I am... entirely convinced that there's an uncut take somewhere out there where Hangman and Rooster hugged at the end.

Probably after Hangman hugged Phoenix, he looks at Rooster again, and Rooster, bewildered that he's seeing Hangman smile so sincerely at him, looking like he's as grateful as Rooster to see he's alive, says "thank you". And impossibly, that gets Hangman to smile wider, and his eyes probably mist a little, but Rooster is ignoring that because he's hugging Hangman and patting him on the back, trying to convert how grateful he is that he saved not only him, but also Mav. Hangman takes the hug in a stride and was laughing lightly saying, "don't get soft on me, Bradshaw." Because of course he's still a little shit. So Bradley pulls back and before he could say another word, Hangman tips his head over to Mav's direction. Bradley laughs as he sees Mav being hugged by Hondo and he heads to his direction, but not before looking at Jake (and Jake has a nice ring to it) still smiling.

He calls for Mav as he feels Jake pat his back. He's probably bruised black and blue from ejecting out of a bombed aircraft, running in a frozen wilderness, crash landing inside of an F-14 but Bradley feels his heart getting lighter. And that's everything he needs for now.

I'm pretty sure Hondo helped him launch. I think Hondo was functioning as a Landing Officer or just a Warrant Officer (or smth of the like, I don't really know how the Navy works) when they were at the carrier. Especially when Hondo looked up when they heard Rooster is airborne, I bet he ran out of that room and was probably shouting at the crew (probably the Plane Director and Catapult Officers) to help Hangman launch, even though there wasn't an order yet.

I also would like to think that Cyclone and Warlock knew what Hondo is gonna do the moment he high-tailed it out of that room (but they're also still reeling at the fact that Rooster and Mav are in a fcking F-14 like WTF and now Hondo is probably gonna order the crew to launch Hangman or else). And when Hangman does launch and Cyclone sees the operator say, "do not engage Spare", in mild panic as she looks at Cyclone, he just shakes his head. Warlock, being helpful (and secretly fist-bumping Hangman in his mind), orders her to try and connect them with Rooster.

can we have the last 10 minutes of the movie in hangman's POV?

like i wanna see his pov after the "dagger 2 is hit!" and then his face when the foxtrot teams landed on the carrier and of course rooster isn't there. he must have put his head on his hands as phoenix looks at him in sympathy, partly shocked that hangman looks truly devastated but at the same time knowing they're long time colleagues, of course he's gonna be gutted knowing rooster is... dead.

payback and fanboy slowly alighting from their planes too as they make eye contact with phoenix and bob. they might have wanted to go inside the briefing room or smth where the rest are waiting for them but they can't, it feels wrong, because hangman isn't going down his perch. phoenix debates it and decides to go to him, nodding at bob, payback and fanboy to go on without her.

phoenix climbing the ladder to hangman and jake just watches her, knowing she's going to make him go down, but instead phoenix probably stays standing there, leaning on the side of his plane, kinda looming over him. they have never been friends, but they also were the only long time colleagues of rooster in this detachment. there's a sense of kinship there. and they stay there probably, for about 1-2 hours that mav and rooster are getting their shit together and hijacking an f-14 on the other side.

maybe on the 2nd hour, phoenix finally puts her hand on hangman's shoulder, not really knowing what to say but knows that hangman will understand the goodwill nonetheless. and jake looks up to her and tries to smile (maybe the most sincere smile that phoenix has seen on his face), but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.

still, he slowly stands up until he hears they're receiving a signal from rooster's e-sat. he abruptly sits back down, buckling up and starts doing pre-flight checks. phoenix scrambles to put on her own helmet (she probably put it on top of hangman's chute bag) as tower reports an f-14 tomcat is on course for their position. she maybe laughs in disbelief and she looks at hangman actually turning on his plane, she sees the others come out of the briefing room, all of them looking hopeful. phoenix gets down to meet them as hondo probably ran out of the tower looking like someone is chasing him. phoenix and bob immediately just gets it and they stow hangman's ladder while the others disconnect everything. phoenix or coyote probably shouts at hangman, "go get them!" and hangman needs no more encouragement even while the tower is probably telling him to "do not engage, spare"

hangman flew like his life depended on it, pushing his aircraft probably to its limit. tower operator on his ear sounds like she's taking a deep breath while reporting that the f-14 is now being surrounded by two bandits, and then later saying that they're engaging. hangman almost wished he could fly there himself. that's what he's doing now and he feels like he couldn't get there fast enough, rooster e-sat is nearing neutral territory. rooster's voice reaches his ear as he happily says, "mav i got the radio on!" followed by maverick ordering rooster to get them in touch with the boat.

before he can breathe in relief, he hears another bandit is spotted. and his heart drops when mav says, "he's on our nose." hangman does everything to push his plane faster, gritting his teeth when he hears mav shouts at bradley to eject and bradley shouting back, "it's not working!" and at last he finally sees them. the f-14 pulling up while the su-57 chases after it and all hangman could think is "oh not today".

he hears mav whisper, "i'm sorry goose" and it's almost like a gospel as he gets tone and pull the trigger on the su-57. hangman suddenly realizes how fast is he going as his plane pushes out of the smoke and the only thing he could think of to say is, "good afternoon ladies and gentlemen--" and he just goes off from memory as he sees mav and rooster, mav knocking the glass to give him a thumbs up and rooster's laughter as he says, "hey hangman! you look good."

and jake feels alive.

later on, he hurriedly walks towards the crowd cheering for maverick and rooster. a genuine smile he can't stop forming on his face and rooster congratulates him for chalking another kill, while phoenix's eyes gleam as she reminds them that maverick has 5 (because of course the old man can't be outdone). rooster shrugs at him and jake probably feels his hand itching (maybe to punch him or pull him idk) so he hits rooster's chest and hugs phoenix while whispering, "thank you." and natasha grins up at him as she pats his back and knows without saying what he means.

(much later on, he gets chewed out in debriefing by an exasperated cyclone and warlock, who's not saying anything but is looking at him in approval. rooster probably glances at him too many times in a mix of disbelief and gratefulness. hangman thinks it's a good start.)
