I feel like folks talking like Tumblr is the last bastion of reason on the Internet are forgetting that the owner of Tumblr is demonstrably cut from the same cloth as Zuckerberg and Musk. Tumblr's moderation polices aren't less bigoted, they're just less competently implemented.

So many people are making TikTok out to be some wonderful “safe space” which has had positive effects for minorities. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Almost all social media - including TikTok - boosts controversial content because it gets more clicks, which gets more money. The people running these sites are actively promoting hate against your communities for the sake of profit - they are not your friends and TikTok is not a safe space nor has it had a positive effect. It has just pushed people further to the right or groomed young kids into bigoted views, while redirecting otherwise leftist people into believing that posting infographics on your story makes a difference in the world. This is without even mentioning the proven negative effects it has on developing brains and the swathes of misinformation. TikTok, Reels, YouTube shorts and all the rest are not forces for good and the world would benefit from tighter restrictions around them.

HOWEVER, this ban was not implemented out of concern for minorities or young kids - it’s either an act of censorship, or a publicity stunt for Trump to gain more supporters, or both. A ban on TikTok done carefully and for the right reasons is not a bad thing; this ban on TikTok and what it signifies is.

On a related note, a lot of people have been struggling with withdrawals from it. Social media addiction is not taken seriously enough, and as a result a lot of people have been being at best unhelpful and at worst enabling by giving alternative short form content sites or claiming certain feelings are normal. Crying/grief, feeling like there’s a void in your life, being unable to carry out tasks you would otherwise be able to, intense mood swings, and physical pain are all signs of addiction. If you’re experiencing any of these, please please please try and seek help for it. There are resources out there!

I think part of the reason people are so bothered by the rising number of outspoken celebrities (aside from misogyny) is that over the last few years everyone has become so used to being spoon fed the most palatable and uncontroversial stars who are pr trained to the point of their whole personality being overhauled.

Seeing real people having opinions in the public eye IS jarring, but that’s not a bad thing. It means we may see people moving away from the sanitised celebrity images meticulously created by labels to appeal to as many people as possible, giving artists more freedom/confidence to do their own thing. Yes, these people will make mistakes, but that’s a normal thing! Celebrities are people! And if all it takes is an occasional awkward interview or fan interaction for people in the public eye to start speaking out on issues that affect real human lives, I think we’re taking a step in the right direction
