Week 13 - Reflection
Over the past 12 weeks of class and lectures for Grad 505 I learned a lot about the different design movements, I wasn't able to study art history at high school so outside of the research I did in my spare time I had no real knowledge of many of the design movements like Bauhaus. The lectures within this course allowed me to learn the 'intro' to each movement like the Bauhaus which was very interesting to me. Research and writing essays was a familiar concept to me as I had to do it in the past in high school as well as referencing my work in APA. However, I have never written an essay about design or relating to any art before so it took me some time to figure out what to write about and the structure. This became my biggest challenge so I ended up discussing my confusion with my tutors who guided me to stick with one movement (Graffiti or punk) rather than trying to talk about the two. Their advice was helpful and I was able to start writing, once I had begun writing it wasn't that hard to finish. I also found I enjoyed the actual research process a lot, particularly reading the books. I may have gotten lucky with the books I found at the library, but particularly 'The Graffiti Subculture' by Nancy Macdonald was something I really enjoyed reading and found enlightening. Although I wasn't talking about masculinity within my work, I found it to be interesting and for sure became a part of the context I was working with.
I also acknowledge that I was biased in my essay, but as we were urged to present an opinion or argument and not recite facts, some bias was going to be present. So although my work is biased, I have used evidence and quotes from actual graffiti writers to back up my claims.

Week 13 - Handing in
This week we didn't have any class so we could work on our essays in our own time. I submitted my essay to see what my plagiarism score was, I initially got 22% until I changed the setting to not include any quotes or the bibliography, and my percentage changed to 1% which was okay.
After that I ran my essay through Grammarly to pick up some grammar mistakes before I read it one last time - once I fixed up all my grammar mistakes, I tried to format the document so it looked cohesive and once I was done I turned it in on Canvas and submitted my blog link as a comment alongside it.
When I first finished my essay my word count was over 1500, but I spent a while rereading it and cutting down the words and sentences I thought weren't needed, I managed to get my word count down to 1487 (not including captions, references, or footnotes) which was all my titles, keywords + actual essay text.
--
Source Credibility
I've made sure all the text sources and image sources I have used are credible and reliable, to make sure my sources were reliable I only used sources that had information on who wrote it, where they got their information as well as when they published it -- as most of my sources were from the AUT database or other library bases it helped with its credibility, I also cross-referenced and saw whether information across multiple sources matched up, an easy example would be the same quotes being used, or in the case of my journal articles, Nancy Macdonalds 'the Graffiti Subculture' was always listed as a part of their references, and was a source I was reading and found incredibly credible as there was a mix of primary and secondary sources within her book.

Week 12
Essay conclusion and completion (in class and SDL)
This week like last week we were given to work on our essays and ask for any feedback if we wanted any. We used to same 20 min work, 5 min break method we used method last week and I really liked using it I may possibly use it for future writing as well.
My goal for the session was to finish up and fix the work I had managed to do since last week (I managed to do my intro, first and second body para) and start my third paragraph. I was running a little bit more behind that I would have liked because I did end up restarting my essay once I talked to Tatiana in class. I had hoped Tatiana would be able to give me some feedback on the work I had done so far in class but unfortunately my name is at the end of the role so I couldn’t get my turn but I will email Tatiana later in the week to get some feedback if possible.
My word count as of right now is towards the longer side but for now my focus is to finish the essay then at the end I will review my work and delete what I think was uncessary and make my essay for concise .
I also intend to submit my essay as a first attempt to see my plagiarism on turnitin before final submission
For my tumblr blog (also needed for summative submission)
The formative feedback I had gotten regarding my tumblr blog was quite good so I will go through all of the weeks on canvas and double check all my work is on tumblr before submission and fill in any blanks if they are some. I also plan to write some entries about certain sources I have used a lot within my essay as well this week).

Week 11 - Updated Images
I also while constructing my essay ended up changing some of my images/adding some more to better suit my argument
Children Of The Grave Part 2 - DONDI
I decided to go with this image for the first paragraph instead, in my plan I was planning to to use children of the grave part 1, but that image is in black and white and I feel this image illustrates my point better
Ray Gun Magazine Cover by David Carson with Sonic Youth.
Finding David Carson design examples that actually have supporting info like dates, names, etc was quite difficult but luckily I managed to find one with enough information to be able to cite it properly in apa 7
Graffiti Hoodie
I needed a modern-day example of graffiti being used in places that's not a subway station/graffiti typography and remembered a collection from a while ago and knew that off white had done some stuff using graffiti so I went on the hunt and found this image to support my argument, its a photograph of a person wearing graffiti typography
Front cover for Before Today by the artist Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti
I also remembered that is album has graffiti in the album art so I found a version of it online to save and use.

Week 11 - Updated Text Sources
I ended up finding some more sources this week that I could use. As so many of my older punk sources are not that helpful for the essay, I made up for them through the following sources.
THE RADIANT CHILD. - https://www.artforum.com/print/198110/the-radiant-child-35643
This was quite a long magazine article from 1981, that I made into a word document so I could highlight - most of it is about Jean-Michel Basquiat who I have looked into in the past. Although he is relevant to the time era and was a part of the graffiti art movement and NYC art and music scene at the time, he didn't partake in much graffiti typography so I cant use his work or much of him in my essay - however, learning about him sets up the mood and context of what the time was like in that space. However, I did find the following quote which is really helpful in showcasing the opinion of people within the art world " These guys should get themselves design jobs before they get ripped off. Several have already worked their way into the applied arts, where they belong: on record covers, doing the art direction for movies, slides behind Rappers, backdrops for Breakers. Sitting by yourself on a wall is different." --- I plan to use this quote within my second paragraph to help support my argument that the art scene in NYC saw potential and was pushing for graffiti typographies to go legal and monetize.
The Rise And Fall Of Grunge Typography. https://www.theawl.com/2012/08/the-rise-and-fall-of-grunge-typography/
I read through the article so I would be able to compare graffiti typography to David Carson's work. I already knew who David Carson was as he's a graphic designer I have studied/admired in the past so while researching I picked up some similarities between the two, but to refresh my thoughts I looked through this article. I plan to directly quote anything from this article but I will paraphrase some of the information inside particularly about David Carson and his style of work.
Hip Hop, Punk, and the Rise of Graffiti in 1980s New York - https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-hip-hop-punk-rise-graffiti-1980s-new-york
I came across this article while searching for a source that was discussing the interest the gallery/art scene had in graffiti design. This source is an article but is well referenced, has an author, date, and the information within this matches up with the information I found out in the past. I am most likely going to paraphrase some of the information on page two. I found the section where the author talks about what NYC govt was doing to combat graffiti enlightening and useful for my second paragraph- it would set up nicely a scene where graffiti artists would have to use another 'canvas' and then how nicely art galleries and studios fit into that role.
The concise guide to hip-hop music: a fresh look at the art of hip-hop, from old-school beats to freestyle rap
Although my essay isn't about hip-hop and its relationship with graffiti typography directly, they are very intertwined within the second and third paragraph (According to my plan) so I wanted to gain some background knowledge, to my luck this source actually had quotes that worked quite well for my argument. They were quotes from actual writers like Blade, Prime, etc who I had read about in my other sources talking about the relationship between graffiti type and hip-hop and how they think it is far from each other. While the rest of the novel isn't of utmost relevance to me, it was still important as it gave me some context on the world of hiphop

Week 11
In class today we were given the opportunity to work on our essays so there was no lecture, instead we spent the first hour sharing our ideas and then we’re assigned a peer who would look over and review our work. We did this so we could all learn from one another’s work and I was assigned with Emily. We both gave feedback on each others work.
I was told by Emily to keep writing and to perhaps clarify what my main argument is. So after this feedback I took a moment to write what my goal was at the top of my page and what I am to communicate to the reader. After this I went through what my essay communicated and started making changes accordingly to fit the plan I had made last week. I found that after learning that info and looking at my work again I found some mistakes and places I could be more clear on what I was referring to/point I was trying to make.
We then spent the rest of class writing our essays using a writing technique where we write for 20 mins and then take a 5 min active break.
we were also told about Studiosity and Turnitin -- both are sites I am unfamiliar with as I have never had to use them before however, they both seem incredibly helpful. I intend to use both of them alongside Grammarly before submitting. Studiosity is a free feedback service I have access to through AUT and Turnitin is a plagiarism checker that checked all the plagiarism within your work. Grammarly is something I have used before and it was quite helpful.

Week 11
My goal for the week was to gather all the new evidence I wanted to use from the extra material I read last week and make the PowerPoint plan.
I paste the screenshots of my slides down below. This is my new essay Layout and I am going to adapt my initial essay to follow the outline of this plan instead of my old one.
I aim to at least have an introduction, first body paragraph, and the makings of a second body paragraph before class next week so I can hopefully finish it off in class.

Week 10 - Essay topic Update, Feedback + my thoughts/plan
Up until now, I have been looking into the Punk design as well as Graffiti design which was interesting it also made writing/starting my essay confusing and harder. After talking to Tatiana and Marcos, who recommended that rather than talking about both I pick one and focus on it, I am going to write my essay on Graffiti typography and not Punk design. I might later mention it in the essay but it won't be one of the main topics as I was originally planning to. I do think that punk + graffiti as an essay topic is interesting but they are two different movements only bound together by the concept of counter-culture and the physical location --- it would be hard for me to fully capture and explain both movements in one 1200-1500 essay. It would be better for me to pick one and fully flesh that out instead.
I decided to go with Graffiti because I feel like I have found more helpful research and quotes. The books I have read so far as well as articles all took New York as a location into account. A lot of the research I was finding on punk design and zines all centered around the UK punk movement which was quite different from the New York movement. Because of this I also found it hard to explore both topics in the same essay because I felt like I had more conclusive and helpful research for graffiti and less for Punk poster/zine design.
Further, in my formative feedback, I was told that I need to be more concise and details about what design movement I am focusing on, and this way it is pretty clear that I am focusing on graffiti typography.
Since the blog documents my journey as well as research - I will do some more research on Graffiti typography specifically as my essay is now centered around that and not graffiti + punk.

Week 10
As a class we went over APA 7 referencing, I do already know the basics of it but not the intricate details as in high school although you had to reference it wasn't to the same degree as you do in Uni. We were informed of the many websites we can look towards for help if we need it such as massey and the aut website
We also shared what books we checked out from the library with the rest of the class, I presented my book 'The Graffiti Subculture' by Nancy Macdonald as I know more about it and have gotten further along in it. My other two books also seem interesting but I haven't gotten through enough of the content to be able to confidently speak about them. We were then tasked to continue writing and progressing with our essays.
{edit, Since I ended up changing my essay topic to focus on graffiti I didn't end up reading Notes from the Underground by Stephen Duncombe or Girl Zines, making media, doing Feminism by Alison Piepmeier but instead switched my other book source to the book 'The concise guide to hip-hop music by Paul edwards}
At this point I have written my introduction and am finishing up my second paragraph

Week 9
This week’s lecture was about the different Russian Art movements between 1910 - 1930
Key names
The ballet Russes
Revolution 1917
Russian Avantgarde - Futurism
Russian Suprematism and Con strucutivism
In class, we did ‘speed’ dating and shared our initial ideas and essay layouts to get an idea of what the rest of the class is doing and if they can help us with where we r up to. I was told to continue writing and to possibly find more evidence of opinions from other graffiti artists, which I started doing by looking through American Graffiti which is a book I have been utilizing a lot, I used it for my formative and it's a source I've been looking into since the earlier research days. I was able to find a bunch of different quotes from different artists/people.
After this, we were tasked to create a sharable word document and start inputting our plans and possible quotes we want to use into the document. I created my document and added it to teams and then did it for Bruno as well who was unable to do it from his own device (I made the document but didn't edit it after making it). I also popped my link onto the shared excel sheet on Canvas.

Week 9 - SDL
Prepare and/or expand on a draft of the essay - I started writing my introduction + first paragraph
I managed to find 3 physical books from the Art Library.
I decided to keep a system of bookmarking for the physical books, which you can see in the photos below
Some of the quotes I found that related to my topic include [So far I have started reading The graffiti Subculture, so most of these quotes are from that, as I go on I will update future text/quote sources],
Book – The graffiti subculture ‘Youth, Masculinity and Identity in London and New York’ by Nancy Macdonalds
Page 71
Illegal graffiti involves a celebration of the self. An individual writes his/her name and effectively says 'I am', 'I exist'. In this subculture, however, it is not enough simply to 'be', to 'exist'. One must be and exist stylishly. Style is a centrally important part of graffiti. The way you write your name, the letters you use, their shape, flow and form, the colours you choose, all these things go into making a writer’s “style'.
Page 92
What all writers share, regardless of their differences, is a common motive. All of them enter this subculture with an ambition to be the best, the most famous, the most respected, and it is this that makes a graffiti career a 'moral career' in its purest form. All its paths, progressions and purposes lead to one openly recognized end goal; a strong self-concept.
while graffiti may bear its label as 'vandalism', it cannot carry the connotations usually associated with it. Graffiti is neither mindless nor senseless. Far from it. The time, energy and effort that are put in reflect an underlying rationale and serve a clear and coherent purpose. In the past, theorists have linked subcultural activities to issues of class resentment.
This subculture has its own audience and its own agenda, one which clearly questions 'hit back' motives or feelings of 'status frustration. Writers strive to reach their own goals, not other people's.
2 Extra Articles from AUT database
An emerging art world: The de-subculturalization and artification process of graffiti and pixação in São Paulo - https://journals-sagepub-com.ezproxy.aut.ac.nz/doi/pdf/10.1177/13678779211018481
I didn't provide screenshots of all the highlighted pages but I provided some, I decided to look into the graffiti worlds in other places than New York, to see if there were any similarities, after reading this article, it's clear to me that the general 'story' is the same. Graffiti typography gets picked up by young POC men and then they start out painting on the streets until eventually, art galleries become interested in their authenticity, thus ruining the authenticity by buying it out.
Graffiti in China – Chinese Graffiti? - https://content.ebscohost.com/cds/retrieve?content=AQICAHioQh6vaQ1f_660avHqehX5LEStxh3GpqBCg7yJ_AGctQE0JHkEjQzFoIGW1oIONKUNAAAA4DCB3QYJKoZIhvcNAQcGoIHPMIHMAgEAMIHGBgkqhkiG9w0BBwEwHgYJYIZIAWUDBAEuMBEEDC2BYrzrscEYx-_-PgIBEICBmPKpp58pDqq99JzOhPGdtzNoOQFm68eK29WPFl-TbnbFofgD0-zzeBl9V1YRIRe5_3_U3VPQS3EtKcmJRsb3dCKuDhb1Iys1RkMYHagC4_299YIOUhDtmoC_QZW7FMpAfN_vUmYvScCUva_OrY-tyJA-Jj1wLldaqsHecY-6QZ7LFhLjIB5F4Ib-HUNPnDNyRsWjZPTwKYxW
Unlike the previous article, this one actually challenges the idea of graffiti being refered to as just 'writing', the author argues that it should be considered as images instead. THis goes against the basic principle of my essay but I found the arguement intriguing, I am focusing on graffiti typograhy but there is no denying that over time, a lot more pictorial elements have become invovled, esp as graffiti typograhy got in contact with other creative industires. This text, like the last one is not directly relevant to me, there are no quotes I can use to support my essays but it provides me a different perspective on graffiti which is hard me to gain since I have exclusively been looking at american graffiti.

First week back on campus, as we spent 7 weeks plus mid semester break researching it was time to start planning our essays, in class we looks at past essays and analyzed them. We were tasked to identify the argument, counterargument and the evidence used to support both. Through this we would be able to start thinking about the arguments and counterarguments we could write about within our essay and how we could use the research we have collected as evidence to back our claims.
Based on the essays I got to read in the class, I got a feel for what the essay was going to look and sound like structurally. At this point I am still thinking of pursuing my earlier essay topic which was graffiti typography and punk poster/zine design being a propellant of rebellion culture/counter culture in 70s/80s New York.
We were tasked to continue looking at our research and figuring out what information we could use where. I have also written some outlines and ideas in my notebook as I like to plan analog as opposed to online.

Formative Assessment Feedback
From the feedback I received, I was able to figure out what aspects I was doing well in and what I needed to improve on. My blog is well fleshed out in terms of research but to improve and get a better grade I should indicate a clear direction in regards to what design area I am looking into. The images I had selected for the formative were relevant to my topic but it would be better to find images that relate more directly to my overall topic. I should also analyze the relationship between design and society/culture.

To explore and find primary sources to include in our research, we had to choose 2 (or more) options of primary research:
Watch a movie about your era + design period or location.
Visit op shop(s) and bring an object (e.g. a clock, clothes, etc), and/or a design artefact (e.g. magazine, poster, illustration, printed media, etc) and/or a photograph from the period you are investigating.
Visit a gallery, museum or Auckland Library Special Collection and bring a design reference (could be a snap shot of a magazine, poster, illustration, printed media, etc) from the period you are investigating.
Have a chat (like an interview) with a person who lived at the time you are investigating — Or knows closely someone who did.
I decided to watch a movie about my era + visit an Op shop as I enjoy watching and analyzing movies as well as have experience with thrifting or going to op shops as I have gone quite often in the past.
----
Movie name Style Wars , Dir. Tony Silver
Notes, I took while watching the movie:
My thoughts:
What did you find out from your selection that you didn’t know before?
I also only very briefly knew of the other elements to the ‘hiphop culture’ i know two large components were graffiti tagging and rap music however, through this doc I also learnt about b-boying and the many dance styles associated with hiphop culture and their beginnings - the role they play — its not very useful to my essay as it doesnt relate to design but its important bc it helps set the scene/give context.
How it relates to your topic?
It relates to my topic as its a movie made about graffiti typography from the time period Im looking into, its practically a direct look into the world Ive been research into.
What have you found out about your era or period from your choice?
I didn’t know that at the time many people in society believed graffiti would lead to anarchy and that celebrities were involved in the anti-graffiti effort - to my knowledge and from what I had seen so far, most celebs seemed on board with graffiti typgography.
----
These are the items I found from the Op Shop. I went to a couple in my local area but couldn't find many objects that were from my time period so I headed to Panmure and visited a couple second-hand stores, as in the past I have found more success there.
Items Found:
Name: The Premiere Collection: The Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber Type: Record, compilation album Time: Came out in the 80s (specifically 1988)
Name: Bryan Adams - 'Reckless'' Type: Cassete Tape Time: Released in 1984
Name: Pentel, 'Doll up with Pentel watercolor dyes' Type: Watercolour set Time: Unknown, I did try to find some release date for this specific kit online but only found other resellers who also did not include the original release date. From the imagery and how dated the box itself is I can assume it's from the early 70s, possibly the late 60s (the two people fit the 60s hippie look), but I thought it was still a cool find from my time period or an extremely near by one. I won't be including it as a part of my primary sources for this reason.
My thoughts: It was hard to find specific posters, and cards from the 70s/80s ( I kept the time broader than 1978-1983 to help me find items) but I did find that there was a lot more music from the time periods at the second-hand stores. The medium of music was interesting, as it shows how differently people then were listening to music, but the most relevant aspect would be the typography + album art of the albums. The typography, imagery, layout, contrast, etc all show design that was being created then. I did go into the stores trying to find more punk-related music + and stuff but was unable to, I'll keep looking for some in the future. So although they are not punk, they still reflect music/society and how it ties into the design.

We were tasked to find 2 more images for this essay
Richardson, R. (n.d.). CIRCULATION ZERO. CIRCULATION ZERO. Retrieved June 7, 2022, from https://www.circulationzero.com
I found this amazing pdf of old NY Punk magazine Archives (Circulation Zero), I was struggling to find any punk zines specifically from New York as most tended to be from the UK but I have posted some of the images from within it below, this is a pdf made up of extracted magazine posters, from across multiple issues so there's plenty of material and imagery for me to work with. There's also a variety of it, ranging from more typography-focused posters to more imagery-based one. I obviously want to use the type-based posters as I am also looking into graffiti typography so it only makes sense.

We were tasked to find 2 more resoruces we could use in our essay.
The influence of graffiti writing in contemporary typography
Craveiro, D. A., & Carvalho, R. P. (2017). The influence of graffiti writing in contemporary typography. Street Art & Urban Creativity Scientific, 3(2). Complementary Index. https://www.urbancreativity.org/uploads/1/0/7/2/10727553/65_83_craveiro_journal2017_v3_n2_final3_web.pdf
This article is not solely about graffiti typography but rather covers a range of typography and how graffiti typography goes into that. These was no particular quote that stood out to me and I felt I needed to record for future use but as an overall article it was helpful in aiding me fo start making connections between graffiti and the modern world of typography and design. The article does set up some rlly nice introductions of graffiti writing which could be useful in paraphrasing, alongside that it also defines a bunch of other concepts that could be of use to me in the essay like typography, graphic design, legibility. All aspects relating to Graffiti typography.
Value and Validity of Art Zines as an Art Form
Thomas, S. E. (2009). Value and Validity of Art Zines as an Art Form. Art Documentation: Journal of the Art Libraries Society of North America, 28(2). https://digitalcommons.liu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1042&context=brooklyn_libfacpubs
This source js not about punk zines in specific but rather the validity of zines as a whole. It details the print processes and relevant concepts and societal issues. Quotes i’m considering using include, “In a culture that celebrates ease and immediacy, zine makers are choosing to take part in a process that is deliberately messy, inefficient, and labor intensive, they are choosing to take part in an art process." - i think this quote could pair nicely alongside graffiti which is all very hands on. this way I could argue that both graffiti typography and zine making is all about getting ur hands dirty and involving urself in ur works production and execution - could relate it to counter culture and the idea of DIY.
