Literally, ME!
Daily writing promptIf you could be a character from a book or film, who would you be? Why?View all responses There’s no book or movie character that lives the life I live and still manages to be rooted in reality and look good doing it. Seriously, I am such a fan of myself for all that I’ve become through my lived experiences that there’s no way I could possibly insult that journey by wanting…

A Response to a response.
A Response to a response.
So, if anyone knows the ebb-and-flow of college courses we know that mostly all professors insist on mandatory responses between classmates… <insert: blank stare> Well… in my last U.S. History class we covered all the usual history topics that are generally studied. Naturally, I always went a step further to address any relevant racial impact. Somebody – a young, biracial, inexperienced (and in…

"This is America": "Strange Fruit" Remixed
A painful truth of our history that has yet to be reconciled. "Strange Fruit" still...
Context: I wrote this piece for an Honors English class in my first full year of college (remember: I started later in life). We dissected this poem/song by Abel Meeropol/Billie Holiday to better understand the significance of the writer/performer and the resonance of the message today. It illustrates a painful truth about the American way and the long-standing systemic hate that still breathes…

Waves: A Poem For Grieving Mothers
Waves: A Poem For Grieving Mothers
Tears of joy. Overflow!Inside then out. In the air of the world. Totally in love with full dependence. The pain of suckling but with relaxing satisfaction. Scoot. Crawl. Walk. Fall down. Running! It all goes so fast. First day of school. Crayons. Books. Fieldtrips & playground antics. Apples for teacher and snaggle-toothed smiles for school pics. Twelve years of projects and parties and “mom,…

RACE: Can non-whites be racist?
This may be sensitive for some and enlightening for others. Proceed with caution. In my Anthropology class, this question was raised as an extra credit opportunity for students. I almost didn’t respond (my grades are good so it wasn’t necessary). But I couldn’t resist this chance to simply write my perspective and what I’ve learned in all the many facets of life. Paired with my Minority Studies…

Have courage and be kind.
This is one of my favorite lines from the movie, “Cinderella”, that has been fused into my very being since I heard it. I repeat to myself and others like a commandment, or a mantra. The two work together and can make the difference in nearly every instance of the human experience. On more occasions than I can count I stumble upon the unsolicited opinions of others about things of absolutely no consequence to them that are weak and mean. And these are not strangers who spew hateful ideaology and judgment upon others... We are somehow connected, but not too close for discomfort. Regardless, while I find it emotionally and mentally exhausting to be exposed to that kind of mediocrity and subpar behavior, the very concept of having courage and being kind is what I choose to demonstrate as I simply scroll on past their mess. If I corrected people in those moments of unbridled and unnecessary condemnation - whew! Let’s just say I wouldn’t be here writing freely and happily. I hope we can all make a better effort of freeing ourselves and others from the destructive words that serve no purpose for good, only to hurt others. Seek compassion first; remember to have courage and be kind. Otherwise, your opinion is just another elbow.

Part of writing is not so much that you're going to actually write something every day, but what you should have, or need to have, is the possibility, which means the space and time set aside—as if you were going to have someone come to tea.

The Perversion of Academia: Teaching to Test
The Perversion of Academia: Teaching to Test
The stress of testing. So, back in 2016 I made the bold decision to snatch my two youngest kiddos right out of the traditional education sectors to begin our homeschool journey. Over the years, we tried public schools, private schools, charter schools – nothing really worked enough to our pleasing. While curriculum, cost, and bullying were present in each of these, the stress of standardized…
