Critical support to Jet (atla). I don't really like Iroh much, but I'm liking Zuko upon watching the live action

I hate the way Zuko never abdicated and/or decolonised, and instead turned out pretending that the Fire Nation was bringing civilisation.
atla gaang hot takes
Aang is objectively the best male character in the franchise and the reason he gets so much hate is because of the violent racism against asians who aren't japanese, korean or chinese and therefore not 'aesthetic' or 'dream s/os'
Katara is neither a mom friend nor a snooty perfect prep nor a homohobic cishet girl. She's a victim of adultification and parentification,an autistic trans bisexy queen who likes her girls masc and her guys fem(Toph and Aang)and the definition of 'teenage anarchist' who only gets called a conformist because people erase her activism and direct action because she's a punk femme instead of a male edgelord and they think girls can only be rebels if it's to cater to men
Sokka is not stupid but a goofy goober and is the smartest character in the whole show and the only reason he gets called a himbo is tropeified racism. Also he owes Katara money for his treatment of her be so fr,he was a misogynist until he was 15 and she had to deal with him
Toph is a transmasc girl as seen by her getting overjoyed at her Ember Island Players sounding like a guy and it is SO unserious to pit her and Katara against eachother over Aang like they wouldn't all be a happy sapphic polycule(Aang is genderfluid tyvm)
While not her fault,Suki is easily the blandest Atla girl by a longshot and her popularity coming from Katara haters screams colorism from the Ba Sing Se rooftops. Also Zukki is not very good polyam rep unless it's tgirl Zuko,i could not care less about an mlm couple that stands on it's own with a girl slapped on but not really being part of the dynamic,MAKE HER A GIRLKISSER ABOUT IT!!!!
'Zuko was never evil' is factually incorrect and a very liberal take because it absolves him of responsibility that HE was the first person to hold himself accountable for by growing the fuck up and unlearning propaganda and giving the people he had privilege over reperations and it's not the writers fault y'all are fence sitters because of some dumbass crush over a guy who'd never even look in your general direction since you infantalize the shit out of him
And not technically Gaang members but they are in my heart so they get bonuses:Jet was more right than any yt boy you thirst after,Azula being so sexualized in canon is a result of the fetishization of underaged east asian girls,Mai is a lil angel compared to Zuko and you only demonize her because you can't accept unconventional women and Ty Lee is highly underrated and the best non-mc on the show-Autistic tgirl swag methinks

My cats are called Marshmallow, Bounty, Mao, Poe cat and there's a stray cat I've taken to calling Catro (he comes over daily, I love him)
idk what’s funnier, pets with stereotypical human names like bryan and mckayla or pets with completely ridiculous names like hamburger and concrete

I'm starting to like Zuko recently, but while he was the victim of imperialist violence (his face being melted for speaking out of turn about not wanting people to die needlessly), there's unfortunately one (1) small wrench in the works, he joined Azula to take control of Ba Sing Se, that's colonialist as it gets, I'm afraid. While the show drifts to trying to make it up to Iroh, and having him atone, that was still colonialism and doesn't need to be whitewashed
I usually try to avoid this side of the fandom because people use this term(in any way shape or form) and no other in my opinion is very childish but it's been bugging me so how can Zuko be a colonizer? Zuko the same boy who was only thinking of what was BEST for his people and how he didn't like the idea of them being used as fresh bait? Zuko the same 13 year old boy who was banished for only speaking out when his heart was in the right place? Zuko the same Prince who helped end the horrible bloodline of his own family of the ones who started the war?Zuko who was an awkward boy and wanted nothing more than his father's approval? Zuko who questioned the same war still after getting back into the nation? Zuko who was always misunderstood because of his horrid and difficult past always trying to best at him who in the end managed to shape his own destiny and was able to reclaim the one thing he was able to get back since season one? THAT Zuko really?
#zuko critical#zuko atla#this isn't directly hate tbh#I think Zuko would be better if he abolished the monarchy so I judge him a lot

y'know what I love about the boops? from what I can tell, the badges are for GIVING boops rather than receiving, which is just so delightfully tumblr. any other website would make it a popularity contest, or make it so that receiving boops was the determinant of success. not on tumblr.edu/careers no on here you get by giving and I think that's just so BOOP

For all who did not give up on Jetko, I present you this comics!
Set somewhere in Season 3, with Jet living and joining the gaang!
Captions if my handwriting is too hard to read:
Jet: you okay? You burning up!
Zuko: Fine…! Please don’t stop…
Jet: but…
Zuko: a fire bender, remember?!
Jet: so what? You literally go hot when aroused?
Zuko: yeah… kinda…

Kuvira being right on exactly one (1) thing, the Earth kingdom not belonging to the fire nation is still so funny, like Jet??? Was killed for being loud about what the fire nation took from him and directly blaming the fire nation altogether, because it's the whole system. But he (not the fascist) was the unreasonable one and had to die (sarcastic)
I argue that you could just as easily swap Zuko for Iroh (because I hate that guy) because why is he pitched as this very wise man when he still believes imperialism is right? Almost always preferring words over action, and even in the end, deciding he still has the gall to decide to live atop the people he directly was responsible for displacing enmasse, deciding he'd like to open a tea shop in the upper ring of Ba Sing Se, while the refugees are the wretched of the earth and are expected to just be content with what little they have, crammed together in the lower ring because at least there's no war now?
I really feel for Jet and want to put some context, my mum hates Boers (and white people more broadly) because she grew up in apartheid ZA. I have no right to tell her she can't feel that way against people who oppressed her (she also blames people like Thatcher who was very "anti violence" with regards to ANC for not responding the "right" way to being oppressed because it offended Western sensibility)
When people say that Jet can't feel that way about firebenders (who literally destroyed everything he knew, made him an orphan and homeless?) because Zuko never personally did that (leaving aside Iroh). He even responded pretty peacefully in Ba Sing Se? Instead of taking direct action when he found out, he tried to get evidence to give to the police (who just so happened to be corrupt). He did everything right in this arc, and the funny thing is, it's made ever so stark because what does Zuko do immediately after? Side with Azula and take Ba Sing Se.
It's a really Liberal (derogatory) take to me, that people who are/were oppressed can't hate their oppressors, even after the fact, and that there was an argument made (maybe in a comic, I don't remember) where the fire nation gets to stay in the Earth kingdom because that's their home now and that kicking out the oppressor would be just as bad so the progressive thing would be to turn the other cheek because they should just move on.
Skipping ahead, Zuko immediately tying himself to the altar of destiny by ???? Becoming the fire lord and keeping the monarchy ever so firmly in place, not really doing much to stop the rot from festering in the Fire nation (this is why the only Zuko I ever wanted would be a class traitor like Tony Benn.)
I watched Avatar more than a decade ago so I don't remember it so much, but Jet specifically was one of my favourite characters. I'm looking so forward to the live action because I'm liking Jet so much more (as a kid, I liked him and Hama (the grandma) generally, but ??? Now, I'm so much more attached to them)
That's Crazy How In Avatar Nazis Like Zuko And Kuvira Are Deep And Complex Characters But Oppressed People Like Communist Anarchist Jet And That Grandma Are Evill.

I don't accept that the Fire Nation should be allowed to keep their monarchy and maybe Zuko tries and tries to cling onto power because he's convinced he can change things in the Fire Nation from the inside out. It's ill thought out, he's naive but he's desperate to try and the Avatar lets him, just as misguided.
Zuko talks the right talk when he's suggesting they need to pull back from the Earth Kingdom, but when an advisor points out that the quarry only exists because the firebenders made it possible to mine, that if they're pulling troops back then Earthbenders will lose their jobs, and what else will they find to do? Will they go backwards without people to guide them? He sounds troubled as he says it, it reminds Zuko of Iroh and something in him twists.
Zuko doesn't recognise it for what it is he's done until the military stationed there are drowned out, like rats, and the advisor begins to let spite bleed into his words, when he calls the Earth kingdom leeches who don't even know what's good for them because they aren't accepting that hand the fire nation offered them, and Zuko can't find a reason to disagree, he knows they can't govern themselves
It keeps happening, nobility stopping him from doing a smooth, clean break, a unit gets maimed, and Zuko doesn't know how to navigate it, he doesn't even know who could be involved. It's tied to the Earth kingdom but that just draws suspicion, after all, wasn't Zuko in Ba Sing Se for a while? Who's to say he wasn't murdering them in cold blood to stir some terror, to make his advisors push back, Ozai liked to do this then cut down anyone too unwilling to fall into line quickly.
The way it looks to the people, he's attempting to snatch away power from the nobility who usually back him, his family? Zuko can't get rid of them, because he knows too much change could set up a coup, so he's moving slowly, but in doing so, he's not removing fire nation bases, or pearing down his army, he's stagnant. When people start talking about Ozai again, in whispers, he doesn't understand, he thought if the head of the snake was removed, the rest would follow along so he could rebirth the fire nation into a new era.
But the imperialistic fire nation was always more than one man, it's systematic, it's a disease and Zuko only realises it when the walls are closing in and he's abdicating under threat of being usurped, he's stuck trying to figure out what's happening and anyway, I just think Zuko finding the freedom fighters, with Jet alive and making sense of what the fire nation represents, that the advisors and nobility obviously don't want to let go of their power because war is profitable, so ofc they dress it up as benevolent rather than controlling
I just think class traitor Zuko finally joining the freedom fighters could be so fun because the Palace was always stifling but he's only realising it when he's in the trees again, when the blue spirit comes alive again because you can't wash away 100 years of imperialism when it's embedded in the structure itself and they should start getting along in their shared ideal of wanting to resist. For Zuko it's to remove the rot, the corruption from the Fire Nation, for Jet and his people, to get the Fire Nation army to stop oppressing them, to leave them to govern themselves.
That it's Fire Nation propaganda that they (the Earth kingdom) can't function without the Fire Nation, it's nothing more than a way for the Fire Nation bourgeoisie to line their pockets because war is far more profitable than demilitarising like Zuko wanted so ofc they'd be at odd ends with him
#jet atla#jet#jetko#Freedom fighter Zuko#zuko#atla zuko#prince zuko#Freedom fighters#I honestly think it'd be better if Zuko gets to this line of thinking without his uncle#I think the problem of the fire nation is never really addressed and I need it to#People like Iroh don't get it#Iroh works through inaction he dithers and doesn't completely buy into imperialism being bad#he just never takes that last step#Iroh might personally be good now but politically he still isn't and Zuko should recognise it#anti monarchy for the fire nation#iroh critical#Just to be safe#netflix atla#I can't believe I'm getting sucked back into one of my old ships so easily
