Start your engines! This graphite sketch of an old vintage train was something I needed to do for a workshop series I am leading at the workplace. The creme-colored drawing paper really pulls it together. #art #artist #sketch #drawing #train #practice #vintage #training #realism #travel (at Nashville, Tennessee)

Here is a quick work in progress shot of the current drawing of Bobby the cat, hiding out in a bag. I always begin with a light foundational sketch and then dive into the details for portraiture. Hope to have this little guy in about a week's time or less 🐈 #art #artist #wip #instart #cat #pet #portrait #catsinthebag #practice #drawing (at Tom+Chee Nashville West)

"Peregrine Falcon" - 8x10", graphite on paper. Had this illustration in its early stages for a good while so it's nice to see it all polished and ready for the wild. Next up in drawings: a special cat commission for the Loyal Companions series. #art #artist #drawing #bird #peregrinefalcon #falcon #realism #letsfly #practice #animals #wings #blackandwhite (at Nashville, Tennessee)

It’s been a long while since my last post here! So much has changed: my environment, home, and lot more. What hasn’t changed is my love for portraiture.
New fathers like Naveen pictured here was elated with the birth of his daughter not too long ago. He snapped a wonderful photo of them together and it was a treat to work on. The lighting, composition and texture differences were the big challenges here - not perfect but I am satisfied by the result (which looks less grainy).

December closes out with a sketch from a visit to the Frist Art Center in Nashville, TN. This is derived from John Singer Sargent’s epic 1919 oil painting called Gassed, describing a group of British soldiers in WWI recovering from a mustard gas attack. It was a powerful piece to see in person and captured the tone perfectly.

“Genetic Razor Wire” - marker, ink, and pencil on paper; 6x8″. I’ve been thinking a lot about how genetics and epigenetics affect one’s health. There is a lot of data out there but it’s not necessarily prescriptive - more cautionary tale and advisement.

My earlier attempt at a portrait last month didn't turn out so well but this is shaping up nicely. The toothy grain of some new vellum paper has been kind :) #art #artist #drawing #portrait #pencil #practice #patience #blackandwhite (at Nashville, Tennessee)

Hard to imagine a dress this fancy could be under $7 but in the 1940′s, things were different. :)

These two studies have been a lot of fun - and there’s plenty to learn. Graphite will always be a favorite medium of mine.
