I only recently learned that apparently comparing an artist oc to another character is considered rude and/or offensive to a lot of artists

I always loved it when folks compared my oc’s to preexisting characters; I found it so insightful and interesting to hear how others interpreted my oc’s and felt flattered that my work reminded them of franchises they enjoy (and I still do). I also assumed having your oc’s compared to widely praised and professionally designed characters would be considered an honor.

However, I can see now why some folks find it offensive and insulting.

I’ve seen artists say that after working so hard and putting so much time into making their oc’s unique, having their oc’s compared to other characters makes their own characters feel less original. I’ve also seen artists get upset when folks compare their oc’s to characters the artist doesn’t personally like (I.e Hazbin Hotel or popular anime characters) or just characters the artist doesn’t think look at all like their characters

I understand that not all artists feel the same way I do, but I didn’t realize just how many artists find comparisons so annoying and insulting until now. I really needed to get my thoughts out here and would love to hear more opinions and thoughts surrounding this.
