It's been a while since I've painted and even longer since I've painted specifically in acrylics. I'm making some awkward uncharacteristic decisions (like why did I mix molding paste with some of my colors!? I don't know maybe I'm not thinking clearly?) Nevertheless aside from the challenge of working with a growing and blooming still life subject I am really enjoying the subject matter. Studio update: after moving last week and getting the downstairs of the house functional, I am beginning to work on getting my studio ready. There is a rather dark and distracting orange color on one of the walls and the ceiling that I'm working on painting over with my favorite light grey. There is also a ceiling fan that we are going to remove so I can stop hitting my head and other objects on it. One day I daydream that we will vault this ceiling and install skylights, seeing our attic is more of a utility crawlspace and not functional for storage or secret rooms. :) But that is a far off daydream and for now I can paint the ceiling and do whatever I want, even rip out carpet if I decide, because this place is ours! Because these are now my weird orange walls to cover and this is my scratchy carpet and below it lay my mystery floors which await discovery. Are they bare? Are they old linoleum? Are they forgotten hardwood? I began painting over the weird orange color in the part of our new house that's to become my studio. It's nowhere near complete but these small actions paired with leaving keys to our past rented spaces behind are helping to drive the reality in, that I will never enter those spaces again. As we draw closer to finalizing the move and cleaning our old spaces and handing over keys, I use quiet moments to review old photos. This is one of my favorite dog portraits I did from a photo I took for a friend when I was in college. I've long since abandoned the subject matter partially because when it came to commissions, I found it difficult to work from other people's snapshots, but I still remember how much fun I had getting wrapped up in the details of this painting. . . . Changes are "afoot," the studio at it's current location is closing. I will be focusing solely on my work (no more workshop attempts or costly open house events) and getting my web presence updated after the studio is moved and the metaphoric dust is settled.
