Book Review - Gone by Lisa Gardner

Hello Lovelies!

So, I've avoided the pandemonium that is Christmas and New Year as much as possible.  Largely for personal reasons.  My nan, uncle and best friend were lost this year, all to cancer, so as you can imagine, I've really not got very into 2019 and all it's festivities.

My favourite way to ignore the world is to hunker down with a cup of tea, in my favourite mug, with my favourite PJ's and my favourite blanket and read.  I was recommended this book by someone I call my book twin.  If she tells me to read a book, I know it'll be a good one.  She's not failed me yet, and this is no exception.

I should point out, firstly, that this is (I think) book 5 in a series, but, it works just as well as a stand alone.  I know some of you love to read everything in order and if that's the case, ignore this post and start from the beginning!  I read the first in the series and I can tell that they're all going to be blinders!  This is the blurb:

"For ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, it's the beginning of his worst nightmare: a car abandoned on a desolate stretch of Oregon highway, engine running, purse on the driver's seat. And his estranged wife, Rainie Conner, gone, leaving no clue to her fate. Did one of the ghosts from her troubled past finally catch up with Rainie? Or could her disappearance be the result of one of the cases they'd been working - a particularly vicious double homicide or the possible abuse of a deeply disturbed child Rainie took too close to heart? Right!  About the book.  So, be warned, I read this in one sitting.  It's a page turner, that's for sure.  It's also full of suspense which keeps you guessing right til the last page and it also keeps you up until the early hours of the morning, because, simply, there just isn't a good place to stop. 

A lot of people I know try and guess the twist or the whodunnit, but I do not put myself into this category as I just want to read.  If you're in the troupe who want to guess, I still don't think you'll get it.  It's epic.

The writing style is excellent and perfect for a mystery/thriller/crime.

The characters:  They were brilliantly constructed.  The panic and distress from Pierce wasn't overwritten as can be the case in such books.  Rainie is loveable and Dougie is just a messed up kid that needs someone to love him.

The only thing I will say is, Lisa over uses the phrase "in the good/bad news department" which irked me somewhat.  This phrase is put into the monologue of at least 2 different characters and also in the main body of text, too.  Otherwise, an excellently written page turner with great characters, twists and suspense.

A track to nowhere

I was feeling really cooped up in my tiny lil flat last week.  The rain seemed to go on forever recently, and every time the clouds parted, I knew it was only a matter of time until the heavens opened again.  With this in mind, I limited myself to exploring my village armed with my camera, iPod, and a brolly, and this is what I found. 

I knew it was there, of course, you could hardly not notice it, but with the autumn rusty colours of the hedge giving way to the final greens of the year, and the tracks littered with golden hues, I actually ended up enjoying my walk...and this photo.

Needless to say, it hammered it down before I could get home, but at least I got a decent photograph.
