Friendly reminder that people with stigmatized personality disorders like Borderline, Narcissistic, and Antisocial are people, too, and they struggle with their disorders more than anyone else. That's why it's called a "disorder;" it impacts their life in a negative way because of, more often than not, childhood trauma. People typically develop personality disorders because of things they went through in childhood that fundamentally changed the way their brains work, and it takes so much therapy and constant hard work to unlearn the behaviors adopted in childhood. (Not to mention that traumatized people are more likely to be re-traumatized later in life.) Vilifying people with these disorders is extremely harmful to them, others they care about, and those who care about them.

We are people, just like you. Please, be kind.

In fact, total break from the usual focus of my content lol no narcissism at all (though I’m still using some of the tags for the sake of reach. I’ve noticed a nice little overlap between aplatonicism and npd/npd traits, lmao)

Today—ironically by request of my friends—I felt like making a new/alternate design for the aplatonic flag because I’ve never liked the standard one very much. I wasn’t fond of the colours, which is fine, but the meanings also rubbed me the wrong way? Take a look at what I mean:

It just feels weird to me to design it based around what we aren’t, as well as how we can “make up” for our aplatonicism, so to speak. I don’t think that was the intention. but I dislike it all the same.

Anyway, here’s my own design:

Meanings:

Pink & green - friending and nonfriending aplatonics, placed next to each other to show solidarity

White - joy in one’s aplatonic identity; mirrors the white stripe on many aspec flags

Grey - greyplatonics and demiplatonics, like on other aspec flags

Black - finishes the white-grey-black gradient present in other aspec flags; represents aspec community and aplatonicism as a whole :3

hopefully I’ll do another imo thing soon. If not, uhhh… Whoops!

Hi! Glad you asked, I’ve been meaning to clarify this for a while. I created the imo creature for anybody who is affected by narcissism, whether what they’re experiencing is NPD or narcissistic traits without the full disorder. If you have NPD, narcissistic traits, or are suspecting/questioning either one, imo is completely open to you to associate with! And of course, anybody who is supportive of people with NPD/narcissistic traits is welcome to interact with my blog and my posts or create content of the creature in support/solidarity if they like it.

Sure! Narcissistic abuse is a term used by a lot of people to describe what is actually just emotional abuse, and in doing so they give the idea that everybody with narcissistic personality disorder is abusive, or that NPD will make a person abusive.

Of course, people with NPD can be abusive, and NPD symptoms can be used to abuse or hurt people even if the person doesn’t intend to. However, that goes for any disorder. For example, a person who has anxiety can be controlling or irritable due to their symptoms, but anxiety doesn’t guarantee that. And if you were emotionally abused by someone with anxiety, you wouldn’t call it “anxious abuse,” you’d just say emotional abuse.

Not only does NPD not guarantee that somebody is abusive, it can make someone more vulnerable to being abused by other people, and it is most often caused by abuse in the first place. The people that are most harmed by NPD are the people who have it—even though, yes, it can be more difficult to be close with someone who has it. Again, this is true of all disorders, and frankly any close relationship with anyone is difficult. That’s just how relationships are.

Additionally, many (if not most) people who have NPD do not display their symptoms “maliciously,” and those who do still deserve basic respect and support as human beings. Labelling and stigmatizing all people with NPD as abusers is just plain inaccurate at best and very harmful at worst, as NPD is a trauma response that hurts the person experiencing it more than the people around them.

People with NPD deserve respect, patience, understanding, and support, not hatred or fear. And most people that are claimed to be “narcissistic abusers” aren’t even diagnosed with NPD, people are just guessing based on misinformation. Narcissist isn’t just a code word for evil, and “narcissistic abuse” simply doesn’t exist. It’s emotional abuse, and it can be done by anyone

being looking into research for years and finally coming to terms with having npd and just wanted to say that the imo creature gives me so much joy that little creature. that’s me. i send pictures of him to my bf and it’s just like a silly lighthearted thing that’s sorta letting me feel more lighthearted and able to talk to him so. thank you

woah, thanks for the ask!! i’m glad that my little guy’s been such a big help to you. any suspicion—let alone certainty—of npd or narcissistic traits is unfortunately way more intimidating than it needs to be with all of the negative attitudes towards the disorder and the people who have it, so I’m definitely happy imo can act as a more positive avatar for narcissism. or at the very least, a cuter one :3
