Hi Amanda! Do you think that with all the experience voicing Ragatha and interacting with Ragatha fans, you're kind of absorbing parts of the character into yourself?

As actors, we always put parts of ourselves into the characters we portray, it's the nature of the job. I'd almost say that through all this, every time I record, she gets more of me absorbed into her.

Do you have a certain routine that helps you get into character before a VA session?

It really depends. It's not uncommon to book on a project, particularly on a game, and not know who you're playing or how many characters you're playing until you get in session. You often don't see the script either. There is a lot of cold reading involved. When that's the case, there's not really anything you can do to 'get into character'.

But for reoccurring roles, the engineer will typically play ref (a voice sample) of what you've done previously to help you get back there at the top of the session. Or sometimes you'll develop a trigger phrase that helps put you in the right vocal and emotional space, much like you would do with accents.

After a while tho, the character kinda just lives in a place you know how to get to very easily, so you don't always need it. It varies from person to person tho!

What I focus on most before a session is vocal health: warm ups and other habits that help protect my vocal chords long term.
