One of the biggest movie people point at to complain about the netflix look is "Don't look up." A movie shot on film.
youtube
The Netflix look is at fault of Netflix. Not digital cameras.

Some of my fave movies shot digitally that filled with color and defies the "gray sludge" allegations.

Putting this list together I notice one connection they have is that they allow shadows to be shadows.

No that's just Ridley Scott being Ridley Scott. He does it on both film and digital.

Next time you go out and about. Take a look around at cars. You'll see it's mostly black gray and white SUV. Your eyes doesn't work like film or digital cameras. Consumerism fears colors anymore especially if there marketing towards men.
Culture critic isn't even arguing against film vs digital. There arguing against minimalism. An absolute plague. I do not hate the life style in concept. But minimalism should not mean you should devoid your life with texture. Color. Or a personality
If Michael bay made Transformers today. All the auto bots would be a SUV or a cross over in black white or gray. Hell the only sudan Ford even sells any more is the mustang.
Then you look at consoles like the Xbox lose any and all personality and even Nintendo is falling into this trap.
Like how the hell did this guy look at culture critic's post. Miss the fucking point and go "Well obviously this is about the look that digital cameras produce" DUDE! THERE IS NO CORRELATION TO THE PROBLEM AT HAND!
Even outside of movies and photography digital cameras still get the blame by choice made by people! Make it make sense!

Mmmmm yes. Totally the switch to digital and not the excessive amount of Photoshop done to the 2008 photo.

That's just not the point of this blog. Im just here to vent about the pretentiousness that has grown recently that digital cameras are getting scaped goated for because studios focus on assembly line manufactured movies.
To a point that people mix the two up. When really the look of a movie is determined by the people behind the camera not the camera it's self.
Yes baby driver looks great. Incredibly clean even. A clean sheen often associated with digital. Most of the movie was not shot digitally.
Baby driver was shot on film with stunts that was too bulky for film cameras digitally. But it was 90% film

Out of all 7 movies only one was shot digitally.
This mind set needs to die.

That's not how the soap opera effect works. Digital cameras light sensitivity has nothing to do with the soap opera effect. The only way a digital camera is gonna look weird is if you either shoot at high frame rate (i.e The hobbit or avatar 2) or you shoot in the dark at a 360 degree shutter angle (I.E public enemy's.)
The latter is because the bigger the shutter angle the more blurry the motion will be.
I wanna track back to my point I made in a earlier post. The problem with recent marvel movies is not the change of cameras sense phase one. It's the change in management.
Paramount started the MCU. Phase one has that paramount look. Something that even digitally shot movies like overlord has.

These movies were shot with the same camera. 3 of them from the same movie trilogy. "Depth" is not determined by the camera whatever TF that means.

Godzilla 2014 was shot digitally. Only one of 7 Jurassic movies was shot digitally.
The only thing that changed is shareholders and nostalgia bias.
Share holders wants none stop clones of what makes a billion dollars.
Survivorship bias makes you forget the trash movies that came out between the greats.
For every Captain America brave new world you get plenty of movies that pushes the boundary of cgi.
Even for it's time. Pirates of the Caribbean Dead mans chest was the exception not the rule.

This is called nostalgia bias. It's why most film vs digital arguments are redundant and don't hold much weight.
