Fun project today! We had a 50's era Buffet Bb Clarinet that had a throat Bb so stuffy and flat it wasn't even the correct note. We pulled the register tube, opened it up slightly, re-installed and sealed with paraffin. THEN we made this cool insert for the register key pad called a "Hasty" insert. It's a tapered insert made of Delrin (hard rubber basically), and the theory is that it pushes the sound out beyond the flat surface of the cork pad. This is a modification that we use sparingly, because sometimes the complaint is that it makes the instrument too bright. In this case, every option was needed to open up the throat Bb and raise the pitch. As the season changes, the humidity levels also change. Wood instruments will naturally contract and expand with these changes, and it is not uncommon for a crack to occur. Do not worry! A crack in your instrument is part of the process of the wood finding its resting place, if treated correctly, the crack will be pinned in place, sealed and you should never have a problem with the crack again. With the cold weather arriving, lightly oiling the wood and letting an instrument adjust to a change in temperature before playing will help prevent cracks from occurring, but there isn't a 100% tried and true method of prevention. Every time a tenon or neck cork is replaced it gets sealed with paraffin. This helps the cork last longer, makes it smoother, and creates a protective barrier from cork grease.
