👋 Earlier I showed you how I craft my "Hammer-Texture" rings. Here's the finished ring! There is a letter "E" stamped inside as requested by the customer. 👋 Meet one of my studio partners: my favorite non-asbestos ceramic blocks! I was asked why I chose the ceramic blocks vs charcoal blocks. The technical answer is that in my experience, the ceramic blocks are better for soldering smaller items. They retain the heat from the torch very well so you can avoid accidentally melting your smaller pieces.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Charcoal blocks on the other hand, can reflect heat very well. So you can achieve a hotter environment and solder faster with charcoal blocks. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm a full-time maker so I heat up these blocks up every day. Although charcoal blocks have long been the more popular blocks to solder on, I find that they don't hold up as well and I'm needing to replace them at a higher rate as compared to the ceramic blocks. So in terms of sustainability, I prefer the ceramics.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We all produce some waste. But it is my hope to run my studio with as little waste as possible. And that includes my choice of tools. If I can produce less waste, a slightly slower production is good with me! 😊⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm always looking for greener and better tools. 👋 Would you like to know how I made the rings?⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In goldsmithing and metalsmithing in general, there are many ways to achieve a similar result. While the usual considerations are a trade-off between efficiency and quality, unfortunately, sustainability and "grounding/connection" are often not debated when choosing a production method.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I want my entirely handcrafted jewelry business to be earth-friendly. For me, structuring my production processes with sustainability in mind is like trying to hit an ever-moving target. For example, every year, I come to know of more cutting-edge tools from my industry that is designed to make my job faster, and easier! Now, I'm not against such excellent advancement per say, but these tools are rather high-tech and often requires much electricity, chemicals, and gasses to operate so the batch per production can be bigger. Do I need these tools? Maybe, but I'm just not sure I'm ready to trade in my good ol' torch, saw and hammer yet... Afterall, making jewelry with these old-fashioned tools is rather green as the tools are as is, and all jewelry pieces has to be made one-by-one to order. 🙂⁣⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this picture, the rings you see are soldered by me and they're ready to be cleaned up and formed into perfect circles, one-by-one. I was once asked by a friend; how can I do this everyday? I don't know, I just love it! For me, the process is quite zen (although positioning the solder precisely can be a pain). But most importantly, I have a connection with every piece that I craft. 👋!! November and December are the most hectic months for me as a full-time maker. I'm usually up from 6am until 11pm, packing and fulfilling orders, and most importantly, writing my thank you notes to my wonderful customers! ❤️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I'm crafting, sometimes I make mistakes and I would get so upset with myself. Here I am in a time-crunch, and I have to redo an order due to a stupid mistake I made... That's usually the beginning of a negative spiral for the day if I don't catch it fast enough. It happened today... so, can you guess what I did?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I took a short break! and enjoyed a cup of coffee with chips. 👋!! I was asked at an art fair once to give advice to someone that wants to grow their handmade business. I found myself saying "I think...", "I feel...", "I would do this and that", a lot. Finally, the nice lady I was talking to said, "well, I'm still not sure what I need to do".⁣ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It came to me later that we naturally tend to seek comfort and advice from a friend. But, maybe we should recognize that we are also our own bff? And when something good comes around, I also often forget to congratulate myself. What if the customer is not happy with the order? What if I ran out of materials before I can restock? What if I get sick? What if... The fears never stop coming. And worst, it seems that the more successful I become, the more fears I have...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I'm faced with these fears, my trained reaction is to remind myself why I chose to do what I do. I remind myself that I hate working for sleazy companies that do not treat people (customers and employees) well. And I remind myself that I want to build my own company that will be so worth loving and working for. And then, I go read the wonderful reviews you wonderful people have left me ❤️⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My way of dealing with the negative dialogue inside my head did not come naturally.
