Tampon Tax decision made by shit people, majority of which are male.
Australian state and territory treasurers met today with Joe Hockey, the federal treasurer, to discuss the GST. As it wasn’t unanimous, the treasurers did not change the current practice that states feminine hygiene products are subject to the GST. Out of the 8 states and territories in Australia, 7 out of 8 treasurers are male. How do they get to decide that I must pay tax when purchasing products that ensure I don’t bleed all over my clothes for one week a month for approximately 40 years of my life?! Men making decisions that affect females exclusively really fucking irk me.
If you feel uncomfortable thinking about this issue, or reading and discussing it, I suggest you consider how uncomfortable it must be to actually have a period. It is not ‘good’ to have a period, so why are Australian women being charged a goods and services tax for purchasing hygiene products to ensure we don’t walk around with blood dripping from us for a quarter of our year?
Also, the NSW treasurer, who is a woman, advised before the summit that she would not be voting to remove the tampon tax. Fuck you, Gladys Berejiklian.

Nazanin Bagheri
I turned 23 yesterday. Nazanin Bagheri is also 23 years old, but she is also an asylum seeker currently held on Naura Island detention centre, along with her family, for an indefinite time period. In May, she was raped. She has subsequently attempted to commit suicide and her been separated from her family. The Australian government is refusing to bring her and her family to Australia to receive the medical and psychological attention she so desperately needs.
Please sign the petition asking Peter Dutton, immigration minister, to intervene and bring her to Australia.

So according to a survey, Australians consider ISIS to be a major threat.
If major party politicians and major news publications are to be believed, asylum seekers are coming in through the back door and doing the wrong and illegal thing by coming and asking for shelter*. Some of these refugees are fleeing Syria and Iraq BECAUSE of ISIS. And yet we refuse to treat them with humanity and put them in foreign detention centres where health professionals are at risk of being prosecuted if they speak out about mistreatment. More asylum seekers have died at Manus Island than have been granted resettlement in Australia. What the actual fuck, Australia?!
As an immigrant, I’m well aware of my fortunate position to be an Australian citizen. I get to go to university and study what I love. I get to live with my family and friends and go on holidays and have all round decent life. The blatant racism in Australia desperately needs to be addressed. As a nation that is close to being wholly made up of immigrants and immigrants’ descendants, Australians need to fucking check their privilege before they fucking wreck themselves
*N.B. In another recent survey, conducted by good blokes, The Red Cross, close to 7 out of 10 Australians believe it is illegal to to come by boat to Australia without a visa. News flash, it is legal and is enshrined as a basic human right in the UNDHR.
