you don’t own me
hearing this song during (spoiler alert) fred’s death was literally so cathartic for me. like that song just obviously brings back so many memories of season 1 and just the feeling of the earliest handmaid’s tale episodes, and our introduction to that brutal world. hearing “you don’t own me” play in this episode just immediately puts us back in those early days, reminding us of how cruel and hopeless it all felt back then - a lot different than now seeing june free. The song reminds us of all that violence & hopelessness, and of Fred’s central role in that, which we were a lot closer with earlier in the show. he literally “owned” june- she was offred. she did what he wanted and when he wanted. what he said when he said. and her life depended on it. the monologue at the beginning of this ep describes this perfectly. because this song puts us back in the feeling of being trapped under fred in Gilead, i thought it was a brilliant choice to play over his death/comeuppance. because it does recall/elicit all that anger toward him by reminding us of what it was like with him. but also now because he doesn’t own june. she’s free now, and this episode was even the first time we’ve ever really heard fred call june june- which “always has been” her name.

sorry if this post is literally incoherent it’s late and i’m tired but i have a lot of thoughts that need to be vented lol
june & nick in 4x10 “Wilderness”
something about June & nick in this episode was so unbelievably satisfying to me. okay first: i thought it was a really great payoff to see nick’s loyalty to june over fred come to a such a consequential head. fred is begging nick for help/mercy, calling him “son”- which calls back what fred’s relationship with nick really was at first (one where nick was clearly inferior to him, but there was a closeness that Fred thought brought some kind of a trust). however, nick is clearly loyal to june over fred, and i thought it was cool to see fred be forced to truly realize that as nick’s leading him into the woods. second: THE KISS. GUYS THE KISS. this was like genuinely one of the most satisfying moments to me lol. like fred was so obsessed with june for so long (let’s think of the opening monologue of this ep for a sec), and he had so much power over both her and nick that they both just had to do what he wanted, which caused them tremendous pain & trauma. in season 2 we then especially saw how much fred hated the idea that june didn’t really care for him, that she cared for nick instead (and nick cared for her), and that nick is the true father of her baby. June & nick kissing in front of Fred, in a moment where he truly has no power (they do), is the most confrontational & aggressive display of their love in front of him that we’ve seen yet, and its such a slap in the face to fred. and it’s something that he truly HATES to see, especially right before his demise. that’s why i love that moment ;)

Heyo fellow handmaid's tale fan here...quick question: a lot of fans seem to know how season 4 will generally end (ex. Serena walking free) and I'm wondering...how do people know this?? (And is there a chance it's not true lol) thanks in advance!
hello fellow handmaid’s tale fan!! so sorry for the late response and just seeing this now! so just speaking for myself (i’m not as involved with the forums and spoilers this season unfortunately, just the teasers for the most part 😅) the reason i had some early theories about serena & fred walking free was because of the clip from the teaser of the two of them walking happily in their Gilead garb- but that clip was from this episode, so it doesn’t look like the trailer showed them free after all! apart from that, i just have some small theories that make me nervous for their potential freedom. one of those things that make me nervous is tuello. another is this idea of Margaret Atwood’s that she only wrote about things that actually happened or are happening at some point in the world, which is being echoed in the show- and justice ultimately not being served to Serena & Fred would fit that unfortunately, which makes me nervous that it might happen. BUT, don’t worry, because as far as me and my account are concerned, i don’t know what’s gonna happen to them by the end of the season- so in my eyes there’s a chance they won’t walk free! at this point i just have theories about both 😝 thanks for your question and hope i was helpful in some way!!
