12 hours since I left the theater and I think I’m ready to see Avatar again??
There’s one thing I’ve come to respect a ton this year accross movies I love (RRR) and movies I have mixed feelings on (Everything Everywhere):
Conviction. Filmmakers who 100%, un-ironically believe in the thing they’re making. I don’t even have to like it 100%. But I need the person making it to LOVE it. That’s why I can get in to Mission Impossible AND Little Women and get something from both.
Post 2020 or post Trump or whatever it just feels like there’s no room to pretend. Unequivocally be the best version of yourself because we already have a version of everything else

A week driving around Oahu has me re-examining my relationship with indigeneity.
Born in Canada, I’ve been a somewhat self-aware settler my whole life. But part of privilege is forgetting you have it, and the brutally effective project of Canadian colonialism is easy for me to background so much of the time.
But seeing such blatant, active and in-progress settlement on lands as delicate as the Hawaiian Islands makes the absurdity of it all the more obvious. As much as I shopped indigenous, the market gaps are huge and clear. Much like my home, the barriers to access and commerce are high. And that, out of all the myriad aspects of colonialism, is where my interests lie. Indigenous business that effectively harnesses the power of an interconnected economy to build sustainable community.
It’s not the whole answer. But it’s a big piece of how my own immigrant South Asian community has succeeded in Canada and I can’t wait to push forward some amazing Indigenous “Canadian” and South Asian projects we already have in the pipeline at Dunya. When communities of color can support each other directly, we unlocked much more power than we ever could alone.

Back after YEARS!! Excited to give Tumblr a go again after everything happening at Twitter.
It’s going to take a minute to learn what’s changed. About the platform, and myself.
But a return to blogging, sharing what inspires me, and a friendlier, Automattic-owned platform sounds like a pretty great idea right about now.
For now, I’m off to the Seattle premiere of my new Pakistani-Canadian Muslim sci-fi drama short film.
We’re touring all around in November - DC, Vancouver, Toronto, and Providence RI. Tickets below!

The Good Dinosaur screens with a new Pixar short, “Sanjay’s Super Team,” the “mostly true story” of an Indian-American boy fantasizing about the similarities between his favorite TV superheroes and his father’s Hindu gods. Helmed by first-time director Sanjay Patel, a Pixar animator since A Bug’s Life, it’s a personal story about how he related to his father and his family’s culture as a child. But it’s also a fast-paced, dynamic superhero throwdown, full of Tron-worthy bright, glowing colors and a tremendously effective sound design. It’s sweet and intense, and it treads new ground in diversity for Pixar; it’s everything daring and playful that Good Dinosaur isn’t. Bring on the Sanjay movie.

youtube
It’s here, it’s finally here! Our latest short film, Zoya :)
When Zoya thinks wearing the hijab will make her stay as anonymous as she already feels at school, it gets her more attention than she could have bargained for.
We hope you enjoy it – if you do, please like and reblog it to spread the love– we think we need more stories like this out there!
And if you’d be so kind as to share it on Facebook, we have it uploaded directly there for easy sharing: https://www.facebook.com/dunyadotca

This shot from Edge of Tomorrow really jumped out at me in the cinema as a prime example of how this (now in my personal top 10) film does the chaotic "handheld" style while still being totally comprehensible.
Hey, everyone? Take notes.
