Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 21
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What an unreasonable man; they only met once on a plane. Even if his habits remained the same as in his previous life, these trivial quirks shouldn’t have aroused Ivanov’s interest enough to investigate him.
Chen Zhang An’s death should have been good news to Ivanov. It is the removal of a powerful competitor after all.
‘I thought Chinese people are all very friendly and warm. Hey - hey, don't go, long live the friendship between Russia and China!’ Following close behind Chen An, Ivanov started spouted strings of utter nonsense.
What an idiot.
Chen An couldn't help but frown. How could a madman like Ivanov be his competitor?
‘How do you say in it Mandarin? We have a shared destiny! Hey, An, how about a drink?’ Ivanov didn't seem ready to part with Chen An yet.
With Ivanov’s looks and wealth, he really didn't need to follow behind a man whose looks are nothing exceptional.
Chen An felt a sudden bewilderment; Why is Ivanov following him? Is it just because he share a few similarities to ‘Chen Zhang An’?
But even more perplexing, why is he in the cruise bar drinking with Ivanov?
‘I haven't introduced myself; I'm Ivanov.’
For a man with such striking looks, he would attract attention no matter where he goes. Ivanov reserved the entire bar the moment he stepped inside, his burly guards standing guard at the door entrance like stone guardians, scaring away all the other tourists who tried to enter the bar.
Without a word, Chen An picked up a glass and took a sip.
His indifferent demeanor gave Ivanov an odd feeling that he was trying to kick an iron plate. Jeering disdain flashed through his eyes as he lightly circled the rim of his wine glass with a slender finger. ‘As is the usual custom of making friends, aren't you going to tell me your name?’
‘But you know that already, don’t you?’ Chen An replied languidly. He isn't dumb enough to jump into hole Ivanov dug for him.
He couldn't quite accustom himself to the strong alcohol. It seems like his sensitivity to alcohol has increased immensely since his rebirth, because in the past, not even a thousand shots could bring him down. In fact, he had once depended on this alcoholic capacity that is as vast as the sea to seal a deal with Ivanov’s father on the bar table.
Whether you are a man or woman, whether you are a child or a senior citizen, all Russians like to drink. Vodka in particular, is an integral part of their lives.
The glass of martini in his hands felt like a glass of poison; Chen An had a restless urge to finish it in a mouthful.
Could it be that after switching a physical body, his alcoholic tolerance had turned to shit?
‘Don't be a girl, An. Drink it all.’ Ivanov smiled as he raised his emptied glass in his hand, his words successfully provoking Chen An.
Though Chen An appear to be in his thirties, but his soul is that of a man over forty years old. He didn't enjoy being looked down by someone so much younger than him one single bit.
Especially when he was a champion drinker in the past.
Chen An then did an action that he regretted to the bottom of his soul. He raised the glass of martini and downed it completely. Translator’s notes: *Although An is Chen An’s given name (with Chen being his family name), but typically with Chinese names that has only 2 characters, people will address them with their full name as oppose to only their given name. To do otherwise, would be informal, almost like a pet name. So, for a stranger who you technically only met once to call you ‘An’, it is a little creepy.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 20
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'To my knowledge, Lao Zi has not made an appearance for many years.'
Inside the cabin, a small lean man spoke in authentic Cantonese whilst he smoked a cigarette as he cracked opened the crate Chen An bought in for inspection.
This dark-skinned petite man is named Ah Wei and he is one of Tiger King's subordinate. He is also the person in charge of carrying out the transaction with Chen An. Although Ah Wei had been active in the Southeast Asian region for several years, but it is not easy to gain the trust of local arm dealers in the various Southeast Asian countries.
In times like these, they frequently require a middleman with an established reputation in the trade such as Chen An to act as a go-between to make the transaction.
Tiger King is a mafia boss based in Guangzhou. He was born with the name Wang Guo Wei and started out as a hooligan in his youth. Eventually, with his exceptional intelligence and viciousness, he carved out a name for himself to become the Tiger King he is known today.
Back in the day, Chen An had used the pseudonym 'Lao Zi' to conduct business with Tiger King. But as his own business grew, he stopped concerning himself with such small dealings and instead, focused his attentions to Africa and the Middle East.
'Please help me pass on a message to Master Tiger: If an opportunity ever arises, I would personally pay a visit to him.'
Chen An eyed the open crate of weapons. 'Are there any problems?'
Even though this is Vietnam, it is still wiser to close such business dealings as soon as possible instead of chitchatting and dawdling.
'I will pass on your message to the boss.' Ah Wei then gestured to the side and a person soon stepped forward with a small pouch that An Wei tossed towards Chen An.
Bouncing the pouch lightly in his hands, Chen An smiled thinly as he tucked it into his pocket.
Observing this act, Ah Wei asked, 'Aren't you going to open it?'
  'I trust Master Wang's honor.'
Ah Wei instantly broke into a grin when he heard those words. 'You are doubt Lao Zi's man. Let's work together often in the future.'
  'Of course.'
After he left the cargo boat, Chen An appeared barely any different from when he had first arrived in Vietnam.  Like a stereotypical tourist, he went about taking photos while he waited at the pier for the ship back to Shanghai.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 19
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Take me to the goods.' Was Chen An's only bland reply.   Though this man had a mild and harmless visage, but in his phoenix eyes, only a cold apathy could be found, unfathomable like a forest lake in the depths of the night.   The waiter pinned Chen An with a long look. Though he had never seen him before, but this man appeared both calm and cold; he certainly don't behave like a novice.   'Come with me.'   The waiter removed the café apron from his waist and led Chen An into the storeroom next door. In a corner, he squatted down and shifted aside a few bags of coffee beans to reveal an entrance to an underground basement.   The waiter took the lead and leaped in with Chen An following close behind. The dark basement below was a completely different world to the café outside.   After the lights were switched on, rows of guns could be seen lining the walls. These are certainly not toy models.   'This is the first batch.' The waiter cracked open a crate to reveal a pile of dangerous firearms buried in hay. Chen An returned his book back into his bag. Under the watchful eye of the waiter, he slipped on a pair of gloves and retrieved a pistol from the crate. With experienced hands, he fiddled with the gun. As he expected, the sensation of holding a gun felt wonderful.   "This is an imitation of the American 0.45 caliber colt model 1911." Chen An shot a look at the waiter beside him, the coldness flashing through his eyes driving a quiver into the waiter's heart.   'It's not inferior to the original!' The petite waiter retorted viciously with a voice laced with malice. But if Chen An could be startled so easily, he wouldn't be Chen An at all.   'Where are the 92 pistol models?' Chen An questioned instead as he returned the pistol back into the crate. 'In here.' One would suddenly feel weakened and feeble after delivering a forceful punch into water. Seeing only Chen An's emotionless display, the small waiter unconsciously softened his tone as he opened another crate for Chen An to peruse. Just like before, Chen An started examining the goods. Although they are not authentic, the quality of these counterfeits are still acceptable. In a place like Vietnam, other than the factories publicly known to be owned by large organisations, there are also numerous underground military factories. While he can't dabble in large weaponry, he certainly can deal with these mass counterfeit pistols. 'Help me store them in the car.' Chen An said as he removed his gloves.
Translator’s note:
* From ‘Tao Te Ching’ chapter 46. The complete quote ends with ‘Therefore he who is contented with contentment shall be always content’. In short, Lao Zi advocates complying with nature and giving up material desires to gain happiness.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 18 + Ranting + Happy CNY!
Translator rant:
Hullo hullo hullo ~
So I noticed that there had been reposting going on. I can understand that there are other sites that are more accessible to readers (yes, reposter on Wattpad. I am looking at you.). So with that said, I can close an eye to reposting as long as appropriate credit is given (i.e. the author and yes. Me ~)
However, you might notice that this chapter looks bizarre. It's because there is this aggregator site that is frankly pissing me off. Never mind that they don't credit; they actually went out of the way to erase the existence of translators on their site. Case in point: either they didn't copy my translation notes OR they copied it but explicitly deleted away the 2 words 'Translator's notes'.
 Just these 2 words.
 ... seriously?
It is not cool to frame yourself as the original source of content through deliberate omission.
Which is why I'm going to post with images and watermarking because I am that petty. TAKE THAT. However, I realise that it is a bit more work than I want to do so I am going to try something weird: I'm going to image only a portion. You read that right: each chapter would be a terrifying monster made out of text and .jpg.
Let's see if it works out.
All that Angry aside, let's move on to the Happy. HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR EVERYONE. Was planning to post this chapter and reply to comments earlier but I got busy trying to avoid all my relatives. Enjoy ~
Tumblr media
Now on to the chapter!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With less flabs on his face, subtle contours on his face could finally be seen. He and Chen Yang are truly worthy of being called relatives; a mild resemblance in the brow could be observed with closer examination.
And as though the thought suddenly occurred to him, Chen An slowly removed his braces. Instantly, his agreeable appearance was elevated by several degrees. No matter how great a person’s facial features look, if their teeth are ugly, the overall appearance would inevitably suffer.
Chen An isn’t really a vain person; he just believed that for a person who can’t control their own weight or general hygiene, they no doubt lack complete control over their own life and career. Such a person need not be inept; they are merely not worthy for Chen An to either associate with or trust.
                                                  -------------------
After spending the night in the hotel, Chen An joined the tour group to begin their tour of this beautiful place renowned for its stunning natural scenery.
While he travelled around and enjoyed himself in the tour group, Chen An secretly made contact with a buyer. His true purpose here wasn’t to take a holiday but to complete a transaction in Vietnam.
Fortunately, buyers and sellers typically communicate via unique codes that outsiders cannot crack easily. Hence, even if he is no longer Chen Zhang An, it serves little deterrence to his continued business in arms trafficking.
Besides, no one knows the true identity of the person behind the moniker 'Lao Zi’*.
There is only a river dividing the estuary to Yunnan and Vietnam. After the tour group had travelled within Yunnan for several days, they will then transit to Vietnam where they will have five days free at leisure before returning to Shanghai by boat at Halong Bay, Vietnam.
Five days is sufficient time for Chen An.
 Translator’s note:
*Lao Zi/ Laozi is an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is the supposed author of 'Tao Te Ching’ and the founder of philosophical Taoism. He is also a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. Alternatively, 'Lao Zi’ also means 'Old Master’. So occasionally, it is an arrogant hooligan-ish way to refer to oneself as an expert or big boss.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 17
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'I’ve book that seat do you understand? I don’t like having people sitting in my seat so stay away from me.’ Closing his book, Chen An tilted his head to send the detestable man beside him an icy sharp look.
But if looks could kill, Ivanov would have died several times every single day.
'A bad temper, a dislike towards people sitting beside him and even those sharp eyes. To be honest, if it wasn’t for my friend’s and your appearance…’ Ivanov gave Chen An a penetrating once-over. With a deliberately disdainful and teasing look, he snorted and laughed, 'The difference is really too much…’
Resisting the impulse to bash the other man’s face in with his book, Chen An gestured for the air stewardess to come over. But before she could, Ivanov had wisely returned to his own seat chuckling.
Chen An didn’t take Ivanov’s words to heart. Even if matters were exactly like Ivanov said: his personality, behavior and even his habits were identical to the past, but with his different looks as well as age, it is more than enough.
No normal person would ever think that he is Chen Zhang An.
Ignoring Ivanov’s measuring gaze, Chen An continued to read his book but his mind had drifted elsewhere. He was pondering the reason as to why Ivanov is heading to Vietnam.
This is China. Ivanov still isn’t bold enough to deal in arms here directly. Perhaps he is working with the military?
But to Chen An’s knowledge, for years, due to the western arms embargo on China, there had been many smalltime dealers who acted as intermediaries to smuggle weapons in to China from the various European countries.
But in the recent two years, China had been advancing in arms development at a rapid pace. The majority of the new weaponry developed are on par and some  even superior in quality compared with exports. Hence, even incidents of smugglers who ignored the embargo to bring in new exotic European models to sell to China had reduced significantly.
But that does not mean that dealings under the table no longer exist.
Should he get closer to Ivanov to find out?
Chen An immediately vetoed that thought. The time isn’t ripe yet.
   Translator’s notes:
*'Tao Te Ching’ by Laozi also known as “The Classic of the Way’s Virtues” or “The Book of the Way of Virtue.” It is a an old classic text that dates back to the late 4th century BC. The text ranges widely in content, from practical advice, universal wisdom to embracing politics. The emphasis is on understanding existence and to achieve an informed awareness of being that leads to personal spiritual tranquility. You can tell that Chen An is really an old man at heart from his reading choices.

It is a really old brand and have accompanied the growth of a generation. I’m a fan of this candy myself and had pissed myself shitless when the 2008 Chinese milk scandal came out. Here’s how it looks like:

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 15
Chapter 15: Revenge must be served
'I'm sorry. I've caused you trouble with my personal problems.'
Upon leaving the police station, Chen An immediately apologised to Ding Sheng. As for the two who just received a beating, they are still inside the station taking their statements. Due to Ding Sheng's unique identity, all he had to do was to clear up some matters and he was free to go.
'Those two fellows got what they deserved. Someone needs to stand up to them and teach them a lesson. If they dare find trouble for you again, remember to look for me.' As a police officer himself, Ding Sheng knew just how useless just threatening to call the cops is.
'Thank you, Ding Sheng.' Chen An had no qualms about acting vulnerable, making full use of the opportunity to reveal some of his unglamorous past.
'I'm sorry I've never told you anything about my past before. Do you still remember how we first met in the hospital? It was after going through some unhappy experiences that I decided to change myself completely and lead a different life.'
Chen An gave a brief account of his past that included how he was scammed by crooks as well as how he tried to take his life when he couldn't handle the setbacks of the deception and his bankruptcy.
'Luckily, I was able to live. I think Heaven wanted to give me a second chance at a new life so much so that they even remove my memories. So all the more, I should face the future with a positive outlook. Those two that we met today belong to the past, so I will forget everything they said.'
Sitting in Ding Sheng's luxury sports car, Chen An allowed him to send him back to Chen Yang's residence, a simple and shabby residential block.
'An, do you need help?' Ding Sheng asked sincerely when he saw the rundown apartment block behind Chen An.
Chen An could hear the message hidden in Ding Sheng's words. Ding Sheng wants to help his pitiful self but is yet afraid of hurting Chen An's pride. Truly, what a kind and righteous youth.
With a quirk of his lips, Chen An replied with a serene but determined smile, 'If there truly comes a day when I need help, I'll look for you. By the way, I'll be going on a vacation overseas for the next few days so I won't be able to go to the gym for a while.'
'How can I contact you?' Ding Sheng asked urgently.
Chen An gave his number to him before asking teasingly, ' Aren't you curious? How is it that I can take a trip overseas when I am broke?'
Hitting the arrow on the head, Ding Sheng gave an awkward laugh. As an active police officer with a high solve rate, Ding Sheng almost have an obsessive compulsion towards the details.
Not only did Chen An have money to vacation overseas, he even have the money to use the gym in the downtown area. Yet, simultaneously, he lives in such an ordinary residential building. But Ding Sheng only had a mild curiosity towards this seemingly good-natured man before him and not suspicion.
'If we have a chance to meet again, I'll tell you. Thank you for sending me back. Goodbye.'
Curving his lips on purpose, Chen An made his farewells and left without a second glance at the young man staring at his back.
He just needs to be ordinary friends with Ding Sheng and nothing more.
As for the next step in development such as becoming closer and more familiar friends, there is no need for that. With greater familiarity, the risk of giving himself away only increases.
When he went up the floor, the smile on Chen An's face gradually faded bfore vanishing completely. When he reached the apartment, he realised that the door was opened and inside, he found Chen Yang pacing anxiously.
'Uncle, who sent you home just now? That car looks really expensive.' When Chen Yang heard the engine purr of a sports car from upstairs, he had looked out of the window out of curiosity. It was to his utter astonishment when he saw Chen An stepped out of the car.
'Oh, he is just a business owner in our neighbourhood. He gave me a ride home because it was on his way.' Handing his bag to Chen Yang automatically, Chen An unbuttoned his shirt as he turned to head towards the bedroom.
'Uncle, are you hungry? Should I prepare you something to eat?' Chen Yang added quickly.
  'No need.'
He is on a diet right now. How can he still eat supper?
When he entered the small bedroom, Chen An sat down and switched on the laptop. He is a petty man. For those who offend him, he must let them know what a huge mistake it was.
On his laptop, Chen An searched the names of the two men he met at the gym today: Wang Hao and Liu Xiao jie. One cheated him of his money that led to his bankruptcy and subsequent suicide while the other, was an old lover who colluded with outsiders to betray Chen An.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 14
Chapter 14: The disturbance  in the gym
Who needs a personal trainer? Ding Sheng, an Interpol agent, is the best fitness coach one could ever ask for. With only a workout tank on his upper body, it revealed his strong and powerful physique. And due to Ding Sheng's partial  Chinese heritage, he looked fit yet not excessively beefy.
In comparison, even though he was much slimmer compared to a month before, Chen An still had far more flabs than muscles. His goal is to just get his weight down to an appropriate level; he hardly dare aspire to attain a figure as excellent as Ding Sheng's.
Losing weight is actually quite simple, here are the words of truth: eat less and exercise more.
But to actually do so, one needs immense strength of will to rely on. Without, one might fail even before they start. Fortunately, a strong willpower is one of the personal strengths that Chen An take pride in.
Taking a break in his workout, Chen An sat on a spinning bike to rest. After drinking two small mouthfuls of water from his bottle and taking a breath, he casually asked, 'Are you going back to America soon?'
'Yeah, I'm going back next month. I'm used to work, so taking a break actually makes me feel restless.' Ding Sheng then asked, 'What about you?'
'Me? I don't know. I'm taking a step at a time.' Chen An returned an awkward smile. Currently, he and Ding Sheng are just ordinary friends. Other than knowing each other's names, they didn't know each others' profession nor ask about each other's past.
Since Ding Sheng did not question, Chen An would not volunteer information.
Continuing his workout on the spinning bike, Chen An pondered. Ever since Ding Sheng joined the Interpol, he had bitten on to Chen An tightly without rest. His sudden vacation now could be because the firearms kingpin Chen Zhang An he was doggedly pursuing before is now dead. So it was only now did he have time to rest.
Not only did he not manage to catch his target, but he discovered that the latter was dead. Ding Sheng must feel not only displeasure but maybe even crushing regret.
'Ha, this gym really allows just any kind of trash to come in here.' A cold taunt suddenly rang near him.
Neither Chen An or Ding Sheng paid any mind as it barely registered in their attention from the start. It was only when he heard his name being called out did Chen An slipped his glasses back on to take a look.
In the near distance were two young men wearing matching couple gym outfits. The one on the left was a little taller while the one on the right was a little shorter. The shorter one had a fair and clear appearance that was appealing to the eye - if not for the acidic expression he had on his face.
'Oh, isn't that President Chen An?'
The fairer youth suddenly gave Chen An a taunting smile. He scanned Chen An slowly and with hints of vicious intent added, 'You lost so much weight I almost didn't recognize you. You still look like a fat pig though, haha.'
'Who are they?' Ding Sheng asked with a frown. Though he and Chen An cannot be said to be particular close friends, but he will never allow anyone to humiliate his friends in front of him.
'I don't know.' It was the truth. It is likely that it was the 'Chen An' of the past who knew them, but regardless of who these fellows are, those who insult him have to pay a painful price.
He had always been a person who keep grudges and enjoy vengeance.
But this was not the right moment to stand up for himself. With narrowed eyes, Chen An gave a sweeping look at the two. He had a good guess as to the identities of these people.
'Chen An, don't you have anything to say to an old friend? Don't you remember who I am? Are the rumors true after all? That after you tried to commit suicide, your brain was damaged and you became an idiot?' Although the pale youth had a relatively pleasing appearance, he had a venomous mouth.
'There is no point talking to a loser. Xiao Jie, lets go to a different gym.' The taller man beside Xiao Jie seem to have absolutely no interest in Chen An. He couldn't even be bothered to spare Chen An a glance, his face only showing impatience and disdain.
'How could a person who just got dumped and lost his career have the mood to go to a gym? Even if Pigsy loses weight, he is still a pig. Why don't you take a piss and have a look in the mirror to see what kind of trash you are?' The youth named Xiao Jie seem to really have it out for Chen An, every line uttered a poisonous jab of abuse.
'Shut your mouth!' Ding Sheng could no longer reign in his temper and yelled. With the imposing manner of an Interpol agent and his large brawny physique, it instantly startled the two men.
Chen An knew Ding Sheng wouldn't be able to contain his anger. Why else would he be known for his righteousness?
Righteous is indeed the term to describe Ding Sheng without any trace of irony.
'I don't know what kind of relationship we had in the past, but I no longer remember you. There is no need for you to belittle me like this.' Chen An decided to insert at the appropriate time.
'Oh my god, Hao Hao*, look at him! At his age, this pig still went to straighten his teeth. This is hilarious! What do you intend to do? Are you going to go to South Korea to get plastic surgery done because you feel that you are too ugly? Cause with the way that you are now, nobody would ever want you! Hahaha!' When he saw the braces on Chen An's teeth, Xiao Jie immediately burst into mocking laughter.
'I told you to shut your trap, didn't you hear me?' Completely incensed, Ding Sheng stepped two steps forward and grabbed the youth's shirt collar. With their stark physical difference, it looked like he was lifting a chicken.
'You - what do you want to do? I don't know you, put me down! Hao Hao, he wants to beat me up! Help me quick!' The little gigolo started wailing hysterically.
Translator note:
* The name of this scamming asshole is Wang Hao. Liu Xiao Jie the cheating bitch calls him 'Hao Hao' because taking one syllable of a person's Chinese name and repeating it is an easy affectionate way of calling someone.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 13
Chapter 13: Uncle, don't you like it?
Chen An wasn't concern about Ding Sheng realising anything awry. Even if he did decide to investigate him, he will only find that 'Chen An' is just a normal man in his thirties who couldn't be any more ordinary.
As for how he would wash the money in his hands clean, Chen An have his ways. Shanghai isn't a place that lack opportunities to launder money and one good example would be betting.
There are people who specialises in collecting winning lotteries. All Chen An had to do was to buy a winning lottery and then claim the money to have an explanation for the sudden amount of cash in his disposal.
Just like normal, Chen An got ready to leave for 'work' after eating breakfast. His cover to Chen Yang was to tell him that he had a job as a security guard in an upscale residential area. This lie also conveniently explain away the nights when he didn't return home.
The crafty fox habitually leave wiggle room in his lies; he also habitually place limited trust in the people around him.
Lu Feng's betrayal is an inerasable shadow over his heart.
'Uncle, wait!' Chen Yang suddenly shouted after his departing uncle.
'Yes?' Chen An paused by the open door as he eyed the nearby youth rummaging through his bag. While he knew Chen Yang is a good-natured kid, he nevertheless still kept a measure of cautious distance between them.
With a small bag in his hands, Chen Yang scampered over. And as though he was feeling too bashful to say anything, he merely handed the bag over to Chen An before murmuring haltingly, 'Uncle, I just got my pay. Please take this.'
'What is it?' Chen An was stumped for a moment. While he knew that Chen yang was schooling, he certainly didn't know that Chen Yang was working a part-time job as well.
He was indeed baffled at first; Why did Chen Yang chose to stay off-campus instead of inside? Was it because it would be more conveninent for work?
'Open it up.' Chen Yang could barely contain his excitement, like a child waiting to receive words of praise, his face held only anticipation as he looked at Chen An.
And in that moment, his innocent and pure gaze reminded Chen An acutely of his brother. Years ago, when they were still making a name for themselves, they often could not eat the dishes of their hometown. So then, in order to make Chen Zhang An happy, Chen Zhang Le would venture out to Chinatown on his own to learn how to cook.
The first time Zhang Le made him a table of Chinese dishes, he had looked at Chen An with the same face of eagerness that Chen Yang have now.
Chen An broke into a startling smile. It has been a long time since he felt such a heartwarming emotion.
He pulled open the bag and removed an exquisitely packaged box. Inside it was a phone. While it wasn't a brand that many people recognize, but for a student working to pay for his own tuition, this phone cost a fairly sizeable sum.
'Uncle, my number is stored inside the phone and the calls are already prepaid. This way, the next time when its too dark and you couldn't catch a bus home, I can come fetch you.'
For the past several days, Chen An had been returning home only when it's late into the night. Chen Yang had been worried sick but he had no way of contacting his uncle. So in the end, he made up his mind and decided to bite the bullet and bought Chen An a phone.
Seeing that Chen An had not spoken a word at all, Chen Yang carefully tested the waters and gingerly asked, 'Uncle, don't you like it?'
Ever since he entered university, Chen Yang had never once asked for handouts from his family. Hence, each day when he wasn't in class, he would be working because other than his tuition and rent, he had to cover his own monthly expenses as well.
Before he was hospitalised, Chen An would often buy food for Chen Yang and on occasion, even stuffed some money to him. Though they did not meet often, but Chen An's kindness had been deeply engraved into Chen Yang's mind.
Now Chen An is in a lurch; not only is he bankrupt but he had almost killed himself, Chen Yang would not abandon his relative no matter what.
'I like it. I like it a lot.' It was rare for Chen An to feel so touched. He could only lament to himself that he had apparently not gone completely cold-blooded as he stepped forward to gently enveloped Chen Yang in a hug.
Patting gently on Chen Yang's back, Chen An asked, 'Would you be eating dinner at home tonight?'
'Yes.' Chen Yang replied instantly without thought.
'Then wait for me tonight so we can eat together.'
Done with the conversation, Chen An took the phone and left. Chen Yang on the other hand, stood frozen at his spot in a daze. He lowered his head and touched the spot where Chen An had hugged him. There was a light sensation of warmth and satisfaction.
Relatives really are the best, Chen Yang thought quietly. In a great mood, he proceeded to clear up the dishes with a song.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 12
Chapter 12: A coincidental meeting with Ding Sheng (2)
As an arms trafficker, bribing the police is part of the normal.
On the surface, those who sell firearms are the wanted targets of the police and governments, but in reality, they are partners. In Chen An's opinion, the kingpins of arms trafficking are actually no different from traders in the market. The true producers and the true controllers are actually the 5 states in the United Nations and not them.
The number of weapons they sell in an entire year can't even compare to the number the 5 states sell in a single day.
But regardless, there are indeed some people in this world that couldn't be bought. Even if they knew the rules of the world, they still held on tight to their morals and principles.
An example would be this young man sitting beside him, Ding Sheng. Ever since he appeared 5 years ago, this Interpol agent with a seemingly bright future ahead of him, loves seeking trouble with Chen An. And neither women nor money could move this man.
'Yes, I heard that the dentist here is really good. Since I live in the neighbourhood, I decided to drop by for a checkup.' Ding Sheng gave the bespectacled, decent-looking middle-aged man a friendly smile. With guileless eyes, he then asked sincerely, 'You too?'
This was the first time Chen An saw Ding Sheng wear such a radiant smile that even carried hints of innocence. One must know that in all their previous encounters, Ding Sheng had only ever presented him with a harsh demeanor. His eyes would glare tightly at Chen An with fire spitting out of them as though he couldn't wait to whip out his gun and shoot down the war monger before him.
Chen An smiled breezily as he pointed at his braces in his slightly opened mouth. 'Follow-up visit.'
'Teeth straightening?' Ding Sheng paused before he started chuckling. It wasn't a mocking laugh; and when this handsome youth laughed he looked very attractive with his eyes curved into crescents.
'There are very few adults in China who would still straighten their teeth, but I feel that this is good thing.'
Surprisingly, the inflexible, stubborn and cumbersome Interpol agent in Chen An's impression is actually a cheerful and lively brat in private. A chatterbox whose chatter won't ceased once it was opened; he even shared his own childhood teeth straightening experience to the virtual 'stranger' that is Chen An.
While he listened, Chen silently lamented to himself. Before his rebirth, he never would have an opportunity to meet this private version of Ding Sheng.
But since he had been given an opportunity to meet Ding Sheng, Chen An didn't mind making such a 'friend'.
'Are you a fresh graduate?' Chen An asked with a natural beguiling smile that he had honed from years of experience. Just a tiny smile is sufficient; a big smile might actually arouse suspicion, especially if the other party is a highly trained Interpol agent.
As expected, Ding Sheng did not notice anything amiss. He smiled as he replied, 'Me? No, I've graduated a long time ago. I'm just taking a break now to visit my father.'
After all, who would suspect a seemingly harmless, pudgy and middle-aged man?
'I have a nephew who is currently in his second year in university. You look around the same age.' Chen An continued smiling as he made used of this topic as an opening for slow conversation with Ding Sheng.
Chen An understood a little of how Ding Sheng thinks and behaves. Towards a wolf who pursues you so relentlessly, you would definitely make efforts to understand them.
Ding Sheng is of mixed blood. His father was a Mainland Chinese while his mother was an American Jew. Though most of his childhood was spent with his mother, but his appearance lean closer towards his Chinese heritage. And as he liked his Chinese heritage, he did not forget how to converse in mandarin.
This fellow have a complicated background. In short, Chen An will not send people to eliminate Ding Sheng; besides, even if Ding Sheng did manage to arrest him, he wouldn't be able to keep him in a cell, so ultimately, it doesn't really matter.
But looking at the present situation, Chen An certainly didn't mind having another 'friend' such as Ding Sheng.
Chen An shot Ding Shen another smile. 'Truthfully, about a month ago, I went through a life changing experience. I want to change and lead a completely new life. So besides straightening my teeth, I want to become healthier.'
'I work out at a nearby gym everyday. Should we go together?' Predictibly, Ding Sheng took the bait.
'Sure, but I've never been to a gym before. Do guide me along so I don't embarrass myself too much.' Chen An was smiling so much that his eyes crinkled, looking exactly like a wily fox whose scheme succeeded.

Rebirth of Chen An: Chapter 11
Chapter 11: A coincidental meeting with Ding Sheng (1)
This is Chen An's job everyday: wake up in the morning at Chen Yang's small rented apartment, eat the breakfast prepared by that kid, then ride a bicycle downtown where he would keep up on current affairs and work out under the guidance of his professional personal trainer in his fully-furnished luxury apartment. Each day was spent with sweat down his back.
This peaceful and healthy life lasted for over a month. Chen An stood on the weighing scale and glanced at his greatly diminished weight. As the saying goes, if you put in the work, you will get to enjoy the rewards eventually.
After a shower, Chen An stared at his reflection in the mirror.
Compared to a month ago, his complexion had greatly improved. Under the regime of healthy food and exercise, his face was also finally beginning to gain some definition. But all that said, this appearance was still far below his standards.
Done with his bath, Chen An don on a set of clean clothing and sat in the study room with his tablet to browse the news. Though he currently have some funds in his hands, it isn't enough to sustain his future plans let alone help him regain his former position.
Chen An lowered his head to read the latest international news; good old America just can't take a break. In the recent years, both indirect and direct conflicts had never once ceased. With the continuous news of war outbreaks in the Middle east and Africa, it really is a constant stream of 'delightful' news for happy arm traffickers.
While he still possess the knowledge of how to obtain and sell firearms, he lack the influence and foundation he had build for over two decades.
Before him, there are only two paths. The first is to start from scratch - but the international scene today is no longer conducive for the expansion of arms trafficking as it was twenty years ago as most of the major shares are already under the tight control of existing firearm kingpins. While it is not impossible to start from the ground up, this path would be difficult. Fortunately, Chen An still have some resources at hand.
Alternatively, he can collaborate with someone.
The only question is, who should he work with?
Chen An can admit that he is a paranoid, controlling and overbearing man. He didn't like sharing his authority or his spoils with anyone; besides, he couldn't find anyone to partner with.
But perhaps he can find a middle ground between these two paths. He would rather work solo, but in times of necessity, he didn't mind working with temporary partners.
He should start small first. Even with just himself, it should be easy for him to manage.
But first, he need to take a trip to the hospital.
Half a month ago, Chen An went to the hospital for braces. Though it doesn't give instantaneous results for his terrible buckteeth, it is the most simple and effective method. Today, he had to go for a check up.
Cycling down to the hospital, Chen An took a queue number before finding a seat. While he certainly could afford a private doctor, but in his memory, he haven't experienced such a mundane and ordinary lifestyle for decades.
While outsiders only saw his immense wealth and power, they didn't know that the price of it was to give up any semblance of an ordinary life. He can never take a casual stroll down the street, because wherever he goes, there must always be bodyguards by his side. There are simply far too many people in this world who wanted to take his life; but be it competitors or enemies, none of them would have ever guessed that his killer would be himself.
Just as he was enjoying his carefree moment of not having to worry about being shot at by hidden assasins, a person suddenly sat down beside Chen An. Without thought, Chen An automatically shifted his gaze at the newcomer who joined the queue - and his pupils dilated on seeing a familiar face.
Sitting beside Chen An was a young man. His simple cotton t-shirt revealed a strong muscular figure that is difficult to see in Asians. His bicep muscles looked powerful and beautiful with continuous defined lines and his neat short hair framed a handsome face.
Chen An's reaction caught the young man's attention immediately. But when he saw that it was just a middle-aged pudgy ordinary civilian with braces and glasses, the sharp look in his eyes faded. He greeted Chen An with a cheerful hello.
Ding Sheng, an Interpol agent with a complicated background, was someone Chen An failed to bribe. He is a young, righteous and irritating fellow.
'Are you here to see about your teeth too?' Chen An isn't a man who like to initiate conversation with others. So under usual circumstances, for him to take the initiative, there is always an ulterior motive.
