In Black and White (a poem for the new year) 🇵🇸

why cant we stop?

why cant we learn?

wasnt it enough?

we learned about genocide as

children.

we read the paragraphs outloud

in class.

we saw the pictures.

it was all there captured in

black and white.

we saw the striped pajamas.

we saw the living skeletons.

we saw the showers

and the smoke.

i remember.

no person forgets such things.

not when it is there

in front of you

not when it is there in

black and white.

i remember thinking that it is impossible

for one person to treat another in this way.

i remember thinking that no good person

could see this evil and shut their eyes to it.

i remember thinking that so much cruelty could never happen again.

no person would ever do this again.

no one could close their ears to the crying.

no one could close their hearts to the suffering

no one.

never again.

but then

the helpless were herded

as the heartless levelled

their steal wings

and the bombs began falling.

families

children.

not soldiers.

not terrorists.

people.

i am not a child anymore.

i do not sit and read aloud in the classroom

anymore.

but i have not forgotten my lessons.

how could i?

how could we?

how did we not learn from the horror

that was there

in front of us

in black and white?

a holocaust is a holocaust

and genocide is genocide

whether it is 2023

or 1939

and our choice is before us

in black and white.

where i land is madness.

i am in a cavern. a cave. a cave of madness. pillars of living bone stretch to the ceiling. pathways lead out and in. up and down. there is no difference. no order. everything is screaming. bodies turn to bone turn to stone and all back again blending. all of it archways. columns. road and walls. all of it is twisting and straining. all of it is alive and screaming. all if it wants out. i want out.
