Residency Update
Hey everyone! Long time no write (like since PGY1).
Just wanted to let everyone who is still here know... I'm about to be a PGY5! And I have matched to an AMAZING laryngology fellowship! So after chief year, I will be specializing in voice, airway, and swallowing disorders. I'm so excited about finishing up residency and moving forward with the next phase of my career!
I'm hoping to be more active here again, but I have to be careful because Duke has pretty strict social media rules.
#if you really want to keep up with me#follow me on insta#way more active there#laryngology#otolaryngology#ENT#shENT#fellowship match

How do I find research opportunities?
You ask. You ask everyone.
Email the secretary of the department you’re interested in and ask her if there is a summer research program for students. You’ll get put on a mailing list. Maybe you’ll find out about a meeting scheduled for the next week that you didn’t even know about.
I met the president of the ENT student interest group. Asked her if she knew anyone doing laryngology research. I immediately got a name and an email address for a 3rd year resident doing research. Sent the email asking if she was working on anything. Accepted to the project. Cake.
Met a fellow when I was shadowing. Updated her on my Step 1 score and she immediately started giving me tips and followed it up with the name of a doctor here at my institution in pediatric ENT that she did residency with. Told me to look her up and ask her about research. Just sent out that email.
If you’ve really got guts, email the head of the residency program at your school. Tell them you know research is important for matching. They’ll hook you up with residents and you can churn out case reports for them.
So many times you guys ask me “How do I get involved in XYZ?”
The answer is that you just go for it. You talk to people. You insert yourself where you need to be. No one is ever going to get mad at you just for asking. The head of our residency program actually complimented me on going out of my way to find extra research to do. Seriously.
If you want an opportunity, just ask for it.

Okay, here is a version of my Step 1 study schedule that will actually enlarge when you click on it so that you can read it because that might actually be important. I’ll link this to my first Step post.

Interviewing for residency at Duke (not ENT) next week. Any tips for duke specifially? It’s not my first interview for residency.
Nah, i didn’t do anything specific here that i didn’t do anywhere else. Just be prepared to ooh and awe over the gorgeous campus if they take you around on a tour (and dress like you might go outside!). It’s a pretty academic place, so showing interest in research isn’t a bad idea.

How hard is it for imgs to get into a residency programme? Thanks
Highly variable. Easier if you want to do primary care, psych, internal medicine stuff. Harder if you want to do a subspecialty. Better chance if your board scores are off the charts. There is never a one size fits all answer for these questions.

What do you think made you stand out in particular to get into somewhere like Duke? (not a criticism)
Honestly i have no idea. I almost didn’t even apply here because i figured there was no way on earth i would get an interview, much less match here. Sometimes it is all about who reads your application and a little luck. There are applicants who were SO much more qualified than me in tons of categories. It just depends on what the program is looking for that year.
