We should have seen more of the whole Gwaine not fighting like anyone else thing
Something happens that throws a spanner in the works of the knights formation. Everyone else is mildly floundering (I mean like reg knights here not The Knights) meanwhile Gwaine just adapts
Him dueling more and nobody being able to anticipate his moves
Just him and Arthur fighting together more like we were promised

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Merlin (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Major Character Death Relationships: Lancelot/Merlin (Merlin) Characters: Merlin (Merlin), Arthur Pendragon (Merlin), Gwen (Merlin), Knights of the Round Table (Merlin) Additional Tags: Grief/Mourning, Lancelot is dead, sorry - Freeform, Canon Compliant, If you want - Freeform, or this could be the start of a wild AU, I choose to believe the latter, Emotional Hurt, Hurt Merlin (Merlin), I mean no one is doing great, But Merlin is doing especially bad, No ones probably going to read this one, but i couldn't get it out of my head, so i'm posting it, MCD is for lancelot, who is dead before the start of this, idk if that counts but I'm trying to be nice, Angry Merlin (Merlin), Hurt with imaginary comfort the author didn't write coming down the road if you choose to believe it, This is probably messy, but I’m going through some stuff, so excuse me Series: Part 12 of Dialogue I wrote in my notes app Summary:
The funeral was a solemn event. Everyone quiet and watching the flames lick at a red cape and a gilded sword, enwrapping all that was left from Lancelot in bright light and heated warmth.
And well, Merlin hated it.
i.e. Author is dealing with some stuff through the use of fictional characters and is taking you all along for the awful clown car of a ride.

Ok I have thoughts.
Do I think Morgana would always be against Uther and nothing Merlin could do would have changed that? Yes!
Do I think Merlin offering his magic and the prophecy to a desperate Morgana would have changed the outlook of her arc through the entire series? Also yes!
Do I think Merlin should have felt compelled to give over a secret that could see him killed? No!
I understand the choices made from every direction but if we are talking season 1 and 2, a Morgana grasping onto anything and everything that could help her feel even slightly secure in her awful position, Merlin explaining it to her, sharing his knowledge, his culture, would have most likely been as impactful as Morgause’s offerings.
And I think him opening up to her about the prophecy would have done them both a world of good. Morgana because she might gain just a fraction of Merlin’s hope, even if she doesn’t fully believe in what an old dragon says, especially since she has seen Arthur move towards kindness before in saving the Druid boy and trying to get Gwen out of prison. Merlin since Morgana can show him that the prophecy never mentioned losing yourself along the way and he needs to continue to stand up for what he believes in no matter how many times he is knocked down, since all it takes is saving one person, one dragon, one future to fix everything.
Now here’s where I totally contradict myself in saying that I don’t think it would have been remotely smart for Merlin to tell Morgana about his magic, a women he barely knows already forced to keep her own secret, not needing the extra weight of keeping his as well.
We have seen Morgana stand two toes down on things she believes in S1 and S2, to the point of near death in many occasions. And if per se the witch finder decides to point to Merlin with her knowing of his magic there is not a chance in hell she would be able to keep her mouth shut. Or you know Merlin decided to get in between an angry Arthur and his father who knows what she’ll let slip to see Uther dead.
Not even to mention the fact that we saw her turn against friends in S4 for no real reason (I’m looking at you Lancelot de luc episode((Gwen legit deserved so much better))) so having Merlin put himself in that position, to threaten his life on the chance that this strong headed woman who he’s been told will be the death of Arthur, a man she clearly loves, is going to stick by his side no matter what is a little naive.
So yes I think Merlin could have changed everything in that moment by confessing, but I don’t necessarily think he should’ve.
I have seen so many people say that if Merlin confessed to having magic, Morgana wouldn't have become evil and I don't necessarly agree with this mostly (even though I would really love for this to be true) because Morgana did hate Uther for all he had done to magic users and she actually feared of what might become of her should he discover, and I think she would have tried to kill him and take the throne regardless of knowing if Merlin had magic or not. She was driven by her fear and her anger and even if Merlin did offer her his support, and teached her more about magic, this would have changed very little in what path Morgana would have taken, especially because only the ruler of Camelot (Uther in this case, Arthur in the future) had a say in whatever future a being of magic such as Morgana would have.
It is also probable that Morgana could have tried to make Merlin be on her side (impossible feat seeing as he is so loyal and enamoured with Arthur), but it would have changed so little. In the series, Morgana's destiny was doomed by Uther and whichever pact he made (which he didn't even understand fully) just to have a male heir and consequently decimated an entire population because he didn't understand the terms of the pact or whatever it was called.
So no, really Merlin should not really be blamed for what Morgana decided to do. Even if she knew about Merlin, she would have made the same decision, probably thinking that she was in the right and could help the magical community.
(The only thing I blame Merlin for is for stopping Arthur when he wanted to kill his father, he really should have let him do it. I don't remember if Morgana was evil at that point, or if she had just discovered her magic, but I think that if only the Pendragon siblings would have just communicated with each other a lot of pain would have been avoided)

merlin telling mordred “if arthur knew you had magic, things would be very different” oof. ok bestie let’s unpack that. that line is such a projection. it’s not about mordred, it’s about himself. this is a man who has spent years contorting himself into a shape small enough to stand beside arthur without being seen fully. this is a man who has saved arthur’s life more times than anyone could count, followed him into every war, and still believes that the second arthur really sees him, all of him, it will all fall apart.
if arthur knew…yeah, things would be very different. that’s a warning he’s been repeating in his own head for years. he’s already played the conversation out a thousand times in his head, and it never ends with understanding. merlin still doesn’t think arthur will ever accept him as he really is. not if he’s magic. not if he’s the one thing arthur was taught to hate.
that line? direct translation is actually “if arthur knew me, if arthur saw me, if arthur knew what i’ve done and who i am, he would hate me. everything would change and i would not survive it”

What random skill do you think Merlin and Leon would learn in their immortal lives? Like you have to get super board at some point especially before the internet existed and just idk learn all the digits of pi? Figure out every move in chess? Pick up a randomly super dead language? Crack a forever old code? Solve a long cold murder? Do a crazy gymnastics move? Like I'm bored all the time I can't imagine it spread over eternity. Probs all of the above then.

unpopular opinion but bbc merlin wouldn't have half the fandom it has today if arthur hadn't died at the end
we would have been like look! it's a cozy medieval fantasy show and it's really funny and the main character and actually everyone is so shippable!!! and it would have died eventually
but now we're like look!!!! it's a cozy medieval fantasy and it's really funny but also they were DOOMED from the START
merlin will WAIT for him for 1500 YEARS. everything he did was for NOTHING and all his choices led him to this moment and it was somehow completely out of his control at the same time and magic was never made legal during arthur's reign and also it was CHRISTMAS

Is their anyone out there that truly thinks Arthur would have not banished (*cough* *cough* tried to kill) Merlin when he revealed his magic at the end of season 5 if he wasn’t actively dying? And if so can I live in the delusion you’ve created?

Merlin singing this song at karaoke night at a random pub when Gwaine walks in. Them locking eyes when Merlin sings “it’s got to happen, happen sometime” at the very end of the song. Everything else disappearing for a moment and it’s simply just them in a pub seeing each other for the first time, for the hundredth, for the thousandth time. Mhmm yeah.

My Merlin hot takes . Canon addition for Merlin.
1. If Arthur wasn't dying he would have banished Merlin for having magic. Arthur is unredeemable by the end of the series. The fact that he couldn't do it and they made Arthur forgive him was why the ending sucked.
2. Lancelot/Will was Merlin's best friend, with Gwen/Gwaine coming in second.
3. Merlin was not obsessed/in love with Arthur, he was obsessed with having a destiny/purpose. If Arthur dies, he knew he will not fulfill his destiny/purpose. The beautiful Merthur friendship that was building Season 1 -3 no longer exist by the end of season 4. And is gone completely by season 5. Because they both would not see each other as equals.
4. Merlin was not alone at the end of the series because Freya was still there as the lady of the lake. I am not sure why everyone forgot that she is technically immortal too.
