Linus Torvalds famously expressed the opinion that if someone is relying on a bug in an ABI (Application Binary Interface, i.e. the contract between the OS and the kernel), you do not "fix" it, it is now a feature.

I don't necessarily agree that strongly, but I think about that frequently, especially in today's world where the only thing anyone seems to think about is "move fast, break things", no matter how important said things are for some people.

Randall Munroe is obviously taking things to 11, as he often does, to illustrate the absurdities that can result from taking a hard stance on that.

i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.

so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.

Such a great episode, NERV fighting an enemy from the inside, and the nerds from R&D are leading the charge and being the real heroes for once.

We also learn a lot about Ritsuko's backstory, and her complicated relationship to her mother during that episode.

Continuing with my incipits series, here's one I really like (no secret there if you follow me):

I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module, but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don’t know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure. (All Systems Red, Martha Wells)
