Sir. I have just arrived to this fandom, very late, and I am BEGGING for some sort of context regarding the aquatic animal commonly known as the "armfish."

Hello and welcome!

The armfish comes from the historical/real life side.

The real James Fitzjames sent a letter to John Barrow Jr. from the Whalefish Islands in July 1845 where he recounts a story of going out in a canoe and tipping over. He also included a little sketch of himself cap-sized which includes a strange little fish with arms staring at him

The armfish quickly become beloved by Terror fandom bc, well, look at him! And he has inspired much art and crafting. I myself make plushie versions wearing sweaters and @jamesfishjames collects pretty much all of the armfish art
