Nicolas Maduro suggests “liberating” Puerto Rico “with Brazilian troops”
His remarks were made at the International Antifascist World Festival in Venezuela.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro made some statements this weekend where he suggested that the liberation of Puerto Rico as a territory of the United States should be sought and indicated that this would be achieved with troops from Brazil.
The statements of the Venezuelan president were made at the closing of the International World Antifascist Festival in the Latin American country where there were people with flags from various countries including that of Puerto Rico.
Maduro invited the people who were carrying the flags of Puerto Rico and Cuba to the stage, then asked that the musical theme “De un pájaro las dos alas” by singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés be played.
“Just as in the north they have a colonization agenda, we have a liberation agenda and the agenda was written for us by Simón Bolivar, the freedom of Puerto Rico is pending and we will achieve it, with the troops of Brazil and Abreu e Lima will go to the front. Abreu e Lima Battalion to liberate Puerto Rico. What do you think?” said the president of Venezuela.
It should be noted that there were also people in the audience with the Brazilian flag, which is why the president would have made the comments about involving the South American country in his suggestion to free Puerto Rico.
At the same event, the president who was sworn in for another term in office, also warned that he will take up arms if necessary and in case his government is threatened.
“Venezuela is preparing itself together with Cuba, together with Nicaragua, together with our older brothers in the world, in case one day we have to take up arms to defend the right to peace, the right to sovereignty and the historical rights of our country,” said the president.
The festival brought together over 2,000 delegates from 125 countries at the event that takes place after the swearing-in of the Venezuelan president and amid protests by the opposition over the result of last year's election.
