school on valentine’s day and a bunch of “letters” could visibly be seen hanging from the air gate at the top of her locker, when she opened her locker more fell at her feet. She was so embarrassed she remembered picking one up and opening it and immediately seeing Arnold’s face. It was a picture of him in a tuxedo, it was an oddly good picture of him, but it freaked her out to no end. She didn't even open the rest of the letters fearing what she might see, instead picked all of them up and threw them into the trash, and immediately went to find him. When she did she laid into him telling him that she didn't want to be his girlfriend like she had been trying to tell him since the seventh grade. She couldn't wait for the school day to end, and it was only the first day. When the bell rings signifying the end of class Nova all but runs out of the class giving a worried-looking Alaric a small wave.
Nova couldn't have done anything worse to herself than turning in her electives late because she got the only class, she didn't want this year, gym. She hated the entire walk to the gymnasium, she couldn't stand getting changed in front of people, choosing to always go to the bathroom stall to get some privacy. The fact that she also had a male gym teacher this year was annoying. She thought all male gym teachers were overactive and boisterous, they always had favorites, she couldn’t think of a single male gym teacher she had that didn't prefer a specific student over others. She enters the gym following the other gaggle of students and to her relief, the bleachers are pulled out far enough to fit a small class. She sees other students already sitting down in just their regular school clothes. She can at least give credit to whoever was teaching this class that the first day wasn't actually a gym day but an introduction day like everybody else. As she takes her seat, she decides to take out her schedule to see just who was teaching this year. She figured she would see the name Donny Hubbard the usual male gym teacher who taught there but next to the teacher information instead she saw a man named Finn Mikaelson. ‘Oh great” she thought, looking around the room she didn't seem to find the mystery man in question recognizing almost everyone on the bleachers. Her head snaps up as she hears the bell give its final warning ring for students to get to class. She then hears the sound of the gym office door squeaking as it's opened, and when her eyes land on the man that is Finn Mikaelson, she is taken aback.
He doesn't look anything like she thought he would, he is not old for one, and he doesn't have a beer gut or weird glasses. He looks refined, gentlemanly almost. As he continues to walk toward the middle of the room Nova can't help but admire the man. He had ashy brown hair with a shorter version of an ivy league haircut with the top swept over to the side. He was rather tall and intimidating, brutish almost, but it confused her. Mystic Falls was a pretty small town where everyone knew everybody, she would have definitely noticed someone like him. When he gets to the middle of the room, he clears his throat and gives a slight smile before he opens his mouth. “Good morning, everybody, how is everyone today?” There was a pause before various students answered at the same time in the same monotone voice, a variety of good, ok, and greats, can be heard before it goes silent again. She can only guess what everyone was thinking, probably the same thing she is, who is this guy? When her attention is brought back to him, he has seemingly pulled out a clipboard from thin air. “When I call your name just respond with an affirmation, please.”  When he starts listing off the names of students Nova lets her mind wander. He's most definitely educated, the way he speaks, the way walks, the way holds himself. His accent was most definitely not like anything she had heard before, like a British New Yorker. What kind of guy would become a gym teacher if he knew as much as she thought he did?
The closer he got to speaking her name the more she started to freak out. She just couldn't figure out why. When it was her turn, he looked back down at the paper and paused for a second too long for her liking, then continued on “Cassanova Gilbert?” Nova took a deep breath and coughed out “Here,” he looks up at her and it feels like he is staring straight into her soul his eyes are mesmerizing, a light hazy green color that made her feel hazy herself just looking at them. It made Nova question further just why this kind of guy was here teaching gym of all things. She thinks he'd be a better English teacher than a gym teacher just from what she's observed so far. He looks back down to his clipboard and scribbles in what she assumed was her attendance, he then asks another question. One he hadn't asked any of the other kids “That’s quite a long name Miss Gilbert do you have a nickname you'd rather go by?” all eyes turn to her, and she can’t help but shrink in on herself again because of it. “Um... N-Nova.` She wants to bury herself in a hole when she starts to stutter. He just turns back to his clipboard and scribbles the information down and moves on to the next student. It leaves her with a feeling akin to whiplash, she can't quite explain it. The rest of the gym time was spent as free time talking to friends and comparing schedules. All the kids already loved this teacher for just that decision alone. Nova just decided to grab her headphones from her bag and play some music to pass the time until her next period. About ten minutes before class ended, she decided to look at her schedule one more time to try and memorize it better. When she pulled it out, she was pleasantly surprised to see that Mr. Mikaelson happens to be her homeroom teacher as well, just her luck. After those ten minutes of class were finally done the bell gave its first ring for lunchtime. She wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.
The knot in her stomach decided to stay and make a home in her stomach and she felt like she was going to throw up. It was like feeling nauseous and having butterflies in your stomach at the same time, but either way, it made her uneasy. She decided she wasn't going to eat lunch, even if she tried, she was sure it might end up in the toilet bowl. So, when she left the gymnasium, she walked down a couple halls to her locker to grab her skateboard. She moved with every other student in AB lunch to get out to the courtyard as fast as she could. When the doors were opened, she was pushing herself through the crowd, getting complaints from the students she was shoving but she didn't care. As soon as she broke free from the group she sprinted to the pavement, probably looking like a maniac. She threw her board down as gently as she could at the speed she was going, having thrown it a little too hard it started to roll down the sidewalk. When she caught up to where it had rolled, she instantly was taking off from the school grounds to ride down to the park to try and get away from whatever she was feeling. She arrived at the park and checked the time on her phone. She had twenty minutes until she had to go back. Nova moves down the sidewalk towards the swings and stops herself right in front of the first one. Setting her board in the mulch a few feet from the swing of her choice> She jogged up to it and pulled herself up into the seat. Nova loved to swing even as a kid, it was so freeing being able to fly in the air at the speed of her choice, the height of her choice. Everything about swinging was about what she wanted, in her life she didn't get much of that with Elena breathing down her neck, with expectations the same as her parents did. Jeremy only ever paid attention to her if he wanted to piss her off or when she needed a supply of smoke, or he ran out and asked to share with her. So, she was a tad bit glad about it but sometimes she missed her brother, and he really couldn't care less. When she tried to hang out with him, he always had some sort of excuse to not go. ‘I can't have plans, sorry maybe later.’
 “I have homework?”
 “Really?”
“…yes?”
She stopped trying after that, figuring there was no point in forcing him. So to be able to be in control of something for once, she loved the feeling it gave her. She sat down on the swing she pulled her headphones from her neck to put them on, before she picks a song though, she sets an alarm for twenty minutes, then she chooses her favorite song, a new one called Back to December by Taylor Swift, she had played it nonstop since it came out
. When she gets done listening to her fifth song, she looks down at the time shown on the lit-up screen and almost keels over at it. Twelve thirty-five it read. She jumps off the swing in a hurry grabbing her board not even bothering to get on it knowing she would have to run in order to make it before class. The thing about running, even if it made her sweaty and smelly, she quite enjoyed the speed, the wind in her face, her hair whipping around it too. It took her three minutes to get to school and by the time she got there, she had one minute to get her board in her locker and get to class. This time though she doesn't have the luxury of a late slip, and just her luck Foreign Language was her next period. She had only ever heard bad things about the woman teaching the class. Everyone told her she was very mean, very demanding, bland, and ruthless. She did not want to get on the bad side of someone with that description. She sprints as fast as she can to her class, getting reprimanded by a teacher for running in the halls but she didn't care.
The second she throws open the door to her classroom the bell rings. The woman at the front of her class whips her head around to look at the culprit of the sudden intrusion with a wicked glare. Nova immediately apologized for being loud and late. The woman just gives her a nod, telling her to take her seat, the only one open is the single desk at the very back of the class, she couldn't be happier. “Hello class my name is Mrs. Allen welcome to foreign language.” Nova knew the second she introduced herself everyone was right. She was very bland and emotionless, condescending. Running her hands down her face she takes out her supplies and waits for the end of this endless torture called High School.

Nova’s Semester
I noticed none of my timing matches anything in the show because it's 2010 and Elena's 22 lol so for the sake of the timeline we'll just pretend Elena and Jeremy are adults.   Grammar mistakes were made, I'm sure.
Warning: swearing?, Mentions of weed Eventual: Elijah Mikaelson x OC, Niklaus Mikaelson x OC, Kol Mikaelson x OC, Rebekha Mikaelson x OC, Finn Mikaelson x OC Ending: Mikaelson Family x OC Words- 2695 Summary: Nova’s first day of school
                                                              Chapter 2
                                                            2 weeks later
August, 10 Dear Diary, Today is the first day of school. I feel horrible. I've turned in my electives, a bit late, but I still got them in. I might have kicked myself in the teeth with this though, I have no clue what classes I'm going to have this year, I don't even know if the classes I picked were available. Maybe Elena was right, I should have filled it out before they were due. The only class I hope I don't get is gym. I hate sweating, it's gross, and then not being able to take a shower afterward sucks ass. I guess I'm making a big deal over nothing, I guess I'm feeling a little off today. I don't know what it is, it's like a feeling in my gut. I don't think anything bad is going to happen, but I've never felt this way before on the first day of school. What should I do?
A light tapping can be heard from Nova’s door, she reluctantly gets up from her bed, putting her diary under her bed and throwing the pen somewhere on her bed to be lost within its sheets, she gets to her door finally opening it to reveal her sister. “Oh, good, you're up, you should start getting ready if you haven't already.” Nova lets out a big yawn giving a nod to her sister before closing the door. As she turns from her door a sense of dread starts to fill her. She stands at her door for a few more seconds before she slowly walks over to her closet throwing it open to fetch her outfit for the day. She decided to go with a simple white t-shirt with a plaid cover-up and some blue shorts. She rummages through her basket of shoes not liking any of her options. She looks to her right and sees her raggedy black and white converse. ‘Guess I'm wearing these all year again’ she thought to herself. After she got dressed, she started to finish the routine she's been doing since kindergarten. She made sure her teeth and hair were brushed, throwing her hair into a messy bun as she walked out of her bathroom and back into her room.
Nova moves about her room collecting everything she would need, her backpack filled with her notebooks and other school supplies, she grabs her purse, phone, headphones, and skateboard before turning off the lights, and moving downstairs and into the kitchen to grab some breakfast. When she walks into the kitchen, she's met face to face with Damon and Elena both sitting at the dining table with mugs in their hands. She pauses in the doorway looking between the two “Uh hi?” The pair at the table pause their conversation to turn their attention to her. “Good morning, to you too sparky, I see you've woken up on the right side of the bed,” Damon smirks and drinks the coffee from the mug in his hands. Instead of answering Damon, she turns to her sister with a puzzled look “Why aren't you at work? I thought you had an early morning shift today.” Nova moves about the kitchen waiting for an answer and the one she gets is not one she wants to hear. “I called off.” Nova stops pouring her juice into her glass and looks up at her sister. She ponders for a moment and comes to the conclusion Damon did something stupid and Elena was babysitting him, again. She snorts and replies “What did Damon do this time?” The man in question throws his hand over his heart and gasps “Sparky how could you, I thought we were friends?” Elena rolled her eyes and sighed “Damon didn't do anything Nova.” She brings her plate of food and glass of juice over to the table “So, why is he here at seven-thirty in the morning?” Damon threw his hands up in defeat “Really, I'm right here, fully capable of answering your question by the way.” Nova ignores him and waits for her sister to answer. “Because I told him I called off, and he showed up ten minutes later.” she shrugs and sips on her coffee “Well why did you call off in the first place.”
Elena looks to Damon and back to Nova, clears her throat “I’m taking you to school today, you know the first-day drive tradition.” Right. She forgot; it had completely slipped her mind. The first day drive picture tradition, something their parents had started when they were little. Elena was insistent every year to do this tradition. It was a simple tradition, let mom and dad drive them to school on the first day of every year for the first day of school picture. Nova didn't mind it even if she did hate having her picture taken because her parents always made the drive there so fun. When Elena wouldn't let it go, it made Nova hate the tradition completely. Nova lets out a noise of affirmation, to let her sister know she heard her, still in thought about all the times she and her parents carried out this silly little tradition. Today Nova decided she would have none of it. “Yeah, no thanks, you really shouldn't have called off work.” She stands from her seat taking her dishes to the sink. “What do you mean no, Nov we've always done this tradition.” Nova shrugged her shoulders moving towards the door, grabbing her board, and opening the door “Yup, but this year is different because we're not.” she steps out into the cool morning air takes a deep breath, and closed the door behind her.  At least she tried to close the door only to be intercepted by Damon's hand “Whoa sparky come on now what are doing.” Nova continues down the stairs of her front porch choosing to ignore Damon. As soon as her feet hit the pavement of the road, she slams her board to the ground taking off as fast as she can trying to get far away from the two people calling her name from behind her.
As Nova skates down the road, she looks around her to admire the beauty of the changing leaves, even if Nova hated the school year, she could at least admit fall was by far the prettiest season. Nova continued to stroll down the road towards school, contemplating how much trouble she would get if she just didn't go. She thought about just riding to her best smoking spot. It was a small little area behind the old Lockwood estate. Past all the trees and underbrush there was a small clearing big enough to fit a small group of people; the opening stretched up to the very top of the trees giving her an amazing view of the sky no matter the time of day. Her idea to cut school was severed when she heard the loud honk of a car behind her. She slows herself to a stop hopping off her board, picking it up, and moving over to the sidewalk to get out of the car's way. She places her board back down on the ground and takes off moving towards a familiar stop sign. All she needed to do was turn left and she could forget about school and everything else that goes with it. Instead, as soon as she hopped off her board to get over the crack in the sidewalk a hand reached down and grabbed her board from her “Hey, who the hell-?” her question stops abruptly when she looks up to the stranger grabbing her board only to not be met with a stranger but Damon.
Damon takes her board and holds it to his chest, swaying it side to side to taunt her. “Hey douchebag, give it back.” Damon chuckles and shakes his head “No can do sparky, not until you talk to your sister.” Damon finishes pointing to who she guessed was Elena behind her. “Come on Nov don't be this way.” Nova spins around to face her sister “Are you seriously going to make me late just because you want some stupid photo.” Elena huffs and throws her head back stomping her foot like a child “Nova common we've done this every year since kindergarten, please for me?” “Elena I'm not going to be late for school just because you want to take a fucking photo.'' She turns around with full intent to yell at Damon to give her, her board back only to be met with nothing. She hears the sound of a trunk door closing and she spins back around to see Damon walking back to the both of them with a smirk on his face. The more time ticks by the more annoyed she becomes, “Are you fucking kidding me?” Damon just slings an arm over Elena’s shoulders leaning his side into hers ``Hey I'm just following orders sparky.” Nova looks between the two of them “I don't give a shit Damon; give me my fucking board you have no right to take it even if you're just “following orders''.” She makes quotation marks with her hand to try and convey her annoyance to the two. “Nov come on please?” Elena tries to give her the same old airy smile added with her famous ‘puppy eyes’, it makes Nova sick. Nova throws her head back and lets out a groan “Fucking fine, but we're taking the picture here and you’re only getting one.”  Elena slumps her shoulders ``Nov- ``'' Come one sparky that isn't fair.” Nova just shrugs her shoulders dramatically and drops them to her side with a thud. “Fair for who, Elena or me?” Damon goes to answer but Elena beats him to it “Fine, Damon go get my phone please.” The man gives a mock salute before walking back to the car to retrieve the item.
Elena and Nova stand there in silence for a few seconds before Elena lets out a sigh “Why was it so hard for you to just let me take a picture of you?” the tone in her voice instantly set her off “Um, because as my older sister I expected you to listen to me when I tell you no, but it's all about what Elena wants right?” “Now it's not like that, you know mom and dad would want you to do this even if they aren't here.”  Novas was dumbfounded for a moment not knowing what to say her sister had never used their parents against her before, never. Nova could not convey the words; she just couldn't explain how hard that jab hit her. “Here you go, my lady.” Damon gives a dramatic bow as he places her phone into her hands, probably having heard the entire conversation. Nova doesn't have the energy to get into a catfight with her sister, so she just stands and smiles for the picture. As soon as the flash goes away Nova is storming towards the car, opening the back door and turning to look at the two. “You've already made me late, the least you can do is drive me, isn't that what you wanted?” she doesn't wait for a reply as she gets in and shuts the door behind her.
When they finally pull up to the curb of the sidewalk that sits in front of the school, Nova immediately gets out of the car, slamming the car door shut behind her, cringing at the volume it created. Nova doesn't want to even talk to her sister or Damon so she just pounds her fist on the trunk of the car a couple of times, hoping Damon would get the hint. Fortunately for her, he did, he pops the truck to the car so she can grab her board, and as soon as she does, she's on the sidewalk taking off. “Nova!” she hears her sister exclaim from behind, she slows herself to a stop and looks back. Her sister is leaning out of the window of the car waving “Have a good day!” Nova raises her hand, acknowledging her sister's words before starting back up on her board and taking off towards the school entrance, the knot in her stomach only worsening.
The closer she got to the entrance of the building the more she was slowed down due to the crowd of people in front of her, even if she was a little late, she wasn't the only one. She hops off her board, kicking it up into her hands as she enters the familiar red building, going past the cafeteria and gym entrance, heading straight into the office doors, and up to the receptionist's desk. The little lady sitting behind the desk in front of her happened to be one of Nova’s favorite people.
The old woman's name was Barb Booker, she had short curly gray hair with long white streaks on the sides. She always wore a hand-knit sweater no matter the temperature, and whatever color skirt she got to match. The only thing Nova liked about school was getting to say hello to Barb every morning. “Good morning, Barb, how are you this fine lovely morning?” Barb raises her head from her computer with a big smile on her face “Oh hello dear I'm doing amazing, it's so good to see you!” Nova giggles at the women's enthusiasm for the start of the new year. “How are you dearie, haven't seen you in quite some time.'' The twang of Barb's accent loosens the knot that had seemingly made a home in her stomach. “I'm doing alright Barb, just here to pick up my schedule.” at the mention of her purpose for her visit, she instantly got a playful glare from Barb ``Turning in elective three weeks late huh, what did you do fall in a rabbit hole?” Nova lets out a bark of laughter much louder than she anticipated because all heads turned to her and Barb. She sheepishly apologizes and turns back to her. “I guess, I had lots of cleaning to do this summer, got distracted, and forgot.” Barb pushes herself out of her chair to grab all the right documents for her, from the desk behind her. As she sits back down, she hands Nova the papers and a pen, “How is life going on at home?” Nova pauses for a second before continuing her signature “Uh, pretty much the same since the last time we talked.” Barb was the only one who knew how demanding and selfish Elena could be. The reason was Nova talked to and confided in her when her sister was being that way. “So, I'm assuming your elective was late because Elena made you clean?” instead of answering she just lets out a long sigh. Barb shakes her head as she hands the pen back to her. “Sweetpea you're eighteen now, have you thought about getting your own place?” she shrugs her shoulders “Sometimes, I don't have the funds to do that at the moment, and where would I go anyway Mystic Falls is a pretty small-town last time I checked” Barb was in the middle of her next sentence when the bell suddenly rang. Both of them jumped from the sudden interruption “Oh dear, I'm making you late, here.” Barb reaches over to grab an orange slip from a cubby next to her, a late slip for class she assumes. She hands the slip to Nova with a smile “You’ll come to see me later alright dear?” “Yes ma’am.” Nova smiles at her and turns to the door, opening it and moving down the hall to her first class of the senior year.

Summery: A glimpse into Nova’s life.
                                               Prologue
Her heart burned for him; it was unlike anything she had ever felt before. This feeling trumped all others she decided. Her stomach was fluttering, she felt weightless and free but how could she do this when she felt so guilty at the same time? Her heart did not only beat for one, but for all. The delicate way in which they treated her like she was the most beautiful thing in the world. Like a piece of art hanging up in a museum that could have been painted by Da Vinci himself. Never in her life has she ever felt so loved, happy, and even special, yet guilty and heartbroken at the same time. She couldn't do this to him. To any of them.
                                    Chapter 1
In the tiny town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, the summer of 2010 was drawing to a close. The school year was just around the corner, and the leaves had started turning a variety of colors from bright green to dark red. Most people welcome the change of seasons. Fall brought cold nights spent sipping pumpkin spiced lattes. Kids running from door to door begging for candy in costumes. Unlike those people, Nova Gilbert wasn't one of them. Nova didn't like fall for one reason and one reason only, school. Nova was no teacher's pet. In class, Nova Gilbert preferred to sit at the back, trying to remain unnoticed day to day. Nova could always be seen on a skateboard rocking a pair of worn-out converses, and bulky white headphones over her fiery red hair. This was more often than not thrown into a messy bun or ponytail, her bright green eyes looking everywhere but at another person.
She loved everything else about fall, but school meant being stuck and caged for 8 hours in the same place with the same smelly people. Nova is 18 years old and starting her last year of high school next week. To say she was dreading it was an understatement. Nova knew school was nothing more than a system to create the perfect 9 to 5 workers, who obeyed everything they were told without question. Nova hated it. She felt caged like an animal being herded to slaughter, with no choice but to follow, even as dramatic as it sounds. If it were up to her, she would have dropped out the second her parents died in a crash when she was thirteen. After they died, all care and sensibility flew out the window. Nova wasn't one to do anything crazy because of her parents' constant pressure to be flawless. When she got over their deaths, she couldn't begin to describe the feeling of freedom for the first time in her life. She also decided she was determined to live her life as freely as she could.
It's one of the reasons for the predicament she's in right now. Filling out electives three weeks after they were due. Nova didn't care in the slightest about her classes this year. In any case, her sister Elena threw a sissy fit when she realized she had been putting off something so crucial. So here she was sitting at the dinner table, being scolded by her sister like she was a child. "Nova, do I really have to baby you? You're eighteen now, and you should be responsible enough to do things without being told to do so, especially with things as serious as this!" Nova’s eyes briefly traveled to her sister and then back down to the paper where it lay in front of her “I'm doing it now aren't I?” she continues to fill out a couple more spaces before Elena answers her retort. “Things with a due date should be done before the due date Nova.” she paused and rolled her eyes before sighing under her breath “That’s what due dates are for in the first place.”
Nova chooses to ignore the jab, instead turning her focus on filling the paper up with whatever electives were left. Nova can hear her sister shuffle about the kitchen behind her before she sees her appear in her peripheral vision. “So tell me, why are you only now choosing your electives?" Her voice was filled with a mixture of anger and disappointment. Nova couldn't care less either way. “Um, because I forgot?” The lackluster answer she gives is one she uses often with Elena, even though ninety-nine percent of the time it does not work, anyway. “You forgot?” Nova huffs a breath of air and rolls her eyes. "Yes, Elena, I overlooked it. What do you want me to say?” Elena scoffs and turns around back to the kitchen “I'm sorry Elena, I fucked up AGAIN Elena.” She doesn't look up knowing that it's wiser to let her sister just rant than to talk back and defend herself.” You know, I wish you would start taking responsibility for when you mess up, you're not a kid anymore." At this point, Nova just tuned her out for as long as Elena would tolerate. Before Elena gets a chance to speak again the doorbell rings and a faint knock is heard at the door. “I'll get it, just finish your paper,” Elena grumbled as she walked past Nova as if she was planning to move from her seat in the first place.
Nova can hear a small shuffle from behind her before a heavy hand is placed on her head and starts to bat her head around like a ball. At first, Nova thought it was one of the quests at the door and she got extremely annoyed but soon the laughter of Nova's older brother Jeremy can be heard behind her “Cut it out dude, I'm working on something.” Jeremy continued to giggle as his hand slid off her head and back down to his side. “Sorry kid, you just make it too easy.” Jeremy, Nova's older brother; he’s two years older than Nova. So as her eldest annoying brother, he decided he would always pick on Nova no matter what she was doing, anywhere, anytime. Like any other big brother would. Jeremy was your typical stoner of the family. He had short, mocha-brown hair that he wore in a short, cropped cut close to his head. He wasn't skinny by any means, but he wasn't ripped either, a nice medium to go with his height of 6ft. He had dark hickory brown eyes that matched well with his hair and stature.
All these things are also attributed to the number of “followers” he had, as Nova liked to call them. Well, what do you call a bunch of men and women who are in love with your brother? It wasn't just her brother though. Her entire life she had to deal with men and women alike coming up to her to ask about her sister as well. Whether she is single, talking to someone, or just how she's doing in general, she will usually just give the same answer over and over again “If you want to talk to Elena/Jeremy please talk to them. I'm not a messenger girl.”
Elena and Nova had a difficult relationship, to say the least. Elena’s gaggle of followers was even broader than her brothers', but who could blame them? Elena was drop-dead gorgeous in the eyes of everybody. Elena had silky straight hazelnut brown hair, with dark chocolate doe eyes. Her smile was as soft as the sunset, subtle enough to give you an airy feeling when she uses it. Nova just felt irritated. She'd love nothing more than to wipe that smile off her face. It was just a persona, a fake version of herself, one she only ever gave to strangers and her followers. If she's trying to sweet-talk them into doing things for her, she gave this to Nova and Jeremy as well.
She was always used to being in Elena's shadow. She didn't mind as much as some might think, Nova quite liked being in the shadows rather than being the center of attention. So, it didn't phase her, but she wasn't oblivious to how annoying it all was in retrospect. Jeremy walked across the kitchen to the refrigerator and grabbed the milk jug and drank straight from it. “Really, Jer?” Elena appeared back in the doorway with two men standing behind her. "Don't drink from the jug, it’s disgusting,'' Jeremy rolls his eyes, capping the jug and walking past Elena and then the men behind her, up the stairs without saying a word. If Nova thought, her and Elena's relationship was strained Jeremy and Elena's relationship was practically non-existent.
“Damn who pissed in his cheerios?” Elena walks further into the kitchen to reveal the body to the voice she just heard, Damon Salvatore, and not too far behind him his brother Stefan was also there, ‘lovely’ she thought. Damon and Stefan both stepped into the fresh hold of the kitchen, Stefan turning to move towards Elena and Damon opting to take a seat at the dinner table next to Nova. "Wacha working on Sparky?" Damon slouches down to peer at the paper in front of Nova while pushing his side into her shoulder. Elena steps in and answers Nova's question for him. "Leave her alone, Damon, she needs to focus on the paper.” Damon sways back to his seat and raises a brow at Nova. “What's so imperative that she doesn't have time to spend with lil' ol’ me?” he bats his eyes at Elena and she just rolls her eyes “Nova decided to neglect to make her schedule for school, so she's doing that now so leave her alone Damon.” Damon puts his hands up in surrender standing from his chair and turning towards the entrance of the living room “I’ll go get your luggage then.” Nova turns around to ask Elena what he was talking about, only to be met with the image of Stefan with his tongue down Elena's throat. “God, guys really, I’m right here get a room” Stefan and Elena break apart and Stefan has at least a shred of decency to look sorry but Elena just smiled “We are in a room Nov, you're just in it.”
Nova chooses to ignore the nickname and ask her original question as she hears Damon clobbering down the stairs with Elena's suitcases.  “Elena, what did Damon mean by luggage, and why is he bringing all of it downstairs?” Elena just cocks her head and furrows her brows, a common notion of when she's going to start being bitchy. “Nova, I’m going on a trip to the lake house with Stefan and Damon?” Typically, Nova wouldn't be fazed when her sister was being a bitch or when the Salvatores would come to steal her sister. The fact that she wasn't told this time and that it was the family lake house irked her a little. “Elena what are you talking about, what trip, you never said you were going on a trip,” “What do you mean Nova, I literally told you this last week.” Nova was floored not only did Elena not tell her she was going on a trip she was trying to gaslight her about it. “No Elena, you didn't tell me a single thing about leaving this weekend.” Before Nova could ask for an explanation Elena cut her off “Nova we literally talked about this last week I promise you, and even if I somehow forgot to tell you it's not a problem, right?” Nova blinked and pondered what would be the outcome of the argument if she just continued to push it. “No, Elena it's not but-,” “Then everything should be good right? I’m leaving money on the stove for food. Use it sparingly please.” Elena walks up to Nova and captures her in a hug “I’ll be back in three days ok?” “Yeah, ok.” Elena pulls back from the hug and gives her a small smile.
Elena turns to Stefan “Are you ready to go?” “Ready whenever you are.” Stefan starts to escort Elena out of the house, to the car where Damon was putting up Elena's luggage. “Ok, one more hug.” Elena turns to hug Nova one last time, muttering a quick love you, before she yells into the space behind her “I'm leaving Jer your in charge of Nova make sure she stays safe, love you!” a faint “Sure’ can be heard from the tops of the stairs. Elena knows that all she’ll get out of him, seemingly satisfied, turns towards the brothers “Alright let's go.” Nova stands numbly at the door as she watches her sister speed off with the brothers. Nova stands in the doorway for a few more minutes processing what just happened. Turning and closing the door behind her she instead chose to focus on remembering what she was doing in the first place before the hectic interruption. She walks into the kitchen and spots the piece of paper seemingly forgotten on the floor. She picks up her paper off the floor and smiles to herself. ``Hey if Elena’s not going to be here for three whole days, no way in hell I’m going to do this today” she thinks to herself, deciding to take advantage of her sister's sudden leave. So she leaves the paper on the table and decides to travel up the stairs and to her brother's room. Knocking on the door she waits a few seconds, hearing him shuffle around before opening it. Without a word he just steps aside and lets her in, as he goes over to the corner of his room to collect his stuff from his nightstand
. Nova drops down onto his bed with a huff. “Did you know Elena was going on a trip to the Lakehouse?” “Yes, and No,” is his answer. “She kind of told me she was going somewhere but didn't say when or wear, why?” Nova brings her hands up to her face and pulls them down pulling her face along with them. “Because I only just found out not even five minutes ago.” Jeremy bends back over his nightstand and stands back up bringing up his jar of weed with him. He sits on the bed opening the jar and shaking his head. “She’s just something else ain’t she?” he complains, dumping a couple of buds from the jar into his hands and onto his tray. “I really wish she would stop telling me to be an adult and then turn around and treat me like a child.” Nova watched as her brother rolled them both a joint as she also explained the events that just happened moments before. “Honestly kid, I just had to accept that Elena is her own person and will do whatever she wants, regardless of the consequences.” Nova ponders over her brother's words as they pass the joint between them.
Jeremy lets out the last of the smoke inhaled from the last joint and takes a deep breath. “Alright, Nova I've got some plans of my own tonight so I'm kicking you out so I can get ready.” Nova laughed as she got up from his bed “Ok, I think I'm going to go skate if that's ok with you?” He nods his head, leaning his head against his pillows enjoying his high “Just make sure to be careful, watch for cars, and be safe.” “I’ll be, I always am.” She says as she leaves his room entering hers only long enough to grab her skateboard, phone, jacket, and headphones before all but sprinting down the stairs “Love you Jer see you later,” she waited long enough to get a response from him before she ran out the door skating her way down the road not knowing where she was going only knowing she wanted to be anywhere but home.
