My first short film is an official selection!

This film started as an idea two actor friends sketched out together between auditions, callbacks, second jobs, commuting long hours, and failures. We had zero budget, and no crew but ourselves. My mom let us borrow her home video camera. His cousin let us set up base camp at her apartment, craft services in the kitchen and shoot for an entire weekend. Through problem-solving and strong acting choices, we figured out how to make special effects happen. Then during editing, I allowed the film to speak to me. B-roll footage I had taken out in the Mojave desert during a freak hailstorm was added - music from an experimental rock group out of Australia was mixed in - and this story expanded.

I didn't ever imagine the poster for this film could appear on a billboard in  Times Square, New York City. But it did this week. On the first Tuesday of 2022 - nearly 11 years after this film was made.

For all the times I questioned my creativity and whether I was on track, moments like these remind me to stay true to my vision...

I'm wishing everyone with BIG dreams out there who may be going through a tough period to keep your eyes on the prize - never play it small - and let life surprise you in wonderful ways!

Playtime is always more fun when you get to work with talented @johneffofficial. 💟 Loved diving deep into #characterstudy for a month-long prep before filming our scene from the famous, “China Town,” which we read in full before our scenes were given to us. Learning how to ride turbulent emotions yet stay aware of objectives while also carrying out specific actions with blocking - that’s the part we’re not supposed to show. When you see great acting on screen , it is never just the #actor who creates it. Until I worked in this industry, it was not clear to me what that meant. In other genres, like stage, this connection may not be as significant. But it is this key difference which has created, and deepened, the historical contention between talent and crew in film. Leading and supporting actors receive most of the notoriety for a film, because their faces are at the forefront, while the most vital players off-screen receive little recognition for their role in allowing this creativity to shine. While this perception is very difficult to change, in more recent years, high-profile directors are more recognized by audiences. But no matter the budget-level, #filmmaking is a #team sport, each unique player vital to its’ success. The relationship between director and actor however is the one in which I am most interested. Because, you see, I have work inside me which must be brought out. Self-directing gets you only so far, in my experience. I started my acting career after I graduated from college and always worried needlessly about my age. I have worked and will continue to work as as an actress, because I have a belief similar to Ms. Dowd. If this is any encouragement to late-blooming creatives, take comfort: it's not over until you say it's over.
