Unlike their previous owners, Thanos is able to harness the stones’ powers on a completely different level. “They’ve been misused by people who didn’t understand their true power”, Co-Writer Christopher Markus says. “And now that the real master of them, Thanos, has shown up, we can see what they actually do. And in essence, his goal is to rebalance the universe, which means getting rid of half of the population of the entire universe. That’s difficult to do planet by planet, which is what he’s been doing as a warlord for many years. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal […]”.
