JOURNEY JUNE 2024 | #JourneyJune24 |
This challenge primarily takes place on Instagram under the account: @journeythrujune
What is Journey June? Journey June is a visual storytelling challenge geared towards artists who want to get better at telling stories. It's based on the classic formula of the Hero's Journey but broken into daily chunks to finish a story over the course of a month. If you finish your story, you earn a FREE PUBLISHING CLASS that shows you how to take your story to the next step and make it into a book!
The official tag for 2024 is: #journeyjune24
Your story tag to find your story later: #jj[story name here]
EXPANDED PROMPTS LEVELS 1 & 2
(Lvl 2 is for those that have finished Journey June in the past. It involves more experience and images per prompt in some cases. Please do not attempt lvl 2 until you've done lvl 1.)
⚔ Hero Workshop: WATCH
OFFICIAL RULES:
🌟MOST IMPORTANTLY🌟
NO PRE-EXISTING CHARACTERS OR STORIES. Make a new test character for this. You can take whatever you learn from this month and apply it to any stories you want after you complete this journey. It's very important you don't have any pre-existing information as it will complicate this challenge.
ALSO, FANART/FANFICS ARE 100% NOT ALLOWED.
🌟GUIDELINES:🌟
1. No combining prompts into one image, but you can have multiple images for one prompt if you want.
2. Label by entry by what day it is
3. If posting online, make your own hashtag for your story AND the main tag for the year ( #JourneyJune24 ).
Format: #jj[insert story title here]
Example: #jjstoryname
Remember, you're drawing SCENES in a CONSECUTIVE STORY. Try to keep characters/outfits/objects consistent throughout.
4. NO RENDERED ILLUSTRATIONS, only sketches or thumbnails. This is a rough draft. We'd rather you do the next day's prompt and get ahead than polish the current one. Save your quality for when you have a solid draft after revisions. We don't want you wasting time and want you set up for the best possible success.
5. Stay close enough to the prompts so we can tell it's the theme it's supposed to be. - They don't need to be any particular genre. Choose whatever you're most passionate about.
🌟BEST PRACTICES🌟
- Choose a small size (under 6x9 for sure). No reason to go big or detailed for a draft. Pro tip: Use a post-it note or ticket stub as a template so you don't have to waste time drawings boxes.
- Can take any form (comic, storybook, etc.) We highly suggest not worrying about panels now however. Just do every shot in a rectangle and figure out panel shapes/sizes after the story is finished.
- Use any medium you like.
- Keep it simple! You'll be glad you did.
- Show don't tell. Who/what/when/where/why/how. Use body language/staging more than dialogue whenever possible. Dialogue can sometimes be a crutch.
- Plan ahead! But if you get overwhelmed, go back to day-by-day.
- If you're going for the free class at the end, make sure you're putting your entries in a place where it'll be easy to send to us or tell us where to find them if they're posted online.
🌟Remember these things and you'll be golden!
"GOOD LUCK!" ~ ❤️ @cloverkin ️☘ ️& @galvosaur 🤖
🌟Let us know if you have questions!! Also, feel free to join @cloverkin or @galvosaur 's Twitch streams for tips and tricks throughout June!!

Hi! I only just learned about this today and am very interested in starting. One question is, it says no pre-made characters. Are we allowed to use a character that we know the design of and a few traits, but not the actual story? Like are we allowed to use this challenge to flesh out a character we've given little-to-no thought to, but is still -technically- premade? Have a good one o/
Not late, nope! Go for it! For the character, as long as nothing you've pre-designed conflicts with the journey prompts you're good to go. Just go into it with the character, genre, and blank backstory that you can develop as you go 👍

*** DO NOT REBLOG THIS PAGE, REBLOG THIS ONE: JOURNEY JUNE LEVEL 1 & 2 EXPANDED PROMPTS MAIN ***
Welcome back, seasoned heroes!
We're glad to see you back again! For the most part the challenge is the same except for a few new prompts, a few rearranged prompts, and we've thrown in some elements that require extra care and attention. This challenge has a lot more freedom than Lvl 1 but also much more planning. Remember to read through all the prompts before starting your story so you can start planning! Don't forget about the Free Publishing Class at the end again. Maybe you couldn't make the last one or you have more questions now. Either way we're here to help and look forward to seeing you at the end of your journey! If you'd like a quick readover of the Lvl 1 Pep Talk, find that here: JOURNEY JUNE LEVEL 1 EXPANDED PROMPTS
OFFICIAL JOURNEY JUNE LVL 2 EXPANDED PROMPT LIST
1. Our Villain - The first shot of the villain in their environment. Typically a far away shot showing the area in which they live/work.
Are they in a spaceship holodeck? A throne? A bathtub? Supermarket dairy aisle?
---Focus on introducing them in a gripping and cinematic way.
Optional: You need not show them fully yet if you choose to keep them a mystery for a potential twist or reveal later on.
2. Villain’s Mark - A close-up of the villain’s objective.
Is it an object capable of doom? Something far off seen in a crystal? A map of where to find a powerful device? A person or creature they desire?
---Focus on showing the villain’s motivation clearly staged in this shot. Typically shown with a close-up.
3. Hero’s Home - A pulled out establishing shot of where were about to meet the hero.
Is it their childhood village they’ve never left? A docking bay for their recent bounty turn in? The inside of a boot?
---Focus on making the audience aware of where the hero is starting and WHY. What is this place telling us about the hero before we’re introduced to them?
4. Our Hero - The first introduction to the hero. Show them clearly and placed in the environment we were just introduced to doing something related to where/who they are.
What are they doing? How are they feeling? What do they look like?
---Focus on what you want the audience to know about them right away.
5. Found Mark - The hero discovers the villain's objective.
Did they overhear a strange conversation? Did they find the item? Did it find them? Were they the one that invented it?
---Focus on staging the hero with the mark showing how/where they found it.
Optional: They could unknowingly discover it or be involved on purpose. Depends on what you want for the hero’s relationship to the villain. Old employee? Family? Fan?
6. Call to Adventure - The hero is met with a decision involving the villain’s mark.
Do they need to return it? Is it dangerous to their village? Did it teleport the hero? Is there a time limit? Must it be destroyed?
---Focus on the hero reacting to the mark and what it requires of them.
7. Answering the Call - Show the Hero’s answer to the call.
Do they refuse or accept the call? Do they want to go or not really?
---Focus on their personality. What does their decision say about them.
8. Journey Begins - (Crossing the Threshold) Gearing up and heading out
What does the road look like ahead? How are they leaving? Are people there? Do they care?
---Focus on saying goodbye/departing in their own way
9. First Obstacle - “Tiny Test” The Hero encounters their first hurdle.
Is it a creature? Is it a structure? Is it a person? Is it environmental?
---Focus on that this is something that tells them they’re no longer in a familiar area
10. Villain Seeks Mark - Cut to the villain. They acquire new information regarding the mark and react to it.
Does someone tell them? Do they see/sense it? Is a clue involved? Do they send a proxy to do the dirty work? Do they head out themselves?
---Focus on the villain’s temperament toward this information and what they do about it.
11. Sticky Situation - Back to the heroes. The Hero comes upon a viscous problem.
Is it physically sticky? Or just a tough situation? Is it the environment? A creature? Is it our Hero that’s in it or someone else?
---Focus on vulnerability. Someone has gotten into something they can’t easily get themselves out of. Whether it’s the Hero or someone new.
12. Suitable Savior - A NEW CHARACTER IS ADDED!
Were they the one saving or being saved?
---Focus on how the characters conclude the Sticky Situation
13. Cooking up Friendship - Our Hero and new companion share a meal
What are they eating? Is it the new characters food? Our Hero’s? What they choose to eat says a lot about them. Do they like it? Hate it?
---Focus on their environment, the mood, and the characters’ emotions.
14. Second Obstacle - “Peculiar Puzzle” - A mental challenge for our new crew
Is it architectural? Is it a riddle? Is it on paper? Is it a device?
---Focus on how the characters solve it. Are they dumb/physical? Smart/calculated? Or just lucky?
15. Magic Mentor - The group comes across a magical mentor who bestows new information and a rare item (ideally for later use). (Traditionally this character doesn’t join the group.)
Did they help with the last obstacle? Were they part of the last obstacle? How will they serve the group?
---Focus on who this being is and why they want to help the group
16. Lost & Listless - The group now in a foreign and unknown area start to despair.
How are they handling it? Freaking out? Crying? Solitude? Comfort food?
---Focus on how a character would react when they don’t know where to go next.
17. Stumbling upon Shelter - They find shelter
How did they find it? Where is it? What is it? Inn/creature/cave/spaceship/house
---Focus on the mood of the shelter & their feelings about it. Happy/scared/weary?
18. Third Obstacle - “Forced Encounter” - The group crosses paths with the villain and/or villain’s proxy.
Was it during their stay at the shelter? Were they forced out? Did they fight? Did they hide?
---Focus on how your group handles the situation.
19. Chased into Exile - The group flees the scene and puts some distance between themselves and the villain.
Is it a cave? An ancient temple? An unknown planet moon? A supermarket stock room?
---Focus on where they’ve been forced to escape to and what that means for their journey. Did they gain or lose anything?
20. Frustrated Villain - Cut to the villain. Show them losing their patience and becoming irritated at the situation.
Are they getting bad news from the proxy? Did something of theirs get destroyed?
---Focus on the villain still not obtaining their mark.
Optional: Show what their idea for the next course of action will be.
21. Distracted & Delayed - Back to the heroes. Just as they’re finding their way, they’re interrupted.
By what/who? Memories? Lust? Intoxication/drugged? Doubt in their quest?
Focus on the Hero getting detoured from the quest
22. Rare Item Returns - The rare item obtained from the Magic Mentor becomes of use in motivating the group to finish their quest.
What does it do? What form does it take? Is it a message? Is it a weapon? Is it a map? Does it teleport the crew somewhere?
---Focus on the item becoming what they need at this moment to raise morale and continue on.
23. Primed & Prepped - Show our group with newfound hope and renewed faith.
How do they look? New gear? New ship? New tech? New bowtie? New potion?
---Focus on their confidence and how the scene is composed.
24. Dungeon Descent - Our heroes begin the final approach into the villain’s domain.
Where are they? What sort of things are there? Is it space? Is it a cave?
---Focus on the surroundings/environment. Where they are within it. Staging and scale is important here.
25. Fourth Obstacle - “Stolen Souls” The villain’s acquired lackies descend on the party.
What are they? Are they ghosts? Insects? Aliens? Robots?
---Focus on multitude. This obstacle is focused on many of something.
26. Facing Fate - Our party confronts the villain (and/or company) without backing down.
How does the villain react to seeing the hero (potentially for the first time)? Is the villain's helper present?
---Focus on composition/mood and how the group reacts to seeing the boss. Scale can also play a big part here as well.
27. Fifth Obstacle - “Boss Battle” A scene of our heroes in direct conflict with the villain (need not be fighting depending on your story).
How is the villain responding to the hero's confidence? Is this an easy/difficult battle?
---Focus on a dynamic scene. Camera angle is important here.
28. Final Blow - Someone deals the final blow to the villain.
Is it mental? Verbal? Physical? Does the villain die? Who does it?
---Focus on bringing the story full circle. Try to reuse an already established story element that would make sense in the situation.
29. Victorious - Our heroes react to the outcome of the battle.
Are they happy/sad/angry? Did anyone die? Do they get anything?
---Focus on the current state of the group and how they feel about their win.
30. The Return Home - We see the hero back at home after the quest has ended.
What does it look like? Has it changed? Who’s there? How does the hero look?
---Focus on them having changed during the journey and how it affects their life going forward.

*** DO NOT REBLOG THIS PAGE, REBLOG THIS ONE: JOURNEY JUNE LEVEL 1 & 2 EXPANDED PROMPTS MAIN ***
Welcome, first year heroes!
Please make sure to read through all of the below before starting the challenge! Especially if you want the Free Publishing Class you'll want to make sure you're doing everything correctly! If you've done Journey June already, you can move up to Level 2! Find that here: JOURNEY JUNE LEVEL 2 EXPANDED PROMPTS OFFICIAL 2024 TAG: #JOURNEYJUNE24 Don't forget to also make one personal to your story to find it easily! Example: #jj[STORY NAME]
Journey June is different than other monthly art challenges.
It's loosely based on The Hero's Journey formula. One of the simplest and most famous templates for storytelling.
Journey June specifically deals with getting artists in the habit of creating a narrative and maintaining style consistency throughout their story. If you're striving to one day make your own stories but haven't done anything yet - this is the perfect start!
This is the official list and expanded prompts. Every day that day's prompt and some helpful info will be posted on the official Instagram account where the challenge primarily takes place. Most prompts are lead into from the last -or- go into the next. So the more you can work in past elements the better!
MOST IMPORTANTLY - DON'T get overwhelmed right now!
If you feel yourself starting to freak out go back to taking each topic day-by-day. Be optimistic, have fun with it, and remember it doesn't need to be perfect! You can always go back afterward and fix anything you need to!
This story will be PRACTICE!
If you finish all the days within the first week of July, Cloverkin and Galvosaur will offer a FREE CLASS on how to turn your story INTO A PHYSICAL BOOK!
Find Journey June on IG|TWITTER|FB as @JourneyThruJune Message us on IG if you have questions! REMEMBER. This challenge is about QUANTITY OVER QUALITY! We would rather you finish it at a lower quality than have a couple days fully rendered. It's more important that you get the story out. You can always go back and fix things later. This is meant to be PRACTICE! So don't get stressed out or overwhelmed. Most importantly HAVE FUN! Duh. 😋
Also, to be able to make your story work right, you'll need to read through all of the prompts FIRST.
There are some that deal with other ones and placing things earlier that will reappear later. It's also smart to have your Hero designed by the time June starts. Make sure you like them and can draw them easily. Stick to simpler designs on this one, you'll be drawing them a lot! Ideally use a completely new character/world. Don't use something pre-existing as you'll feel too much hesitation with throwing them into certain things or feel like this story you make then becomes part of theirs. Not necessary. Remember, this is practice and we want you to treat is as disposable. It's the experience and the journey that will stick with you. If at the end of the challenge (we give you until the first week of July to complete all 30) you finish your journey, you can get a FREE CLASS from Cloverkin & Galvosaur on how to make a book! Because you earned it! So there is a prize at the end if you can defeat the boss and get back home! :) If you'd like a set time during the day to do your Journey June, swing by our Twitch channels and draw with us! We'll have a giant art jam! Thank you so much for doing this! I'm so excited and think this will help me a lot. Ok, question, are we suppose to post our daily prompt piece every day? Where are we suppose to post it? Instagram, Twitter?
Preferably post every day. It depends on if you’re doing it for the free publishing class at the end or just for fun. If it’s for the publishing class, you’ll want to either document it online or eventually compile them all into a pdf. You’ll have to send it to us at the end either way. If you’re just doing it for fun/practice, feel free to post or keep it private. Totally up to you! You could wait til the last days to do them all but we highly discourage that. Our preferable social media is Instagram. We’ll retweet things on Twitter. Tumblr is more of a toss-up. I don’t think we’ll be sharing art on here. The benefit of using a hashtag for a challenge that’s currently happening is finding new artists and them finding you! Don’t be afraid to post your work! You’ve really got nothing to lose! Thank you for your interest!

Hello! I just stumbled across this challenge and I think it is wonderful. Is it just for illustrative art? Or can it also be used for writing? I've been trying to push myself to write a novel and this challenge would be great to use as guide. Perhaps I am misinterpreting it. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to read my question.
Absolutely, go for it! It’s the basic outline for the Hero’s Journey. You might want to look it up on Wikipedia as a reference for your writing. It’s the most famous story formula. We added a couple extra things to make it to 30 days. So feel free! Let others know about us!

0 DAYS LEFT UNTIL #JOURNEYJUNE! ZERO.EXCUSES. If you want to ever be a storyteller, freelance artist, or independent artist, you'll have to learn that there are absolutely no excuses. We hear so many people say 'I've got so many stories!' without having anything to show for it. They Talk-theTalk but don't Walk-the-Walk. This whole challenge is about teaching you how to walk. So that you'll have something to show for it. And that means NO EXCUSES. If you get commissions, you have to do them - no excuses, or people will get mad. For this challenge, we want you to use this to see what it's like to have to rearrange your life to get something done. If you want to actually have a book by July, tell yourself 'no excuses'. That way you've already programmed yourself to know 'I HAVE to do this no matter what'. Then you'll find a way. You'll move days around and do things ahead of time. If you're busy one day, make sure you get the prompt done earlier. The minute you try to think of a reason to not to do something, you're already saying you don't want to do it. In turn, saying that you don't want to produce anything. Laziness will get you NOWHERE and make you NOTHING. Take a risk, put yourself in a hard position so that you can make something you normally wouldn't. Do something so that you can be proud of yourself and say that you FINISHED IT. Nothing compares to that feeling and we want to help you be proud of yourself! Tomorrow is June 1st. And your journey begins... Let us know if you have questions!!♥☘ EXPANDED PROMPTS ARE LIVE! 1 DAY UNTIL #JOURNEYJUNE! SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING! Regarding ANYTHING. When you don't feel like drawing, exercising, WHATEVER - tell yourself 5 MIN and try it. Even if you're just practicing shapes, doodling, linework, crosshatching, etc. If you aren't in the mood still after that, fine. But usually the hardest part is starting. You'll be surprised what you can get done! Sometimes 5 min can turn into 30 and then into hours. Who knows! So even if you aren't in the mood, try it. Just even for a small bit whenever you get a moment. It even works with exercise! I lost 50lbs from using this motto, no lie. Give it a shot! It might work for you! 2 DAYS UNTIL #JOURNEYJUNE! KEEP IT SIMPLE! We can't stress this enough. If you have an intricate character you're going to dread drawing them over and over. At least until you get a few stories under your belt. Remember this is a practice go and to keep your character simple! If you've designed them intricately like the one above go over them either with tracing paper, digitally, or redraw them just including 1 or 2 distinguishing factors. OR try drawing them VERY small, it'll force you to simplify them. You want to focus on story, staging, and mood for this challenge. REMEMBER ONLY NEW CHARACTERS FOR THIS. If you use one you've already worked on it'll affect whatever story they're tied to already and we don't want that. We HIGHLY suggest making a new test subject for this journey. hello, I just saw this challenge recently and would like to ask if our pieces for each day need to be several panels or if possible just one? And also, do we need to explain our story in the description? Thank you for answering! I'm very excited to join as someone who wants to create a story someday!
It can be whatever you want. If you want one illustrating let prompt, awesome. If you need panels to get across the action or made, awesome. It might help to supplement your post with some flavor text for people just stumbling upon your stuff, but still, up to you! We only care that you get all the days done (quantity over quality), you don't use any existing characters/stories, and you focus on storytelling and not so much on rendered illustrations. Hope that helps! Let us know if you have anymore questions! ♥️

I’m trying to become a writer or at least become well acquainted with the art form. Are there any accounts that you would recommend for story telling and any books you would recommend?
Anything by Joseph Campbell. How to Write Science Fiction/Fantasy by Orson Scott Card. Look into Story Forge cards. They can help a lot. I’d also maybe try your hand at our challenge coming up in June and apply it to writing. For the prompts check out: bit.ly/jjprompts Hope that helps some!

Can we go digital or is it only traditional art?
You can do it however you’re most comfortable! The advantage to traditional is you’ll always have something you can sell! But if you aren’t an independent artist yet that may not be as important. So really, it’s however you know you’ll be able to complete all the prompts easily. That’s the most important thing. You can always go back and polish stuff after June is over. We just want you to get that story out! :D

Do these piece need to be in ATC size/form? Or any?
It's whatever you find easiest to be able to complete the challenge. We stress more on quantity over quality. I'd recommend working smaller than 6x9 for sure if this is your first story.
