Something about the indirect parallels between Barry and Hal just makes something in me itch. Both watching a parent die and stagnating in that moment, having to decide who they want to be for the rest of their lives. Hal following Barry into death and Barry following Hal into life. The sky frees Hal while the earth grounds Barry. Hal’s resurrection being a moment of triumph. Barry's resurrection being a moment of defeat for all he sacrificed. Hal accepting his status as a sinner while Barry rejects his status as a saint. I'm losing it.

HELLO ANON AND THANK YOU FOR THE ASK!!! I love that people actually enjoy some of my takes on the characters!! I’m currently branching off to some others like Booster Gold and Blue Beetle so I might start posting about them as well!!

As for Hal wearing his jacket, I have SO many thoughts about it that I’m working on a long post about Hal and his father because it genuinely fucks me up in so many ways. The only way that I can put it is that Hal tries to be his father, or at the least embody who his father was because he never quite learned how to separate himself from his father. I think about Hal risking dying like his father daily, it fucking ruins my life. Hal clutching to his past in the form of a tattered jacket even while he tries to run away from it is just, so poignant on how he deals with everything in his life.

I find it so funny that the GL and Flash friendships run through three generations and might go for a fourth if Keli becomes friends with Ace and Irey LMAOO, I cant remember off the top of my head if they’ve all interacted yet though. I find it so funny that this expands to the GL and Flash fandoms as well because so many of us are extremely friendly with each other and very often are fans of both because of how much the characters interact!! I dont interact much with the Arrows and still need to catch up on my reading for them, but I adore the Arrow and GL friendships and the community surrounding the Arrows are so sweet as well!!

Hal and Bruce are friends and it’s so funny to me when people act like they despise each other, because they dont, they just fight because their fighting styles and personalities clash frequently. They actually get along very well and enjoy each others presence!! They just like ribbing on each other, but they frequently make reference to how much they respect each other. I’m pretty sure the animosity was retconned to always being there in the 2003 GL Rebirth? Which has its roots in how Bruce became extremely distrustful of Hal after the whole Parallax thing, which I’d argue actually caused Bruce to develop his contingency plans!! It’s not explicitly stated, but Bruce developing them right after Parallax and the fact that everyone refuses to talk about Hal in that comic is very telling. There is so much interesting story ideas with Bruce and Hal fighting, but its long since become stale for me lmaoo.

They’re friends!!!! Buddies!!! Comrades!!!! Stoping acting like Bruce is better than them!!! Those are his friends!!! Also theyre friends with people other than Batman!!!!!

The fact that I know this is specifically about the fanon batfam, but this is a DC comics WIDE thing like literally nobody ever fucking acknowledges that the League are friends!! The OG JLA are VERY good friends!! THEY ALL USED TO HANG OUTSIDE OF SUITS TOGETHER!!! THEY CARE SO MUCH ABOUT EACH OTHER!! Hell I was reading JLI international because I was procrastinating on that and when Hal pops up he threatens Maxwell at even the possibility of him putting the League in danger. At the very least Hal considered them family, with J’onn fully considering the JLA his family, the rest of the League toeing somewhere in between — and that’s not even mentioning the individual friendships formed. Supes and Bats, the trinity, Hal and Barry, Bruce and Barry, J’onn and Clark and so on. They are FRIENDS and it’s sometimes so infuriating seeing people not acknowledge that and pretend that they’re coworkers at best, which even DC is guilty of.

Bruce is fully aware that many of the League members are much more powerful and skilled than he is, and he fully trusts them to do what they need to because of that. Bruce doesnt think himself better than the JLA in any capacity, why both fans and DC pushes this idea that Bruce is a smug asshole who knows better than the entire JLA is beyond me, part of the reason why his dynamic with the JLA is so intriguing is because he KNOWS where he falls short and trusts the JLA to fill in for him!! Like he does for them!! Because thats his FRIENDS!! They’re a TEAM and Bruce is the tactician, he coordinates stuff, but he doesnt own the League nor is he the sole leader like people think he is, the leader role rotates to whoever is most qualified for the situation at hand, and most of the time it’s J’onn thats the leader.

The lack of Jimmy Olsen in Superbat fics is very telling sometimes LMAOO.

The first like 15 pages of Hal’s tag on AO3 isnt even about him LMAOOO it’s all batfam with one ☝️ fic thats maybe about him per page. This trend extends to every single DC character ever been conceived outside of the batfam. It is dire.

Guy is a D1 rage baiter that Jason could only dream of becoming by the way he gets under Bruce’s skin.

But yeah they were always like that. In JLI Guy was in his peak ‘Exaggerated Macho-man’ characterisation and had a habit of punching up to people leagues ahead of himself, which includes Bruce, who could not stand him because of that and Guy's self-aggrandizing, crudeness, disrespect for both authority and his peers personality. He was probably considering breaking his no-kill rule just to rock Guy’s shit. Guy was pushing all of Bruce’s buttons and when he challenged Bruce to a fight, Bruce took it and swung and knocked him right out. Dinah was devastated that she missed it, it’s fucking hilarious.

In the comics Bruce very much does respect the Green Lanterns and what they do, he just sometimes gets into fights with them because they’re all stubborn as fuck, but he does get along with most of them — except Guy, but that’s Guy. Bruce and Hal are very much friends, they just fight because of how differently they function in fights and occasionally their personalities clash, but outside of that they do get along and have a very good friendship!! Have since the 60’s, the animosity occurred after Parallax and has since been implied to exist since the start of the JLA in GL Rebirth I think? Point is Bruce DOES respect the Lanterns!! He just struggles to get along with some of them sometimes, and that’s mostly Guy, and sometimes Hal if they have their once in a blue moon team up.

I don't know much about the live action adaptations. I saw the Battinson film and some of the Dark Knight but turned it off because me and my dad wouldn't stop laughing at the Batman voice, comedy gold. I've seen some of Snyders JLA, so maybe that version? He seemed to get along well enough with his other teammates. No clue. Though, Adam Wests Batman would LOVE the Green Lanterns, they’re slapstick in a way that would mess AMAZINGLY well with his character.

Funny thing is I haven’t engaged with the batfanon in so long that I dont really know his and Barry’s fanon dynamic well enough since it usually jumps all over the place, but I’m assuming you’re referring to how the arrowverse characterisation leaked into the fanon side since they think that universe is a good rep of the characters LMAOOO. I actually did do a surface level explanation of Barry and Ollie’s comic relationship in this post, and how they did eventually become tentative friends, but I doubt batfanon knows all of that.

Depending on how the two are characterised, I’m not too fussed on how they’re portrayed as friends since it has its roots in canon and a potential friendship has SUCH fun stuff to play with, but from how batfanon usually portrays the two, they probably do it by characterising them both as ‘Ollie is an asshole moron who cant form a coherent thought to save his life’ and Barry as the ‘bumbling idiot who needs everyone to hold his hand’ I can just imagine how infuriating that characterisation is as a GA fan once put in conjunction with how they portray the batfam as whatever the hell that is. I can sometimes defend mischaracterisation since fanon is just a vehicle to explore separate ideas from the main canon, that’s what fandom is all about and you can never truly get away from it, but doing it to prop up the batfam while demeaning characters incredibly important to the batfam is something that just personally gets at me LMAO since I adore their outside relationships!! They’re very important to each other and they LEARN from each other it’s what makes them interesting!! Making Bruce the better forensic scientist than Barry just to make him better is so much less interesting than their canon dynamic of talking for hours about cases and science and bouncing ideas off each other because they just get their mutual love for things like that!!

I’ve also strangely seen batfanon portray Ollie as more right leaning than Bruce which is??? ??? Never stops making me laugh, giving Ollie’s politics to Bruce, what a fascinating choice. I wonder if they know Ollie was based off of Robin Hood. Please touch a comic challenge.

I find Barry’s initial reaction to being resurrected such a fun spin on the ‘Came back wrong’ trope because he didn’t, everyone just expected him to come back happy and be who he was before he died but Barry just couldn’t, he already accepted his death and what he would sacrifice to save everyone and now whoever’s left wants him to smile and clap hands in a world that moved on without him and he was left to stagnate, a symbol of saints, but that’s not who he was and is no one listening? He can’t be upset because he’s alive again and that’s the penultimate joy right? But he doesn’t even recognise the person that everyone says he was, he’s unhappy but shove that down and crack a smile because you’re the Flash and that's what you do! Inspire hope when you don’t even feel it yourself.
