                                                Chapter 7
The chanting of the early bird outside her window bright and early in the morning was usually one of Nova’s favorite things to wake up to. Now she wishes for the bird's head to explode, to give it a taste of its own medicine. The insistent chirping was making her own head explode. Opening her eyes her retinas were met with the bright rays of the morning sun. Throwing her hand up to block the sun, she rolls over to the side of her bed and grabs her phone from the charger, groaning when her bare feet meet with the cold floor tile for the briefest of seconds. She flips over to the other side of her bed and is met with another face full of sunshine. Rubbing her eyes, she finally sits up, letting out a loud yawn, she turns her phone on and she sees she has a couple missed calls from Alaric. He was probably freaking out over her, and she let out a snort at the thought. In the mists of her grogginess, she didn't register the fact that the sun was not supposed to be in her face when she got up for school. Usually, it was pitch black out when she awoke, and when she left the house, it was usually just light enough outside to make the sky a dangerous gray color. Standing from her bed she walks over to the window to pull the curtains shut. Once finished Nova flops back over to her bed and to her phone which is laid on top. She picks up her phone to check the time, and only now does she register the sun's place in the sky when it matches the time on her phone. 10:15 is what her phone said, in a slight panic Nova gets out of bed to throw some pants on. In her rush to her dresser, she proceeds to stub her toe against the corner of it. The impact caused her to let out a couple less than holy words “Jesus, Mother Fucking, why, why!”  Holding her foot in her hands she hops a couple times swearing some more too before calming down enough to put some pants on.
The second she opens her door she's met with the strong smell of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Following the heavenly smell, Nova jogs down the stairs and when she rounds the corner it's a sight she's never seen before. Elena is crouched over the oven with Jeremy by her side coaching her on what she needed to do. The longer she stood there the more his coaching just seemed like nagging. “Elena, that's not how you do it,”, “Elena do it this way,”, “Elena let me do it,”,  “Elena why does it look like that,” This goes on for a while before Nova clears her throat to try and grab their attention. Both her siblings turn around and try to hide whatever they're concocting behind them. “Nova, what are you doing up?” Elena asks. Jeremy gives her a puzzled look and then shakes his head. “Uh, well, it's,” she looks back down at her phone for the time, “10:25, and nobody woke me up for school sooo,” she en longs at the end of her sentence trying to gauge an answer as to why she wasn't woken school. Elena shifts from one foot to another, and Jeremy scoffs and turns back to the food behind them. “Well with what happened yesterday I just thought you could use a rest day?” her answer sounds more like a question. “Elena the doctor cleared me to go to school. My concussion was not severe enough for that, plus I didn't get a doctor's note for an excused absence.” She was already upset her attendance record was going to be messed up and on the second day of her last year no less. Jeremy sighs “She was afraid something else would happen to you today, so she didn’t make you go to school.” When has Elena ever not been a maniac about something school related? Especially with something as big as attendance. Nova scratches the back of her head and shrugs, “Well alright, so what are you making?” Elena immediately starts to pout, and Jeremy lets out a huff of laughter. “They’re supposed to be blueberry pancakes, but Elena messed up the batter.” Elena whirls around and slaps Jeremy on the arm. “Not true,” she says. “You can't cook for shit.” Elena rolls her eyes at his comment. “” Well, I wouldn't have needed to take over if you weren't burning the batter.” Nova lets out a snort and Elena shoots her a glare. Jeremy laughs too and shakes his head “This was supposed to be a surprise, your favorite breakfast, blueberry pancakes with bacon and eggs on top, but since I guess you're here already it saves me the embarrassment of tripping upstairs and dropping your food.”  Nova laughed again. “Thanks, guys, but I’m really not injured enough to earn breakfast in bed.” Picking up her plate, Jeremy brings it over to the kitchen table setting it down lightly, then he points at the seat in front of it. “Here you go, kid.” Nova skips over to the table giddy with excitement. Her brother hands her a fork and she digs in almost immediately. The warm soft eggs mesh delicately with the crispy greasy bacon and the dough-like pancakes make the entire thing 10 times better. As she scarfs down her breakfast, she hears the doorbell ring. “I got it,” Elena said, stepping away into the front hall. Nova knows she's out of earshot Nova immediately turns to Jeremy, she squints her eyes at him, and Jeremy takes notice. “What?” Chewing her food slowly she answers, “What's the catch?” Jeremy raises his brow” You know, for breakfast in bed?” He just shrugs “When it comes to Elena, probably anything.”
She nods her head in silent agreement. Moments later Stefan Salvatore’s head pops up around the corner. He has an infectious smile on his face, one Nova can't help but reciprocate. “Hey, guys, what 's going on?” Stefan steps into the kitchen and hauls himself onto the counters looking between the two of them. “Nothing much, just eating, what are you doing?” Nova replied with a mouth full of food. Elena walks into the room making a disgusted face “Nov don't speak with your mouth full.'' Jeremy laughs while Stefan continues. “I’m not quite so sure we've been summoned up on the pretense of a good time.” “Yes, we have my dear brother, speaking of which Elena, my dear how about you tell us what this good time is huh? Nova stops chewing when it takes Elena a second to answer. “Well since Nova doesn’t have school today, I was thinking we could all go out to the lake house today, you know, to just relax or something.” Nova raises her brow “Or something?” she asks Elena huffs and crosses her arms “Is it too much to ask for some family quality time around here?” Nova countries eat her breakfast like she didn't hear her sister, and Jeremy looks the other way and starts to fiddle with his fingers. “Well, I for one think it's a great idea,” Stefan interjected, of course, he did. He liked or did anything she said. “Don't you Damon?” Damon nods his head in faux agreement “Totally, a full day with my annoying little brother, my girlfriend, and her two annoying little siblings in one house for a couple hours sounds like a splendid idea Stefan.” he claims sarcastically. Elena giggles and both Stefan and Damon look at her with big dopey grins on their faces. The sickenly sweet display makes her feel like she's going to throw up. She turns to her brother, and he rolls his eyes and pretends to shove his finger down his throat while fake gagging. Nova covers her mouth and snorts at his antics. This grabs Damon’s attention “Whacha laughing at sparky?” Nova calms down a little and lets out a cough. “Um, nothing Damon, I was going to say a day at the lake house sounds like a great idea.”  Elena’s face lights up at the admission “Really?” she asks with too much enthusiasm, and Nova already regrets her decision. “Yeah sure, don't have anything better to do,” she recalled with a shrug. All eyes turned to Jeremy, and his back was turned to everyone, he was currently doing the dishes., or at least pretending to. The sudden silence makes him stop and turn around “What about you karate kid, want to hop on the bandwagon?”   Jeremy pauses and sighs “I uh-,” he turns around and his eyes flit around to everyone before they land on Nova. She already has her best pleading face ready to go, her brows furrowed not in anger but worry, and she pouts her lips. It's the look that means please do not leave me alone all day with them, only God knows what I’ll hear. He closes his eyes and sighs “Yeah whatever, I'll go too.” Elena gasps loudly and Nova sighs, “Really, you mean it Jer?” He shrugs “Yeah sure why not?” Elena jumps with joy “Alrighty everybody start getting around!” Elena immediately runs to her room to get ready herself. The brothers follow not far behind her and when they're out of sight Nova drops her head onto the table. Jeremy finally turns on the water and turns to her “Really?” is all he says. He’s leaning against the island, arms crossed, and ankles are too, he looks like a disappointed dad. “Come on man we can hike and find ourselves a bomb-ass smoking spot man, this doesn't have to be all bad.” Jeremy smiles and nods his head “Sounds like a good plan, I just got some stuff this week so we can use mine.” Nova throws her fist in the air in celebration “This day is turning out better than I imagined.”:
Rolling down the overgrown driveway towards the family vacation house, brought back so many memories for Nova, both good and bad ones. Looking to her left she could see the blue lake stretching across the land in front of her. She remembers fishing with her father and mother when she was young, it was something she never really enjoyed, but for the sake of her poor father’s heart, she entertained him and fished whenever he wanted to. She remembered all the times she and her sibling would jump off the dock together, hand in hand as mom screamed from the porch for us to be careful. All the memories just kept flooding back the closer they got. When they finally reached the house Damon parked the car and everyone got out to stretch. Mainly just the people shoved in the back seat which includes herself, her sister, and Stefan. Since both Damon and Jeremy were bigger than everyone, they got the front seat privilege while the tiny people got shoved to the back. Stretching her body, her bones crackled and popped with her movements. Looking up at the house she used to frequently visit as a child, she couldn't help but feel a slight resentment towards it. From what she didn’t know she just knew today needed to be a good day. So, taking a deep breath she walks up to the house, along with everyone else. Reaching the door Elena brings out the keys and it takes her a moment to open them, but eventually, she does. She pushes on the door, and it gives way to the house. Walking inside it isn't much warmer than it was outside. “Reading her mind Elena turns and asks Damon to get a fire going, Damon answers her request with a mock solute. Walking around the house the floor and everything else has a slight sheen of dust covering it. Even if Elena, Damon, and Stefan had just been here not too long ago. Walking past all the rooms she finally finds the one meant for her. Grabbing the rusty handle, she turns the knob and pushes the door in. The hinges make a loud creaking sound as it swings open, she makes a mental note that she’ll need to oil it later. For now, she takes in the room she hasn't seen in years. “Her room is the dirtiest when it comes to dust coverage. There might have been just a sheen in the living room but there was an entire blanket of dust settled over the top of all her things. She had some stuffed animals in a corner of the room all of them stacked haphazardly over one another. The walls are still covered in various boy band posters, some of which weren't even together anymore.
Rolling up her sleeves she starts to take down anything and everything that reminds her of her old self. She threw the stuffed animals into the hallway closet along with the floral bedding that covered her bed. She replaced the bedding with a plain white sheet, pillowcase, and blanket. She carefully took down the posters and rolled them up and put those into the hallway closet as well. Her room here wasn't the biggest. It was a circular room with a bed in the upper left side of the room and the tv was in the upper right area of the room. She had a small vanity dresser in the bottom left next to the door, when she was done with her bed she moved on to that next. She started by taking down all the photos in the mirror. The pictures had a variety of her loved ones in them: her mom, her dad, her brother, her sister, and even some photos of her and her Aunt Jenna. When she took down the photo of her and her Aunt Jenna, she just stared at it. The picture was one of her favorites of her and her aunt. She remembers the day very clearly.
The bright mid-summer sun was beating down on the small little garden in front of the house. She and her Aunt Jenna were bent over that garden trying to salvage what they could from the massive heat wave they had just experienced. The temperatures reached almost 102 degrees. She remembers looking for her Aunt Jenna everywhere and when she finally did find her, she was hunched over the garden digging, poking, and watering everything she could. She remembered asking if her aunt needed help with anything and that is how she got roped into helping her fix her garden. After working in 99-degree weather for a couple houses she had sweat everywhere, she had so much sweat on her forehead that it was accumulating and dripping into her eyes. When they were just about to finish up Elena and Jeremy came outside. Jeremy with some water, and Elena with a camera. In the photo, she’s wiping her forehead with her hand and giving a thumbs up with the other and her Aunt Jenna is smiling from ear to ear with one thumb up and one hand on her shoulder. It's a picture she always loved of her and her Aunt Jenna, even if they did look like sweaty pigs.
The more she stared at the photo the sadder she became so she just stuck the photo into the makeshift box she had and when the final photo was removed from the vanity, she shoved the box to the top shelf in the hallway closet and then shut the door. Walking back into the room she finally deems the room fit enough to be in and she exits the room to go find herself something to eat from the lunches they brought along with them. Entering the living room, she met with a less-than-pleasant sight, Elena was sandwiched between both Damon and Stefan. Damon was sucking on her neck grabbing her butt and Stefan had his tongue down her throat groping her breasts. Her brother must have had the same idea as her because she could hear his noise of disgust. “Come on guys really? We've barely been here for two seconds.” he throws his hands up in defeat. Turning the way, he came Nova can hear him grumble more insults before he disappears completely down the hall. When they both pull away from her Elena is the only one that looks guilty this time. Stefan doesn't say anything, he just buries his head into Elena's chest not wanting to deal with whatever was happening. Damon just smirked and waved his hand at her as if telling her to run along. She groans in disgust, and she decides she's no longer hungry.  Instead of heading to her room though, she makes a detour to Jeremy’s. She only has to knock a few times before he answers. “Hey kid, what's up.” Nova gives him a look before she says, “Do you want to go on a hike?” it takes Jeremy a few seconds to register what she’s asking “oh- OH a hike right, yeah hang on just one second.” She nods “Cool I’ll be outside I’ll let Elena know.” he nods in agreement “Alright sounds good.”  She turns from the door as he shuts it making her way back into the living room, praying that Elena and the boys have at least moved to a private room. Walking into the living room she only finds Elena this time. “Hey where did tweedle dee and tweedle dum go?” Elena giggles. “They went to gather firewood, looks like we don't have any.” She says as she points to the empty wood holder next to the fireplace. “Oh ok, hey you would mind if me and Jeremy went for a hike, would you?” Elena sits on the couch with the chips of her choice “Yeah I don’t care just watch your step, and please dress warmly.” she says dismissively as she waves her hand to emphasize that she couldn't care less. “Ok cool we will be ho- back soon,” Nova couldn't bring herself to think of this place as home anymore, it was just an old structure full of old memories a reminder of the people who didn’t exist anymore.

So I actually haven't finished the vampire diaries because Netflix got so expensive lol I got to about the 8th episode of season 4 so I’m sure some of the things I say aren't going to be accurate in the show, so I just wanted you, readers, to know that this doesn’t really follow the timelines. Also, nova doesn't know about the vampires or anything of the sort, she's a little clueless. Grammar mistakes were made.

                                            Chapter 3
Nova is practically sprinting to her first class, looking between her schedule and the halls to make sure she didn't run into somebody. ‘First period, first period’ she said over and over in her mind looking back down at the paper she slows to a slight jog so she can see the paper better.

Nova only has enough time to process the first couple of classes before shoving the paper into her bag and rounding the corner to room 104. As she walks up to the door her nerves are running haywire and she feels like she's about to explode. She opens the door and steps inside and is immediately stared at by everyone in the room. She can start to feel the room close around her, until she hears a familiar voice, one that brings her immediate comfort. “Hello, may I help you?” When she looked up to put the man to the voice, she's internally grateful he isn't being anything but her teacher at the moment. Alaric Saltzman was another person she held dear. Alaric helped her through losing her Aunt Jenna as her death also hit him hard as well. When Nova heard she had died in a car accident just like her parents she was numb, she lost another family member to a car accident, and it hurt. She could only imagine the pain Alaric went through when she died. So, she was grateful for him and everything he had done for her. Nova lowers her head trying to cave into herself to try and make herself smaller. She walks up to his desk and hands him her late slip, he takes it from her and takes the opportunity to lean over to whisper in her ear “You, ok?” She rises up a little to give him a nod, he gives one back, and leaning back up he talks to her as a normal student. “Alright, there's an open seat in the back row or one in the front if you prefer, please choose one and we'll get started.”  She sent him a grateful look and walked to the seat at the back of the class. “Alrighty then, hello everybody I'm sure you know who I am, at least you should already because I’ve been teaching some of you since freshman year.” The class erupted into a bunch of giggles and snorts. As Alaric Continues on through the introductory lesson, she opens her bag to get everything she needs, her crumpled schedule falling out of her backpack and onto the floor. The boy next to her noticed this and picked it up handing it back to her “Hey I think you dropped this.'' The boy said. She looked up to see who was speaking to her and she instantly screamed at herself. The boy was none other than Arnold Copeland, a boy who she knew well, and she wished she didn't. “Oh, thanks.” She snatches the paper from him, smoothing it out on the desk as Arnold speaks up “It looks like we have the same lunch.” he says with a smile she doesn't give one back “Yup, looks like it.” she replied. Arnold is a bit of an oddball; he wasn't popular by any means more on the nerd side of the school spectrum. The only bad thing about him, he swore up and down that she was the love of his life. This year was going to be her worst one yet.
By the time third period has rolled around she figures she’s going to have every class this year with Arnold just like every year since seventh grade, given by his and her last name. They're close in the alphabet and that just so happens to be the method used to create the students' classes, every single year. She doesn't know if she would be able to handle Arnold all year long, again. Arnold wasn't the worst-looking guy at the school, but he definitely wasn't the greatest-looking dude. He had sandy blonde hair worn in a pompadour cut, green bugged-out eyes, and the bulkiest glasses she had ever seen on a person. Nova had met Arnold in the seventh grade, at the time she didn't think anything of him, until one day he had asked her to the winter dance the school was throwing. She had to politely let him down telling him she wasn't going to the dance in the first place. Ever since then he tried to get her attention, like when he broke his arm in eighth grade trying to flip off the playground slide to impress her, but it didn't. She also remembers the time in sophomore year, she came to school on valentine’s day and a bunch of “letters” could visibly be seen hanging from the air gate at the top of her locker, when she opened her locker more fell at her feet. She was so embarrassed she remembered picking one up and opening it and immediately seeing Arnold’s face. It was a picture of him in a tuxedo, it was an oddly good picture of him, but it freaked her out to no end. She didn't even open the rest of the letters fearing what she might see, instead picked all of them up and threw them into the trash, and immediately went to find him. When she did she laid into him telling him that she didn't want to be his girlfriend like she had been trying to tell him since the seventh grade. She couldn't wait for the school day to end, and it was only the first day. When the bell rings signifying the end of class Nova all but runs out of the class giving a worried-looking Alaric a small wave.
Nova couldn't have done anything worse to herself than turning in her electives late because she got the only class, she didn't want this year, gym. She hated the entire walk to the gymnasium, she couldn't stand getting changed in front of people, choosing to always go to the bathroom stall to get some privacy. The fact that she also had a male gym teacher this year was annoying. She thought all male gym teachers were overactive and boisterous, they always had favorites, she couldn’t think of a single male gym teacher she had that didn't prefer a specific student over others. She enters the gym following the other gaggle of students and to her relief, the bleachers are pulled out far enough to fit a small class. She sees other students already sitting down in just their regular school clothes. She can at least give credit to whoever was teaching this class that the first day wasn't actually a gym day but an introduction day like everybody else. As she takes her seat, she decides to take out her schedule to see just who was teaching this year. She figured she would see the name Donny Hubbard the usual male gym teacher who taught there but next to the teacher information instead she saw a man named Finn Mikaelson. ‘Oh great” she thought, looking around the room she didn't seem to find the mystery man in question recognizing almost everyone on the bleachers. Her head snaps up as she hears the bell give its final warning ring for students to get to class. She then hears the sound of the gym office door squeaking as it's opened, and when her eyes land on the man that is Finn Mikaelson, she is taken aback.
He doesn't look anything like she thought he would, he is not old for one, and he doesn't have a beer gut or weird glasses. He looks refined, gentlemanly almost. As he continues to walk toward the middle of the room Nova can't help but admire the man. He had ashy brown hair with a shorter version of an ivy league haircut with the top swept over to the side. He was rather tall and intimidating, brutish almost, but it confused her. Mystic Falls was a pretty small town where everyone knew everybody, she would have definitely noticed someone like him. When he gets to the middle of the room, he clears his throat and gives a slight smile before he opens his mouth. “Good morning, everybody, how is everyone today?” There was a pause before various students answered at the same time in the same monotone voice, a variety of good, ok, and greats, can be heard before it goes silent again. She can only guess what everyone was thinking, probably the same thing she is, who is this guy? When her attention is brought back to him, he has seemingly pulled out a clipboard from thin air. “When I call your name just respond with an affirmation, please.”  When he starts listing off the names of students Nova lets her mind wander. He's most definitely educated, the way he speaks, the way walks, the way holds himself. His accent was most definitely not like anything she had heard before, like a British New Yorker. What kind of guy would become a gym teacher if he knew as much as she thought he did?
The closer he got to speaking her name the more she started to freak out. She just couldn't figure out why. When it was her turn, he looked back down at the paper and paused for a second too long for her liking, then continued on “Cassanova Gilbert?” Nova took a deep breath and coughed out “Here,” he looks up at her and it feels like he is staring straight into her soul his eyes are mesmerizing, a light hazy green color that made her feel hazy herself just looking at them. It made Nova question further just why this kind of guy was here teaching gym of all things. She thinks he'd be a better English teacher than a gym teacher just from what she's observed so far. He looks back down to his clipboard and scribbles in what she assumed was her attendance, he then asks another question. One he hadn't asked any of the other kids “That’s quite a long name Miss Gilbert do you have a nickname you'd rather go by?” all eyes turn to her, and she can’t help but shrink in on herself again because of it. “Um... N-Nova.` She wants to bury herself in a hole when she starts to stutter. He just turns back to his clipboard and scribbles the information down and moves on to the next student. It leaves her with a feeling akin to whiplash, she can't quite explain it. The rest of the gym time was spent as free time talking to friends and comparing schedules. All the kids already loved this teacher for just that decision alone. Nova just decided to grab her headphones from her bag and play some music to pass the time until her next period. About ten minutes before class ended, she decided to look at her schedule one more time to try and memorize it better. When she pulled it out, she was pleasantly surprised to see that Mr. Mikaelson happens to be her homeroom teacher as well, just her luck. After those ten minutes of class were finally done the bell gave its first ring for lunchtime. She wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.
The knot in her stomach decided to stay and make a home in her stomach and she felt like she was going to throw up. It was like feeling nauseous and having butterflies in your stomach at the same time, but either way, it made her uneasy. She decided she wasn't going to eat lunch, even if she tried, she was sure it might end up in the toilet bowl. So, when she left the gymnasium, she walked down a couple halls to her locker to grab her skateboard. She moved with every other student in AB lunch to get out to the courtyard as fast as she could. When the doors were opened, she was pushing herself through the crowd, getting complaints from the students she was shoving but she didn't care. As soon as she broke free from the group she sprinted to the pavement, probably looking like a maniac. She threw her board down as gently as she could at the speed she was going, having thrown it a little too hard it started to roll down the sidewalk. When she caught up to where it had rolled, she instantly was taking off from the school grounds to ride down to the park to try and get away from whatever she was feeling. She arrived at the park and checked the time on her phone. She had twenty minutes until she had to go back. Nova moves down the sidewalk towards the swings and stops herself right in front of the first one. Setting her board in the mulch a few feet from the swing of her choice> She jogged up to it and pulled herself up into the seat. Nova loved to swing even as a kid, it was so freeing being able to fly in the air at the speed of her choice, the height of her choice. Everything about swinging was about what she wanted, in her life she didn't get much of that with Elena breathing down her neck, with expectations the same as her parents did. Jeremy only ever paid attention to her if he wanted to piss her off or when she needed a supply of smoke, or he ran out and asked to share with her. So, she was a tad bit glad about it but sometimes she missed her brother, and he really couldn't care less. When she tried to hang out with him, he always had some sort of excuse to not go. ‘I can't have plans, sorry maybe later.’
 “I have homework?”
 “Really?”
“…yes?”
She stopped trying after that, figuring there was no point in forcing him. So to be able to be in control of something for once, she loved the feeling it gave her. She sat down on the swing she pulled her headphones from her neck to put them on, before she picks a song though, she sets an alarm for twenty minutes, then she chooses her favorite song, a new one called Back to December by Taylor Swift, she had played it nonstop since it came out
. When she gets done listening to her fifth song, she looks down at the time shown on the lit-up screen and almost keels over at it. Twelve thirty-five it read. She jumps off the swing in a hurry grabbing her board not even bothering to get on it knowing she would have to run in order to make it before class. The thing about running, even if it made her sweaty and smelly, she quite enjoyed the speed, the wind in her face, her hair whipping around it too. It took her three minutes to get to school and by the time she got there, she had one minute to get her board in her locker and get to class. This time though she doesn't have the luxury of a late slip, and just her luck Foreign Language was her next period. She had only ever heard bad things about the woman teaching the class. Everyone told her she was very mean, very demanding, bland, and ruthless. She did not want to get on the bad side of someone with that description. She sprints as fast as she can to her class, getting reprimanded by a teacher for running in the halls but she didn't care.
The second she throws open the door to her classroom the bell rings. The woman at the front of her class whips her head around to look at the culprit of the sudden intrusion with a wicked glare. Nova immediately apologized for being loud and late. The woman just gives her a nod, telling her to take her seat, the only one open is the single desk at the very back of the class, she couldn't be happier. “Hello class my name is Mrs. Allen welcome to foreign language.” Nova knew the second she introduced herself everyone was right. She was very bland and emotionless, condescending. Running her hands down her face she takes out her supplies and waits for the end of this endless torture called High School.
