just because you claim to be socialist doesnt mean you are. nazis werent socialist, in fact they were more right wing. and even if they were it wouldnt make the system as a whole bad by default. there have been facists who were hard core capitalists!! (lookin at you mussolini!) but we dont see people claiming that capitalism is bad by default because of it. bad people will do bad things no matter what they call themselves, even if what they call themselves is socialist.

Coming Out To Family, Friends, And Employers

veganism cannot remain apolitical

Due to the way capitalism works, we cannot simply expect meat production to decline as vegan product consumption inclines. Capitalism is not a zero sum game and two different markets can be profitable and grow at the same time.

Veganism is intersectional, and overlaps with other forms of oppression! For example, slaughter houses are most commonly placed near neighborhoods that are predominantly POC. These slaughter houses provide health risks for all who live near them and as a result more commonly affect POC. This is just once of the many examples of how racism over laps with animal rights and veganism. Human liberation is undeniably linked to animal liberation.

Then, theres the condemning of traditional indigenous lifestyles. This is ENTIRELY inappropriate as settlers are the ones who brought animal agriculture to the Americas through colonization! Furthermore, traditional livelihoods that see humans as an integral part of the ecosystem are VASTLY different from the factory farming that happens behind closed doors.

Unlike what many claim being vegan is NOT one hundred percent accessible for everyone, as there are structural barriers that bar people from having access to vegan foods. Now I may lose you here, but class based oppression has lead to the creation of food deserts, or an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. These food deserts mostly affect low income families in urban areas. This is not mentioning the fact that lower income zip codes have up to 30% more convenience stores and 2.5 times more exposure to fast food places than higher income counterparts. And anyone who’s gone out for fast food knows that there aren’t really any vegan options there. Unless, of course, you’re okay with eating french fries with ketchup packets for every meal.

Lets not forget those vegan nazis and fascists! If we simply leave our politics at the door, instead of addressing the vegans out there who hold hateful views, are we really helping? While veganism may be a philosophy, it is still inherently tied to politics. By enabling those with anti-Semitic views, for example, we are allowing for these views to flourish. And lets not mention the fact that often times anti-Semitic rhetoric is used to blame Jewish people for the inherent flaws within capitalism, and then the fact that fascism is just capitalism on crack. By not addressing these and “leaving our politics behind” and “only caring for the animals” we are letting serious problems arise within the community.

Humans are animals too! According to The Vegan Society veganism is, "A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose…” Considering the fact that we too are animals, when purchasing things, in order for them to truly vegan we must look at the humans involved in the making of our “vegan” products. That non-dairy Natural Bliss creamer might be delicious in your coffee, but their parent company is Nestle. You know, the company exposed for using child labor for their chocolate? A product can't truly be vegan if it causes human suffering.

This is the last one: Israel. Israel is currently using VEGANISM to distract from their ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people! Israeli soldiers can have vegan army boots to wear while murdering Palestinians and vegan meals to keep them satiated while they bomb schools with children inside of them. But at least no animals were harmed, right?

All I’m trying to say is that veganism is more than just a way of consuming, and it involves more than just the individual; just like all activism it MUST be intersectional!

These are the solutions we need to policing right now. Remember: the problem cannot be solved by technocratic solutions (i.e. body cams, further trainings, etc.) The problem is policing itself.
