Her character has some depth, whether purposefully put there or artificially factured by (at least this) viewer.
The fact remains, that especially in fandom spaces, female characters are often seen in very negative light. Especially if they're a canonical love interests of one half of a popular ship (and as a brief glance at the AO3 fandom tag of Breaking Bad reveals, Walter/Jesse is the most used relationship tag).
In these kinds of shows, where I would, perhaps with prejudice, expect the main base of viewers is male, female character's depth is also often downplayed and not put any importance on.
I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with M/M ships, in fact all of my romantic and/or sexual ships are male/male. But there is definitely some introspection to do when it comes to fictional women, not because they should necessarily be included in pairings, but because of some of the takes they inspire people to make are absolutely sexist and misogynist on some level.
I've been binge watching Breaking Bad lately, and I've just begun watching the 5th season.
And it is clear to me that the show is focused on Walter's corruption arc, how he starts full of despair and good intentions after finding out about his illness.
But something that seems to be quite overlooked to me is Skyler's descent. In the beginning, she's happy, full of life. When we reach Season Five, she has gone down a deep hole of guilt and desperation.
I was talking with my father about her, after expressing my opinion that a restraining order against Walt would be the best option for her out loud. He mentioned that he never felt any empathy toward her when he watched the show years ago. I don't share his experience.
In my opinion, understanding her this way requires some similar experiences as Skyler's own, so it isn't clear to a lot of people.
As I see her lying in her bed, not moving, eyes glazed, I remember a part of my own life. Obviously, I haven't been through everything this fictional character has, but empathy and a basic understanding of psychology overcomes this kind of obstacle.
I can feel her loneliness. It's the kind many adults nowadays have, even though I have no personal knowledge of that as a youth. When you don't really have any friends, no one to spend time with, much less to reach out to and trust deeply.
It is very explicitly implied that Walter has sexually assaulted Skyler. He has gone behind her back on several occasions, endangering their family. He's violent, harmful.
It's easy to say as an outsider that someone should just get out of an abusive relationship, but it's absolutely not. Most of us will (thankfully) never have to go through that personally.
Skyler White has seen everyone turn against her. When Walter betrayed his trust and endangered their safety, engaging in criminal and dangerous acts, she left him. For that, she had to see her very own sister, her brother, and child turn against her. They had no way to understand her stand on the matter, but they sure didn't try too much. They thought that she was wrong, had made a mistake. Her own son called her a bitch for her decision she couldn't explain without risking putting his husband in jail.
When Walter broke into the house she was living in, she called the police. They did nothing. He was more believable, more skilled at manipulation. She had nothing to use without enormous risks, so the man got near their infant daughter, lived in their house, and she had no say in it.
So she can't trust her loved ones to support her decisions, the authorities cannot help her, especially after she's committed crimes herself.
In my opinion, the way she has descended to her current state has been made visible well. She's gained some weight, her hair isn't taken care of like it used to be. She doesn't pay much attention to her appearance anymore.
Skyler White feels utterly alone. She quite possibly is.
She has no opportunity to influence anything in her life anymore. She's desperate, the feeling of having no choice is strongly present.

I think I'll actually take a bit of a break from this account. create a new one and only follow peaceful things. I'm doing quite a bit better, but the kind of stressful things I see here and other social medias are holding me back. see you later. or maybe not

Trying to figure out if you’re ace or aro can be so goddamn hard because it’s like, trying to find the absence of something. Imagine you’re at a pond and you want to know if there are any turtles, or fish. Say you find a turtle and you’re like “great! Now I know there are turtles.” Or a fish, now you know for sure there are fish. Or you find both, and now you know for a fact there are both turtles and fish in the pond.
But like, if you don’t find any turtles it might be that there are no turtles or maybe you’re just really shitty at looking for turtles and maybe you THINK you saw a turtle over there or maybe it was just a stick. Maybe there are only a few turtles. Maybe you need to do something special to find the turtles. Maybe a bunch of these rocks are actually turtles but you couldn’t tell them apart. Maybe there are no turtles. You have no idea. Meanwhile some people are saying “Oh there have to be turtles! You’ll find them eventually ;)” or “How many turtles have you found in your pond?” or “Try planting some vegetables at the shore to attract the turtles.” Or “Oh no! What disaster happened to your pond that there are no turtles?” And you’re just standing there wet with an empty net and a tired expression.
But whatever because whether there are turtles or fish or not your pond’s ecology works just fine without them because that’s what eco-communities do they form a system around what they have. You aren’t missing anything if you don’t have turtles you just have a pond system without turtles. If someone tried to change you by pouring a bunch of turtles into your pond it would probably fuck something up.
So you don’t have to be entirely sure. You don’t have to search every inch of the damn pond before you can decide there are probably no turtles. If you want to take the aro or ace label because you think it fits go for it. And if you do find your turtles you can rename the pond. That’s fine.
