Summer Site Coordinator ✔️
I survived 6 weeks of summer school “administrator” life. I enjoyed it! Surprisingly. I thought I wouldn’t. But it was pretty dope.
I do think I would enjoy being a curriculum coach now. The best part was being able to visit classrooms and see how other teachers work. I now have an arsenal of new strategies to implore this year thanks to my summer experience.
Also... I’ve got an even larger appreciation now for our reading specialists and math interventionists. Not that I held them in a low regard previously, because let’s face it, they help our struggling babies gain the foundation they’re missing. What I didn’t realize before though, was that while doing so they have a stupid amount of tracking and paperwork they’re required to turn in.
The biggest struggle was transportation. That affected student attendance, parent satisfaction, behavior and classroom instructional minutes. That along with prior communication with parents regarding how summer school works are the biggest things I would focus on before hand if I ever have the opportunity to do this again.
I’m so appreciative for the experience, the great teachers who I had the pleasure of working with, and the trust in me many of my students had which convinced them to attend even when they weren’t required to do so.
Now to get this 9th/10th/11th year in education started as a classroom teacher ( depending on how you look at it)!

Week 1 Almost Done
Whoo child. I’m almost there. One more day. It’s been a whirlwind! Lots of good times: conversations with parents happy their kids have options, chats with kids about what they’ve been inventing in class, dance programs they’ve written computer codes for, or teachers they love. I have awesome teachers working with me this year that have already created game plans for loving on some of my regular key players...On the other hand, I think I ever want to be a principal for a regular school year. THERE’S SO MUCH STUFF. Emergency plans, transportation issues, scheduling classes, ordering supplies, making copies, ensuring supervision of students...my goodness. It’s overwhelming. Honestly I think making sure students had transportation to and from school has been the most difficult thing to figure out. Today was the first day I felt like things ran smooth-ish...and that was with a bus breaking down taking kids home. Lvbs. We’ll see what happens next.

Journey through summer school as a site coordinator
Tomorrow morning is my first day of summer school for 2019. It’s my 8th year in a row working summer school, but I think I’m the most nervous I’ve ever been because I’m not teaching. Being the individual “in charge” fills me with butterflies. Orientation with my staff (it’s so weird thinking/saying I have a staff) filled me with anxiety last week but I think it went alright, I was prepared but I didn’t feel prepared and that’s the same feeling I have going into this first week. I hope it goes well!

Do you think it’s possible/plausible to maintain or enforce the rule in a classroom that kids aren’t allowed to say “you can’t play” to other children?

Empathy is powerful. The question is how do I as an educator and parent help develop the kids in my care into empathetic individuals? Quite honestly I know a lot of adults who aren’t empathetic at all. It’s makes a huge differences regarding whether or not I like being around them.

Failed at bedtime tonight
9:23 all we’ve done so far is dinner and Juice is in the tub now. However we did have swimming lessons and he had extra play time outside with daddy and the ruff ruff’s so we’re not upset. Just have to get better at starting earlier.

Yoga as a part of our (his) bedtime routine. I have to do better about continuing to be productive after I put him  to bed. I do such a great job when I follow through with the schedule that I get sleepy too.
