Final project for assemble -23 december
To conclude my study of assemble I decided to make a recipe book as my final piece.
This recipe book would contain an assembling of my favourite desserts or desserts i have fond memories of making.
I assembled these recipes by speaking to people close to me that can bake and also looking back on my childhood and picking ones that meant the most to me.
Page 1 - 🍓Strawberry muffins🍓
My mother writes down all the recipes she knows in a big notebook, she has done since she was little. I remember one of the first recipes I made with her was from that notebook and it was muffins!
Being younger meant i wasnt allowed to do much but i was instructed with mixing all the ingredients and preparing the cases for the batter, that happy feeling you felt as a kid when you were trusted to do something important is portrayed by the little cat doodles throughout the recipe pages. In a sense it is symbolising the childish feelings i felt while making these desserts.
Page 2 - 🍉Hwachae🍉
Making Hwachae was a more recent recipe I discovered over the summer with my friends. We saw it being made on TikTok and instantly wanted to try it as we were having such warm weather at the time.
A mistake i made while making this recipe was scooping out too much watermelon from the bottom which led mine to leaking a little. This led to laughter and a hurried effort to eat the dessert before we wasted anymore!
Page 3 - 🍫Chocolate Cake🍫
I have mixed emotions about my experience making chocolate cake. I wanted to surprise my mother one year on her birthday by baking her a cake i think i was 9 or 10 at the time.
Unfortunately I added extra flour instead of yeast and the cake ended up not rising and being inedible, much to my younger selfs disappointment. but the day was saved when we went to the shop to buy a new cake instead, all was not lost! (I haven’t made chocolate cake since but i do enjoy when my family makes it)
Page 4 - 🍰Cake pops🍰
I will always remember my first time making cake pops. It was one of my best friends in primary schools birthday party. She was having it at a bakery school much to the excitement of my friends and I.
We made a lot of delicious desserts that day but my most memorable would have to be the end where we made cake pops. The teacher challenged us to see who could make the best decorated cake pop and you can be sure that was taken very seriously!
We spent the rest of the day decorating the cake pops and afterwards eating those same cake pops while listening to music and exchanging gifts. It was a great day
Page 5 - 🍞Banana Bread🍞
This recipe is another old favourite of my mothers. Its a page in her recipe book that is very worn with traces of finger prints indented into the pages from use.
My mom made banana bread a lot when we were younger for my dad who loved taking some to work with him and always made sure to bring some extra slices for his colleagues too who loved to see him coming with his tuber ware box.
I remember how delighted my sibling and i would be when he’d bring leftovers home and sneak us some under the table before our supper. It tasted delicious every time!
Page 6 - 🧁Chocolate Buns🧁
This dessert was a treat we’d only see at Christmas and important family events throughout the year. Having a big family of relatives meant having gatherings with lots of delicious foods.
I don’t know if this was only my family or if its a normal thing but each of my dads relations would bring one dessert per family. My mom would bring trifle and cheesecake, my aunt would bring her famous oreo cheesecake and chocolate buns (my personal favourite) my uncles would bring sponge cakes and my other aunt would bring muffins and biscuit cake.
Those gatherings were always so lively and i always left with a few extra chocolate buns in tinfoil curtosey of my aunt who knew id be eying them throught the day. Im getting hungry just thinking about it.
All of these recipes i have assembled myself, through drawing out how their made speaking to the people that made them and being taught how to make them.
Having a collection with so many memories and meaning makes me proud of the work I’ve made and that concludes my final assemble project.

Leon Dabo
Leon dabo was a pivotal American artist in helping to push the ‘Romantic’ sensibilities in late 19th and early 20th century painting into new territory with his beautiful use of spaciousness.
He would paint large areas of the canvas that had little but land, sea or clouds. During his peak he was considered ‘a master of his art’.

Following my study of desserts, when i happened to see one of leon dabos paintings, specifically the 5th one on this post, it reminded me of icing on a cake.
As you can see in the painting it is a scene of the beach that is painted, however upon seeing it myself i associated it with different icings i had seen on cakes.
The smoothness with which he paints the waves, could be compared to the smoothness of icing after a spatula has been used to smooth out any bumps or imperfections on the cake.
I also associated the overall ‘delicate’ look to a lot of his paintings with many desserts. Dessets can also be called ‘delicacies’ and i found the comparison extremely interesting considering how different desserts would be to the beach or any landscape painting.
Another reason i was drawn to Dabos paintings was his use of colour. I love his use of muted colours in a lot of his paintings. Colours that would also be able to see on a lot of desserts.
I particularly enjoyed his use of purples, pinks, whites and blues throughout many of his paintings as those colours are also the main ones i chose to work with when designing desserts.
To conclude i really enjoyed researching Dabo as an artist as although he didn’t paint desserts, finding similarities in his landscapes to that of desserts was a pleasant surprise and thoroughly enjoyable to study!

Osamu Watanabe
“The magic of sweets”
Osamu Watanabe is a prominent artist who has transformed the art of sweet decoration into a captivating art form.
In 2000, Watanabe ventured into a new artistic field that he developed known as ‘Fake cream art’. This distinctive style uses artificial food materials to craft decorative and edible-looking treats inspired by various themes.

Watanabe’s incredible creations really inspired me when i began my search for artists to relate to my assemble project.
I had been focusing a lot on a single theme in my artwork (cake). I realised when looking at Watanabe’s work that it was important to experiment more not only with colours but different desserts not only cakes but ice cream, cupcakes, fruits all sorts of different delicacies.
This helped me when coming to the end of my assemble project as I branched out more, researching how different desserts were assembled, making note of it and interpreting it in my own style.

Animation workshop - nov 25th
I chose to work with polymer clay as the medium for my animation project. I wanted to make a whole cake first and then make a bigger sliced version for the second half of the animation. 🎂🍰
I had more difficulty working with the polymer clay then the regular clay i used in my previous workshops as it was a lot more solid and difficult to shape. However heat from the palms of your hands or radiators helped soften it to be moulded and mixed.
Creating the shape and design of the cake 🎂
The finished cake design. I also finished the enlarged sliced version incorporating the same colours and designs as the original cake.
Finished animation!! 🍽️🍰🎂Its basic as it was my first time animating and using the stop motion app. I encountered a few difficulties but ultimately i really enjoyed the experience.

Continuing plaster workshop day 2 -nov 20th
I wanted to make a silicone mould this time so Using another clay slice of cake i surrounded it with a clay wall to ensure the silicone doesn’t leak.
I measures out the liquid silicone and powder and mixed it until it became pink in colour. I then poured the liquid into the clay mould. I set the mould aside to solidify overnight.
The next day i removed the clay and was left with my silicone mould.
I filled the mould with a clear wax to clean the excess clay from it. And once that dried i removed it and was able to pour in the red wax id chosen for the finished cake.
Finished product.

Plaster workshop - nov 19th
For this workshop i wanted to make plaster moulds of clay cakes id created in continuation with my exploration of the assemble theme.🍰
With the help of my plaster tutor we brought my clay cakes to this machine which melted a plastic sheet to the shape of the cakes.
Once the plastic sheet was formed to the shape of the cakes i filled them with plaster and let them to sit over night. Due to the height of each slice of cake the plastic sheet wasn’t able to transfer all the intricate details of the cake so if i was to redo them i would make sure the toppings of the cake weren’t as high.
The next day i took the plaster moulds out, i wasn’t entirely happy with the way they came out but I’ll have a clearer understanding of how to improve it next time! 🍽️🍰

Clay plus workshop -14th nov
For the second day of this workshop i wanted to create a slice of cake. The point of making this cake wasn’t the finished piece but the journey of assembling everything to create the final product.
I started off with a slab of clay and measured out the sides, top and bottom of the cake. I also used a special piping tool that i used to create border and icing detail on the cake.
In the process of assembling the sides, i used slip to attach the pieces together.
The finished cake, i really enjoyed making the details of this cake and seeing it all come together.
A week later my piece was fired in the kiln and i was able to photograph it properly.
On friday 22nd nov i was able to glaze my piece.
Finished piece🍰

Clay plus workshop -nov 11th
After break we continued our study of ‘assemble’ by creating our cardboard piece out of clay.
I had experience with clay already so i was confident when listening to the lecturer explaining the basics of scoring the clay, using slip etc.
I started with a slab of clay. I then began measuring the same details as i had for the cardboard pencil.
Using the scoring method i scored the edges of 3 of the pencil sides and secured them together with slip. For the remaining 3 sides i changed my design from the cardboard pencil.
Due to clay being more malleable i was able to create a pencil that was ‘peeling apart’ again incorporating the assemble theme in order for the viewer to be able to see how the pencil was created on a much easier level.
Finally i created the top sharpened part of the pencil. I left this part detached from the body of the pencil to make it easier to view and convey further how the object was assembled.
The experience i gained from this workshop helped me in the next few days when i created my main piece for the clay workshop.

Clay plus workshop -nov 11th
Our instructions to start off this workshop was that we would begin by using cardboard instead of clay to not only create ideas for our clay pieces but also get an understanding of what steps we would have to take in order to create our clay pieces.
We were told to bring in an object and take it apart. For this exercise i choose a mechanical pencil and a lead pencil and ‘took them apart’
We then created sketches of the different stages of ‘dissassemblment’ of the object we chose.
After sketching these ideas we moved onto using cardboard to bring those sketches to life.
I started by measuring 6 pieces of cardboard to create the skeleton of the pencil. Then i measured 6 triangle shapes (this will be the part where the pencil is sharpened).
I then drew 2 hexagons for the base of the pencil and the part that connects the sharpened pencil and over skeleton of the pencil together.
This exercise certainly helped my understanding of the creation of both a mechanical and normal pencil and ultimately made me pay more attention to little details in the design of assembling the pencil from both clay and cardboard.

Cardboard workshop -oct 22nd-24th
Continuing with my exploration of ‘assemble’ i wanted to explore how a cake is assembled.
After talking with the lecturer from my peer group the previous week I decided to change my idea of assembling a story to assembling desserts.
I found it would be more beneficial to narrow down ‘stories’ to one specific category so i can focus wholly on that concept instead of focusing on many concepts and not being able to go into as much detail due to time etc.
When making this cake i decided to use the advice given the previous day, to not think too hard on the detail and instead simply create.
The finished piece i made was a lot different to what i would usually make. I used the words of advice given by the lecturers and tried to create a piece that was inspired by a cake but also looked different at the same time.
I left some parts of the cake uncovered by white paper to show how it was assembled. I added this aspect to align with the overall assemble theme.
Overall i wouldn’t say this was my favourite piece to create but it was definitely the least stressful and i enjoyed the freedom that not having to create a perfect piece gave me!

Cardboard workshop -Oct 21st
Today we were given an exercise “disassemble a piece of cardboard then re-assemble those pieces to create an object”.
I had a few ideas going into this workshop of what i wanted to create. However on our first day we were told to forget those ideas and simply ‘create’. I assume this exercise was to give us the freedom to explore creativity in its freest form.
I had originally planned to make a sword out of cardboard you can see this in the above pictures i had cutout the skeleton. However i had to scrap this idea and so as not to waste time i incorporated it in my creation. (I used it for the arch like shape holding the cardboard pieces that look like spikes).
Final creation.

Camera work and lighting workshoup -oct 8th
Today i explored ideas for the theme assemble. I wanted to assemble a love story between two people. I did this using objects that i placed on a projector and experimenting with different lightings and backgrounds.
Through these images i wanted to portray a story of yearning. Hence at the beginning the characters are slightly apart and by the end they are interacting with each-other.
The gradual change in colours going from red to more orange then a light green blue and finally blue is how i wanted to assemble my idea of how yearning/love can be felt.
I ended the story with a blue colour due to it being a colour I associate with peace and happiness and so i choose it for the end where the couple found those feelings in each other.

Camera work and lighting workshop -oct 7th
Today we explored the journey of how different types of lighting, shadows and materials can dramatically alter the mood of a photograph. I experimented with natural and artificial light, Different fabrics and materials, learned how to manipulate shadows to enhance different features on the subject.
Our first task was taking a passport photo. We then expanded into more creative options, exploring unconventional techniques and compositions to push the boundaries of traditional photography.
I particularly enjoyed experimenting with different lighting how even the shadows can alter the ‘atmosphere ’ of a photograph.

Once we had the building of our structure completed it was time to paint. We wanted to incorporate two colours into our design inspired by the gazebo in peoples park.
We used masking tape to cover the areas that would be painted white and then once they were secured we brought the piece to the drying room where we spray painted it red.
Once the red paint had dried we removed the masking tape and began painting the rest of the area white.
