there’s something about seeing fanart of Cynthia’s Elphie being taller than Ariana’s Glinda that just feels so…wrong. Like….call me crazy, but them having the same height is one of the things that separates them from other Elphies and Glindas.

The direct, intense eye contact. The ability to be able to kiss without having to lean down or stand up on tiptoes. Being able to press their foreheads together by just moving a little forward. It’s just so….them.

Am I losing my mind??

no one asked for these but i felt like doing them anyway

Glinda

spoils her kids fucking rotten

but on the flip side: is the stricter more disciplinarian one

100% would dress her and her toddler in matching outfits

is so supportive. like, embarrassingly supportive

glinda is the annoyingly loud mom at sports games but everyone secretly loves her bc she brings great snacks and a full first aid kit, and she makes sure every kid feels like they have a whole crowd rooting for em

glinda is a crier. college dropoff? sobbing. graduation? sobbing. first grade recital? ....still sobbing

(she's a pretty crier tho so it's ok)

glinda is a "takes the kids out of school for a mommy date w/ shopping & ice cream" parent

glinda is also a "i will stay up past midnight to help u finish this project while elphie lectures u about procrastination" parent

takes a million photos

has an entire arts and crafts room. elphie has to remind her not to do the kids posters herself

very sentimental. doesn't want to throw anything away

calls her kids by nicknames instead of their real name 90% of the time

would be the one to shout "i love you!" out the car window at a high school carpool line

gets a little too invested in impressing the other parents at times

is in a million facebook groups

engages in pda in front of the kids just to make em squirm

Elphie

comes off scary but is the biggest softie fr

was very nervous but turns out to be a complete natural

helps the kids with their homework, packs their lunches, is always checking in on how they're doing

reads a thousand parenting books in preparation

dad jokes. the worst dad jokes

is also a crier, but in a "teary eyed and discrete sniffles" way

is the chef of the family. glinda is the one who gets caught up in whats healthy tho while elphie is happy to make mac n cheese if it gets the kid to eat something

has that calm gentle comforting vibe. the parent you go to to snuggle into their side and just be quiet together for a moment

has a sixth sense for knowing when something is up

is always a little scared of being like her own father

wants her kids to feel free to be themselves, doesn't really care if they're making a ton of friends or doing the right sports or keeping up with whats trendy so long as they're happy

if u present elphie with a good enough powerpoint & explanation, u can probably convince her to give in to almost anything

this includes the pet. that glinda didn't want. (that is 100% glinda's pet now)

loves to sing to and read to her babies

is the "i will still carry my baby to bed" parent despite said baby being like 13 years old now

will happily play with her kids on the jungle gym, in the water park, she'll ride all the rides, etc

the moment I heard elphaba's delivery of "there's a girl i know..." in i'm not that girl i knew i had to draw this comic, i strongly recommend listening to it while you read for the full experience!

this comic is a companion to this piece (which was inspired by glinda's delivery of the same line in the i'm not that girl reprise).

nobody asked for this post BUT has anybody talked about the beautiful metaphor of all the call and response choreography in the Wicked movie??? how the dancing shows the influence that characters have over each other. cuz im about to.

okay okay look at this. everybody at shiz copies Galinda during "what is this feeling"

okay standard expected yeah but THEN we get to "dancing through life" (AKA everybody's horny for Jonathan Bailey) and Fiyero has to "corrupt his fellow classmates"

WATCH them follow along! watch them LEARN the dance as his influence spreads over them. BUT not just them! because for the first time in her life, Galinda is NOT the center of attention. she's nor in command of the crowd and she JOINS IT. SHE JOINS THE CROWD.

now of course she eventually finds her way to the center, she finds a place of influence in the dance because that's who she is. When Glinda isn't in control, she joins the influence to take control of it.

but you know who isn't dancing? you know who's the one person refusing that call? of course you do you watched the movie too.

and yes. I know, those of us that are familiar with musical theater probably already saw all of this. but shhhh this is fun to talk about anyways. AND we're getting to the fun part. that's right... it's the

now THIS is what's special about the call and response aspect of the choreography. THIS is the part that makes all of us cry whether or not we consciously realize it.

because whereas Glinda is able to FIND her place of control in the influence, Elphaba doesn't have that ability. she's NEVER had that. she can't join a crowd because she's different and she sticks out no matter what.

Elphaba has to do her own thing. She always has to go it alone. that's why this dance is so strange and so beautiful!! because it's so uniquely her! and THATS why the call and response motif of the choreography makes this moment so sad. because it's not just Elphie not caring what anyone thinks.

it's a desperate call for anyone, ANYONE to respond to her.

And Galinda sees her. FINALLY, a response. finally, Elphaba has broken through that wall. for the first time in her life, she's reached out a hand, and someone else took it.

and i just think that's beautiful. 🥺

i definitely have more to say about this but for now I will end it here anyways thanks for coming to my OZTEDtalk.

Elphaba and Galinda both recognize the value of popularity, but E views her pre-existing sorcery talent/potential prestige as a stepping stone to attaining love/acceptance/favorable image, while G views her pre-existing popularity as a stepping stone to sorcery training and prestige. "If I'm talented/high-ranking enough they'll like me" vs. "If they like me enough they'll promote me". Ambitious in opposite directions but in the end both have just being loved and chosen as their core need. truly foils of all time.

Bonus: both taking risks by leveraging their respective advantages for each other
